Chapter 49 - His past.

Hyrin lay there on the moss, staring up at the canopy, his expression unreadable. The question hung between them, heavy and waiting.

Before he could answer, Wish's stomach growled loudly, breaking the tension like a stone dropped into still water.

Hyrin's lips twitched. He sat up in one fluid motion. "I'm going to look for food."

"Wait, you haven't answered—" Wish started, but he was already on his feet, moving away with that silent, predatory grace.

He walked only a few steps before stopping, his head tilting back toward the canopy. His eyes tracked something in the darkness above.

Wish followed his gaze and caught faint silhouettes of birds roosting in the branches. Their dark feathers blended almost perfectly with the shadows, but their eyes reflected the faint glow of the luminescent mushrooms.

Hyrin raised his hand. Wind magic swirled around his fingers, the air shifting from a gentle current to something sharp and focused.
