Chapter 53 - Chapter 53

The Battle of New York — Movie Accurate Version

Tony's boots slammed onto the landing pad of Stark Tower, but he was already too late.

The sky was splitting open.

Blue energy rippled outward as the Tesseract's portal burst open, swirling like a star being born in the heart of Manhattan. Lightning-like arcs tore through the air, and the first distant roar of the Chitauri rumbled through the clouds.

Tony's heart dropped. "…Damn it. I'm late."

Selvig & the Portal

Dr. Selvig stood at the base of the device, eyes dull with Loki's mind control.

"Selvig! Shut it down! NOW!"

Selvig didn't even blink.

Tony cursed and fired a low-powered beam. Selvig flew back, unconscious.

The portal continued to widen.

And Loki stood on the balcony, scepter in hand, smirking.

Tony vs Loki — The Conversation

"I hope you're ready for round two," Tony said, walking forward.

Loki's smirk widened. "You presume to challenge me again?"

"I mean…" Tony shrugged, "you opened a portal over New York. Rude. Also—Jarvis, give me Mark VII."

Jarvis' voice chimed calmly in his ear:

"Sir, the Mark 7 is not ready."

"Deploy it anyway."

"Very well, sir."

Tony turned back to Loki. "You know, since we're waiting… let's talk about my friend's brother. Roy."

Loki's brow twitched.

Tony continued, "Yeah, the kid you call your pride. You know he was trying to convince you—"

Loki instantly grabbed Tony by the throat, fury blazing in his eyes.

"Do NOT speak of him!"

He threw Tony through the window.

The Fall and the Suit

Tony plummeted—glass, wind, chaos screaming in his ears.

"JARVIS!!!"

"Mark 7 inbound."

A red pod shot from the tower, unfolding midair.

Magnetic clamps locked. Armor plates snapped into place.

FOOM.

Iron Man soared upward.

The Avengers Assemble

The first wave of Chitauri poured through the portal, gliding down on bio-mech chariots. Tony fired blast after blast, weaving between skyscrapers.

Down below:

Steve Rogers deflected energy bolts with his shield, barking orders. Natasha rolled beneath blasts, firing precise shots. Barton stood atop a building, arrows striking enemies midair. Thor unleashed storms, lightning carving through whole platoons. And Banner arrived—only to leap from a bike and transform midair, turning into—

HULK.

He smashed into a Leviathan like a meteor.

The defenders worked together. For the first time… they were a team.

The Nuclear Missile

Far away, behind screens and microphones, the World Security Council gave an order.

A missile launched.

Fury protested, screaming into the comms—but it was too late.

"Tony," Fury growled, "a nuclear missile is headed toward Manhattan."

Tony looked up.

"…Of course it is."

He intercepted the missile, forcing the thrusters upward.

"JARVIS, I'm taking this thing to the portal."

"Sir, once you go through—"

"I know."

He pushed harder.

The Sacrifice

Tony rocketed straight through enemy lines, heading for the swirling blue heart of the portal.

"Roy would yell at me for this," Tony muttered. "Good thing he's not here."

He shot into space.

The Chitauri mother ship loomed above.

Tony released the missile. It struck the ship's core—

BOOOOOOM.

A blinding shockwave spread through space.

One by one, every Chitauri soldier on Earth went limp and fell.

Tony drifted, suit power dying.

"Jarvis…? You still with me?"

Nothing.

He fell back through the closing portal—

—and dropped like a stone toward the city.

Hulk's Catch

The ground rushed up.

Hulk leaped, snatching Tony from the air just before impact.

Tony's helmet hissed open.

He wasn't breathing.

Hulk roared in his face.

Tony jerked awake with a gasp. "Ugh—did anybody kiss me?"

Steve sighed with relief. "We were about to."

Tony groaned. "I'd rather die."

The Avengers Stand Victorious

As smoke cleared and the last Leviathan corpse crashed onto 42nd Street…

New York was battered.

The sky was closing.

And the Avengers had won.

For the first time, they stood together as a true team.
