Chapter 46 - The courage to rise

All five Eclipse Units stared at Raithasu's motionless body.

For a few seconds, no one spoke. The cave was filled with the sound of falling debris and the distant rumble of Darev's uncontrolled attacks. Dust drifted through the air, settling over the shattered treasure and broken stone pillars.

Then Nyx turned toward Kairon, a grin spreading across his face.

"Yo, bro! You actually did it!" he exclaimed, pointing at Raithasu. "Look at him! The guy who was giving all five of us a hard time is finally down!"

Kairon stood with one foot resting on a broken stone, trying to hide the pain from his earlier injuries.

"Hah. I told you he wasn't invincible."

But before anyone could celebrate, a furious voice thundered through the cave.

"YOU'RE ALL MY ENEMIES!"

Everyone turned.

Darev stood among the ruins, his body trembling violently. Flames flickered around his mouth, and his eyes burned with a terrifying, unstable light.

"I'LL KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU!"

Nyx's smile vanished.

"Oh, great. He's completely lost it."

Darev took a step toward them.

"I SAID I'LL KILL YOU ALL!"

Nyx backed away, raising both hands.

"Whoa, whoa! Easy, big guy! We're your teammates, remember?"

"Teammates?" Darev snarled. "LIARS! YOU'RE ALL TRYING TO DESTROY ME!"

Nyx glanced at the others, then leaned toward Kairon.

"Yeah, this is bad. We've got a serious problem."

Sera's expression hardened. "We need to stop him before he destroys the entire cave."

Nyx looked at her as if she'd said something ridiculous.

"Stop him? Sera, look at him! He's throwing a tantrum with enough firepower to level a mountain!"

"Then what do you suggest?" Sera snapped.

Nyx's face grew serious.

"We take him down."

Sera stared at him. "He's one of us."

"And he's trying to kill us!" Nyx shot back. "Would you rather wait until he burns us alive? If we don't stop him now, none of us will make it out of here!"

Kairon, who was still standing on Darev's damaged foot, nodded.

"He's right. Even if we somehow survive this, Darev won't return to normal anytime soon. We can't afford to hesitate."

He looked down at Darev.

"Sorry, buddy. Nothing personal."

Darev's head snapped toward him.

"YOU!"

Before Kairon could react, Darev opened his mouth.

A violent glow erupted deep inside his throat.

Sera's eyes widened.

"EVERYONE, MOVE!"

BOOOOOOM!

A massive blast of fire exploded from Darev's mouth.

The shock wave tore through the cave, sending rocks and broken pillars flying in every direction. The surrounding walls crumbled beneath the force, and the cave's boundaries seemed to expand as entire sections of stone were blown apart.

Nyx was directly in the blast's path

"OH, HELL NO!"

He threw himself sideways at the last possible second.

KRAAASH!

The explosion swept past him, scorching the ground where he had stood moments earlier. He hit the floor, rolled across the rubble, and barely managed to regain his balance.

"That lunatic nearly turned me into a puddle!

Before Darev could unleash another blast, Auren raised both hands

Metallic chains erupted from his mechanical fingers, twisting through the air like living serpents.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

The chains wrapped around Darev's arms and torso, pulling tight.

Auren planted his feet against the ground and strained to hold him.

"Darev! Calm down!"

Darev roared and pulled against the restraints.

The chains groaned under the pressure.

"LET ME GO!"

Auren's mechanical hands sparked.

"I'm trying to keep you from destroying everything!"

Kairon suddenly appeared beside Darev.

FLASH!

He drove a powerful punch into Darev's ribs.

THUD!

Darev barely moved.

Kairon's expression changed.

"What the hell? He's even tougher than before!"

Darev twisted his head toward him.

"You little insect!"

He jerked his body violently, forcing Auren to struggle against the chains.

Nyx seized the opportunity.

His body liquefied, spreading across the ground before surging upward around Darev's legs.

"Let's see how you like this!"

The liquid mass climbed over Darev's body, covering his limbs and tightening around his torso. Nyx concentrated, attempting to soften and melt the outer layer of Darev's body.

SSSSSS!

Steam rose where Nyx's liquid form pressed against Darev's scorching skin.

Darev howled.

"GET OFF ME!"

"Not until you stop trying to barbecue us!" Nyx shouted.

