The innkeeper had not lied when he called it their "best" room. It had a solid door, a window that actually closed, and a small stone hearth.

But as the heavy oak door clicked shut behind them, sealing out the raucous noise of the tavern below, the sheer, undeniable reality of the room's single piece of furniture consumed all the oxygen in the space.

It was a bed. A sturdy, wooden-framed bed with a thick feather mattress and a pile of rough-spun woolen blankets. It was undeniably built for two normal-sized humans.

It was absolutely not built for a mortal woman, the Lord of the Abyss, and the Emperor of Heaven.

Elara stood frozen near the door, clutching her damp cloak around her shoulders. The rain pelted steadily against the glass panes, the chill of the mortal autumn creeping into the drafty room.
