Chapter 13 - Interlude — Seeds Beneath the Surface

The night air felt cooler after leaving the tavern, the sea breeze carrying the faint scent of salt and damp wood through the quiet streets of Mariner's Hearth. Lantern light flickered along the docks as fishermen secured their boats for the night, and somewhere in the distance, waves rolled lazily against the shoreline.

Bren and Lio had split off halfway home, still arguing about who would earn one of the three rifles during training. I let their voices fade behind me and continued alone, my thoughts turning inward.

Once I was certain no one was watching too closely, I activated the system.

First, Marina.

[INSPECT — Marina Faresh]

[Name: Marina Faresh]

[Age: 16]

[Status: Awakened]

[Physique: 9]

[Mana: 8]

[Luck: 5]

[Talent: Keelweaver's Insight]

Type: Structural / Mana Reinforcement

Rank: Iron (High Growth Potential)

Effect:

• Instinctively senses structural stress, weak joints, and load imbalance within 7 meters.

• Can channel mana into materials to temporarily reinforce hulls, masts, ropes, and sails.

• Reinforced structures gain +15% durability for a short duration.

• Reduced mana cost when repairing sea-bound structures.

• Increased efficiency when working on vessels she has previously repaired.

Limitation: Reinforcement remains temporary unless applied during full reconstruction.

Growth Requirements:

1) Reinforce a sea vessel during a life-threatening storm or beast assault and ensure its survival.

2) Successfully construct or overhaul a sea-worthy vessel that completes a full expedition.

I exhaled slowly.

Marina was more than just skilled.

She was foundational.

Her talent was not flashy, nor combat-oriented, but it was the kind that turned fragile ventures into lasting legacies. If nurtured properly, she would not merely repair ships — she would build vessels that endured storms, monsters, and perhaps even war.

An amazing shipwright.

And far more than that.

Then I shifted my focus to Simon.

[INSPECT — Simon Vale]

[Name: Simon Vale]

[Age: 17]

[Status: Awakened]

[Physique: 8]

[Mana: 10]

[Luck: 4]

[Talent: Verdant Pulse]

Type: Restoration / Vitality

Rank: Iron (High Growth Potential)

Effect:

• Channels restorative mana to accelerate wound closure.

• Can stabilize bleeding and minor fractures.

• Reduces poison spread within body temporarily.

• Slightly accelerates natural regeneration when target rests.

Limitations:

• High mana cost for deep wounds.

• Cannot regenerate lost limbs.

• Cannot restore vitality beyond natural limits.

• Requires physical contact for effective healing.

Growth Requirements:

1) Save a life during a critical combat or maritime incident.

2) Sustain healing output for extended duration without collapsing.

I allowed the panel to fade.

Simon was a good seed.

Mana-heavy, low luck, emotionally controlled. His growth requirement demanded crisis, not comfort. If pushed into the right situation, he would evolve quickly. If left idle, he would stagnate.

Marina would shape ships.

Simon would preserve lives.

And me…

I would shape the direction.

The realization settled heavily in my chest.

This voyage was no longer about proving I could leave the island. It was about cultivating the right people, placing them in the right storms, and allowing the sea to temper them properly.

If Marina fulfilled both growth requirements, she would step beyond Iron entirely. If Simon saved a life under real pressure, his Verdant Pulse would deepen into something far more potent.

It seemed I would need to speak with Marina soon — not as a recruiter, not as a boy asking for help, but as someone who understood the scale of what she could become.

The ocean did not merely swallow empires.

It forged them.

And tonight, beneath the quiet stars of Mariner's Hearth, I began to understand that this crew was not accidental.

It was the beginning of something far larger.