Auren pulled the chains tighter while Kairon continued striking Darev from the side.

BAM! CRACK! THUD!

For a brief moment, the three of them seemed to be gaining control.

Sera remained a short distance away, watching the fight with narrowed eyes.

Then something caught her attention.

Her gaze shifted toward Raithasu.

The injured fighter was still lying among the ruins, his body almost completely motionless.

Yet something about him had changed.

Sera's eyes widened.

"No..."

She took a step closer.

Raithasu's power level was rising.

Not slowly.

It was climbing at an alarming rate.

"What is happening to him?" she whispered.

She stared at his broken body, remembering the damage he had suffered only moments earlier.

His bones had been shattered. His vision had been destroyed by her poison. His body had endured attack after attack from all five Eclipse Units.

He should have been unable to move.

Yet the energy inside him continued to grow.

And beneath his torn clothing, his injuries were beginning to recover.

Sera's breathing became shallow.

"His bones... they're healing?"

She glanced back at her teammates.

Auren was still struggling to restrain Darev. Kairon was attacking recklessly, and Nyx was using nearly all his strength to keep Darev's body under control.

None of them had noticed what was happening behind them.

Sera slowly stepped backward.

These idiots are too busy fighting each other to realize what's happening.

Her gaze returned to Raithasu.

First, Darev loses control. Now this monster is recovering from injuries that should have killed him.

Her fingers curled into fists.

If Raithasu wakes up while we're weakened, he'll finish us all.

She looked at her teammates one last time.

And if Darev keeps going like this, he'll kill us himself.

A cold realization settled over her.

I need to leave. Now.

Without making a sound, Sera turned and disappeared into the darkness between the broken pillars.

She didn't look back.

For the first time since the Eclipse Units had entered the cave, Sera had decided that surviving mattered more than completing their mission.

Meanwhile, Raithasu remained unconscious.

But his mind had traveled somewhere far away.

Somewhere he hadn't visited in years.

Somewhere buried beneath pain, blood, and memories he had tried to forget.

Twelve years earlier.

A twelve-year-old boy sat alone in the back hallway of a large wooden house.

Moonlight spilled through the open windows, illuminating the polished floorboards and the wooden pillars that supported the old building. Outside, the night was quiet. A gentle breeze moved through the trees, carrying the faint rustling of leaves into the hallway.

The boy sat with his knees drawn close to his chest.

His name was Raithasu.

He stared at the moon without blinking, his expression heavy with disappointment.

Footsteps approached from behind him.

A young man, perhaps twenty-two or twenty-four years old, entered the hallway. He wore simple training clothes, and his movements carried the quiet confidence of someone accustomed to hardship.

His name was Asta.

He was Raithasu's master.

Asta stopped beside the boy and studied him for a moment before sitting down.

"What's wrong, Raithasu?"

The boy didn't answer immediately.

He kept staring at the moon.

Finally, he spoke.

"I don't understand."

Asta tilted his head. "What don't you understand?"

Raithasu lowered his gaze.

"How did I lose today?"

His voice trembled with frustration.

"I trained so hard. I practiced every day. I kept pushing myself even when my body hurt. I thought I could beat him."

He clenched his fists.

"But I still lost."

For a moment, Asta said nothing.

Raithasu continued, his words coming faster now.

"I had more power than him, Master. I knew I was stronger. I could have won!"

His voice broke.

"So why did I lose?"

Asta watched him quietly.

Then he spoke in a calm, almost casual tone.

"So what?"

Raithasu turned toward him.

"What do you mean, 'so what'?"

Asta shrugged.

"You'll fight him again next week. Train harder, learn from your mistakes, and try again."

Raithasu's face tightened.

"That's easy for you to say!"

Asta raised an eyebrow.

"Is it?"

"You don't understand!" Raithasu snapped. "You have no idea how humiliating it was!"

His eyes grew wet, but he refused to let the tears fall.

"I stood there in front of everyone. I knew I could beat him, but I still lost. Do you know how that feels?"

Asta studied him for several seconds.

Then, unexpectedly, he smiled faintly.

"Ah. So you're embarrassed."

Raithasu looked away.

"Yes."

"And you think losing is a disgrace?"

Raithasu nodded.

Asta leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

"Then answer me something."

