Chapter 8 - At The End Of The Ruins

Kaelrin and Roan had been through at least five rooms at this point. Kaelrin was deeply exhausted, each movement making her entire body scream for rest. Roan seemed tired as well; he had stopped making the usual snappy comments every other minute.

After finishing fighting the massive group of Red-Fanged Coyotes, Kaelrin slumped against one of the bumpy walls and attempted to slow the rising and falling of her chest.

Looking around, she had just fought with a group of about twelve coyotes, and it wasn't easy. Sure, they were dumb as doornails, but their overwhelming numbers made even these pea-brained idiots difficult to handle though.

But she knew it was worth it. Her stat window said so.

She pulled it up again, excited to see how well she'd done.

[Name: Kaelrin Dawnblade]

[Strength: 11.3]

[Agility: 11]

[Intelligence: 9]

[Stamina: 11.8]

[Weapon: Basic Sword 10/100]

[Armor: None]

She had lost her ring due to its durability, but her stats were much higher, and her weapon mastery was already a tenth of the way complete.

Roan, after finishing his side came towards Kaelrin, holding something silver in his hand.

"Check this out," he said, teasingly. "I finally got an item. And it's pretty good too."

Kaelrin was glad for him and identified the item to see what it was.

[Name: (Low) Ruby Necklace]

[Description: A choker-like necklace that boosts intelligence. Worn out slightly from overuse]

[+0.4 Intelligence]

The necklace was small, with three red gems, Kaelrin assumed those were rubies, all clumped together near the front of the necklace. The rest was silver and cut into two, intertwined chains that were slightly faded.

"Wow, that's great, Roan," Kaelrin told him. Though she was a little jealous, she didn't care much. He had earned it from his own fight, so it would be rude for her to take it.

"I'm giving it to you"

Kaelrin stopped everything, wondering why he would give her such a precious item.

"It's repayment for the ring," he kept going. "Besides, you need to raise your intelligence."

Kaelrin how him on the shoulder for that, but gladly took the necklace, carefully placing it on her neck.

"Alright," Roan said. "You ready to keep going?"

"Sure," Kaelrin said, forcing herself to stand. She was still tired, and her muscles ached and moaned, but she could keep going. She could feel it.

As they both continued towards the next room, they were surprised at what they saw.

Inside the room, there was no other door, instead two chests lay closed at the back of the room, and a group of about twenty Red-Fanged coyotes were between Kaelrin and the chests.

One of them was bigger than the rest. It was laying down asleep, but Kaelrin was sure that if it stood up, it would be taller than Roan.

She quickly used Identify to figure out the beast

[Name: (Mid) Red-Fanged Coyote]

[Strength: 11.3]

[Aligilty: 12.1]

[Intelligence: 10]

[Stamina: 11]

[Skills: Heavy Pounce, Clawed Combo]

Kaelrin trembled once more. She had been nervous everytime she and Roan entered a room, but this time, her legs shook, and her hands were jittering, almost letting go of the greatsword.

"Well, this isn't going to be easy," Roan said, turning to smile at her. "I bet I can take town more of them than you."

Without waiting for her to respond, Roan immediately charged in and started attacking a cluster of coyotes closest to him. Kaelrin, not wanting to fall behind, reluctantly engaged with a group in front of her as well.

Quickly, Kaelrin made one huge slash, cutting open three beasts in front of her. As one leaped toward her, she used the momentum of the sword to swing in an arch above her, activating downslash and cleaving the monster in two. She looked and saw that cracks had formed on the floor as well.

"Look out!" Roan yelled.

Instantly, Kaelrin turned around to see a massive claw swipe at her. She blocked it just in time and she relaxed a little, but then another one came from the side and dug into her arm, rendering it immobile.

The mid tier coyote towered above her, its shadow completely casted over Kaelrin. Each swipe trembling against her sword.

Kaelrin had blocked every claw coming her way, but she didn't have a single opportunity for a counter attack. The beast was just too strong.

Another claw came in and Kaelrin blocked it, but from the other side, she felt a slash in her leg and she dropped to one knee, screaming in pain.

"Amplification," she screamed, trying to trigger the skill, but instead a window appeared in front of her.

[Connot activate Amplification]

[Cooldown: 30 seconds]

"Damn it," she yelled, and anger seeped through her. She was tired of fighting these beasts all day. Tired of letting so many monsters trample over her like she was an ant.

"AAAAHHHH," she screamed and a wave of strength washed over her.

She saw a claw swipe at her and instead of blocking, she immediately slashed at it, cutting the coyote's paw in two. The beast screamed, and with that moment of opportunity,
