Chapter 14 - The Rule We Break

She avoided him the entire evening.

It wasn't dramatic.

No slammed doors.

No sharp words.

Just distance.

The kind that feels intentional.

Kian noticed.

Of course he did.

She kept her eyes on her books, earphones in (with no music playing), pretending she didn't feel his gaze on her every few minutes.

Finally—

"Are we doing this now?" he asked.

She didn't look up. "Doing what?"

"This." He gestured vaguely between them.

"The silent treatment."

"I'm studying."

"You've read the same page three times."

Her fingers tightened around the pen.

"You're very observant."

"Only when it comes to you."

That did it.

She pulled the earphones out. "Why does it matter?"

His jaw flexed. "Because you've been off since this afternoon."

She laughed softly. "Oh, so now you notice."

"I always notice."

Silence.

Then—

"You seemed happy," she said, trying to keep her voice neutral. "With Lara."

There it was.

He stared at her for a long moment. "That's what this is about?"

"It's not about anything."

"You're jealous."

"I'm not."

"You are."

She stood abruptly. "Stop saying that like you're sure."

He stepped closer. "Because I am."

Her heart was beating too fast. Too loud.

"You don't get to decide how I feel," she said.

"And you don't get to pretend you don't," he shot back.

The air shifted.

Heavy. Charged.

"Why do you care?" she demanded.

His voice dropped. "Why do you?"

The question hit harder than it should have.

Because she didn't have a safe answer anymore.

He moved closer again. Not touching. Just there.

"You didn't like seeing me with her," he said quietly.

Her breath shook. "You don't know that."

"I do."

"Then what?" she whispered. "What does that mean?"

His hand brushed hers—accidental at first.

Neither pulled away.

"It means," he said slowly, "this stopped being just roommates a long time ago."

The words settled between them.

Irreversible.

"This is a mistake," she breathed.

"Maybe," he said.

His fingers curled slightly around hers now.

Not fully holding.

Just enough.

"But I'm tired of pretending it's not real."

Her pulse roared in her ears.

"This breaks the rules," she said weakly.

"Then maybe the rules were wrong."

The distance between them disappeared.

Not a kiss.

Not yet.

Just foreheads almost touching. Shared breath. Shared hesitation.

And then—

A knock on the door.

They sprang apart instantly.

"Amara?" Sade's voice filtered in. "Are you decent?"

Her heart was still racing when she answered. "Yes."

The door opened.

Sade looked between them, suspicious.

"You two look like you just ran a marathon."

"No," Amara said too quickly. "We're fine."

Kian stepped back to his bed, expression unreadable now.

But something had changed.

The line had been crossed—

Even without a kiss.

And as Sade kept talking about hostel gossip, neither of them heard a word.

Because both of them were thinking the same thing:

There was no going back now.