The boy glanced at him.

"Why didn't you remember all this embarrassment while you were losing?"

Raithasu froze.

Asta continued.

"When you were fighting, when your opponent hit you in the stomach, when you felt the pain spreading through your body... where was your courage then?"

Raithasu opened his mouth, but no answer came.

Asta's expression became serious.

"You had more power than him, didn't you?"

"Yes."

"You had trained harder than him?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you surrender?"

Raithasu's fingers tightened around the fabric of his trousers.

"I... I couldn't keep going."

Asta nodded slowly.

"Exactly."

He turned toward the moonlit courtyard.

"Listen carefully, Raithasu. Courage isn't something you prove when you're winning. Anyone can feel confident when everything is going their way."

He looked directly into the boy's eyes.

"Real courage is what remains when you're hurt, exhausted, frightened, and convinced that you have nothing left."

Raithasu stared at him.

Asta's voice grew firmer.

"When you have the courage to fight, you stop measuring everything by pain, defeat, or even death. You face your enemy until your last breath."

He paused.

"Even when you have no strength left, you stand up. Even when your body begs you to stop, you keep moving. Because sometimes, the strength you need doesn't appear until the moment you refuse to give up."

Raithasu swallowed.

"But I had the courage to fight..."

"No," Asta interrupted. "You had the courage to enter the fight. But you didn't have the courage to see it through."

The words struck harder than any punch.

Raithasu lowered his head.

Asta let the silence settle between them before continuing.

"You want to become a leader someday, don't you?"

Raithasu nodded slowly.

"Then understand this. A leader doesn't just dream of standing at the top. A leader must have the courage to endure what it takes to get there."

He placed a hand on Raithasu's shoulder.

"You cannot run from fear and expect it to disappear. You have to face it. Again and again, until it no longer controls you."

Raithasu looked down at his hands.

For the first time that night, the humiliation in his chest began to change into something else.

Determination.

Asta stood up.

"Tomorrow, you'll fight him again."

Raithasu looked up sharply.

"What?"

"You heard me. You'll have another match."

Asta folded his arms.

"And if you lose again, you'll keep training until you can win."

Raithasu hesitated.

Asta's expression turned stern.

"But if you still haven't learned how to stand up after a defeat, then perhaps fighting isn't the path for you."

Raithasu's eyes widened.

Asta continued without softening his words.

"Give up on your dream of becoming a leader. Forget all those ambitions you've been carrying around. Find another path, because a person who abandons his own resolve the moment things become painful has no business leading anyone."

The hallway fell silent.

Raithasu slowly rose to his feet.

His hands trembled, but his eyes were no longer lowered.

"If I can't win tomorrow..."

He swallowed.

"Then I'll spend the rest of my life serving the people who are stronger than me."

Asta looked at him.

Raithasu clenched his fists.

"But I won't give up without trying again."

Asta's stern expression softened slightly.

"Good."

He turned toward the stairs.

"Now go to sleep. Your match is tomorrow morning."

Raithasu remained where he was for a moment, staring at the moon.

Then he turned and followed his master inside.

For the first time that night, he wasn't thinking about how humiliating his defeat had been.

He was thinking about what he would do differently the next day.

The following morning.

The training ground was crowded.

Students and spectators stood around the fighting arena, their voices rising as the two competitors entered.

Raithasu stepped onto the dirt-covered ground.

Across from him stood his opponent, Madan.

The older boy rolled his shoulders and gave Raithasu a confident smile.

"Back for more?"

Raithasu said nothing.

He lowered his stance, fixed his eyes on Madan, and charged.

"HYAAAH!"

His feet tore through the dirt as he rushed forward with all the determination he could summon.

For an instant, it seemed as though he might land the first blow.

But Madan was ready.

THUD!

A powerful punch struck Raithasu directly in the stomach.

The boy's eyes widened.

All the air rushed out of his lungs.

"Urgh!"

He stumbled backward, clutching his abdomen. Pain spread through his body, and his legs nearly gave way beneath him.

The spectators murmured.

Madan advanced.

"Is that all you've got?"

Raithasu forced himself upright

His stomach burned. His breathing was ragged. Every instinct screamed at him to step back.

But he remembered Asta's words.

