Alice's POV
I stood in the hospital hallway trying to process what the woman on Bryan's phone had just said, because Catherine was offering to donate her heart to Antonio which meant she would die.
"That's impossible," Bryan said into the phone. "My mother can't donate her heart, she'd have to be dead first."
"Mr Hale, your mother has stage four cancer," the woman explained. "She's been terminal for six months and she's requesting physician-assisted death so her organs can be donated."
Bryan's face went completely white and he sat down hard in the waiting room chair. I took the phone from his shaking hands.
"This is Alice Hale," I said. "Where is Catherine now?"
"She's at Mercy General in the palliative care unit," the woman said. "Mrs Hale, she's asking to see her son before the procedure."
I hung up and looked at Bryan who was staring at nothing. Victoria had heard everything and was crying again because this meant Antonio might live, but it also meant Catherine would die.