Real courage is what remains when you're hurt, exhausted, frightened, and convinced that you have nothing left.

Raithasu gritted his teeth and charged again.

This time, Madan sidestepped him.

Before Raithasu could turn around, Madan scooped up a handful of dirt.

Raithasu barely had time to react.

FWISH!

The dirt struck him directly in the eyes.

"Ah!"

Raithasu staggered, raising both hands to his face.

His eyes burned violently. He tried to blink away the dirt, but every movement only made the irritation worse.

Madan didn't wait.

BAM!

A punch struck Raithasu across the face.

THUD!

Another blow slammed into his ribs.

CRACK!

A third strike sent him crashing onto the ground.

Raithasu tried to rise, but Madan kicked him back into the dirt.

The world spun around him.

He could barely see. His body screamed with pain, and the sounds of the spectators seemed to fade into the distance.

Madan stood over him.

"Get up," he said mockingly. "Come on. You wanted to fight, didn't you?"

Raithasu pressed one hand against the ground.

His arm shook.

He tried to push himself up.

But his strength was failing.

His elbow buckled, and he fell back onto the dirt.

Then, through the ringing in his ears, a voice echoed inside his mind.

You had the courage to enter the fight... but not the courage to see it through.

Raithasu's fingers dug into the soil.

Another voice followed.

When you have the courage to fight, you stop measuring everything by pain, defeat, or even death.

His breathing grew heavier.

Even when you have no strength left, you stand up.

Madan raised his voice.

"Stay down! You've already lost!"

But Raithasu barely heard him.

Asta's voice was louder now, filling his mind as though his master were standing right beside him.

Get up, Raithasu

Raithasu's hand trembled.

Get up.

His fingers curled into a fist.

GET UP, RAITHASU!

Something inside him snapped.

Not his resolve.

The invisible limit that had kept him down.

Raithasu's eyes flew open.

BOOOOOOM!

A violent burst of energy erupted from his body.

The dirt beneath him exploded outward, and a powerful shock wave swept across the training ground. Spectators stumbled backward as dust and loose stones flew through the air.

Madan recoiled, throwing an arm over his face.

"What the hell?!"

Raithasu rose slowly from the ground.

His body was still injured. His breathing was still uneven.

But the energy surrounding him had changed.

Flames began to emerge from his skin, spiraling around his arms and shoulders. They surged higher with every passing second, illuminating the training ground with a fierce, blazing light.

FWOOSHHH!

The flames twisted around him like a living force.

Raithasu stared straight ahead.

For the first time, he didn't look at Madan as someone he needed to defeat to escape humiliation.

He looked at him as an opponent he had chosen to face until the very end.

And then, the memory began to dissolve.

The wooden hallway vanished. The moonlight disappeared. The voice of his master faded into the darkness.

But the words remained.

Get up, Raithasu.

Get up!

GET UP!

PRESENT DAY

Deep inside the ruined cave, Raithasu's fingers suddenly twitched.

The Eclipse Units turned toward him.

A violent surge of energy burst from his body.

BOOOOOOM!

The ground beneath him cracked. Dust shot into the air, and the nearby rubble was thrown backward by the force of the explosion.

Kairon staggered.

"What the hell is that?!"

Nyx's expression drained of color.

"His power... it's rising again!"

Raithasu's eyes slowly opened.

But they were no longer the same.

The flames surrounding him surged upward, wrapping around his body in spiraling waves of energy. The injuries that had nearly ended his life were beginning to heal, while the broken bones beneath his skin recovered with unnatural speed.

CRACK. CRACK. CrACK.

His body straightened.

The air around him trembled.

Sera was already gone, fleeing into the darkness, unaware of what was happening behind her.

Auren raised his mechanical hands, preparing to defend himself.

Darev continued roaring, his unstable fire blazing across the ruined cave.

And Raithasu stood among the shattered stones, his eyes burning through the flames.

Asta's final words echoed inside his mind.

You wanted to become a leader. Then have the courage to stand up.

Raithasu slowly clenched his fists.

The flames around his arms intensified.

He took one step forward.

BOOM!

The ground cracked beneath his foot.

His gaze settled on the remaining Eclipse Units.

He had fallen.

He had broken.

He had come closer to death than ever before.

But he had not surrendered.

And now, the fight was far from over.
