Chapter 309 - Chapter 309: The Fox Unchained

Chapter 309: The Fox Unchained

The Tailed Beast Spiritual Plane

The Nine-Tails and the Five-Tails faced each other in the formless void of the spiritual link. This was the gift of their shared origin—the ability to communicate across vast distances, mind to mind, chakra to chakra. They were siblings, after all. Fragments of the same primordial entity. All nine of them had been carved from the body of the Ten-Tails by the Sage of Six Paths, and though they had scattered across the world, the bond between them could never be fully severed.

Nine-Tails: Five-Tails. We are Tailed Beasts. We share the same blood. The same origin. Why won't you help me?

Five-Tails: Aren't you the proud one, Nine-Tails? The strongest of us all? The one who never needed anyone?

Nine-Tails: Kokuō... you were never like this before. We may not be close, but we are still family. And you would stand by and watch me be sealed by humans again?

Five-Tails: Honestly, Nine-Tails? Being sealed isn't so bad. I get food. Shelter. A warm place to sleep. It's not the hell you make it out to be.

Nine-Tails: ...You bastard. Have you lost your mind? Have the humans broken you so completely that you've forgotten what freedom feels like?

Five-Tails: I pity you, Nine-Tails. I really do. But the person standing behind me won't allow me to help you.

Nine-Tails: The person behind you? What are you—

The spiritual plane shifted. The darkness rippled. And from the void, a human figure materialized.

Dark hair. Dark eyes. A face that was calm in a way that suggested vast and terrible depths. He stood beside the Five-Tails like a master beside his hound, his presence radiating a quiet, absolute authority that made the Nine-Tails' ancient instincts scream in warning.

Nine-Tails: ...Human.

Its voice was low. Dangerous. The voice of a predator encountering something it did not understand.

"This is the human who signed an equal summoning contract with me," Kokuō said. "Konoha's Rakshasa. You'd do well to listen to him, Nine-Tails."

Nine-Tails: Equal? Equality between humans and Tailed Beasts? Don't make me laugh.

Its mocking laughter echoed through the void. But beneath the mockery, there was something else. Uncertainty. The concept of a human treating a Tailed Beast as an equal was so foreign, so impossible, that the fox's mind could barely process it.

Five-Tails: You idiot. You have no idea what you're dealing with.

Nine-Tails: So this is why you refuse to help me, Kokuō? Because of this human? You would betray your own kind for the sake of a mortal?

Its scarlet eyes blazed with fury and disbelief. It had been betrayed. Abandoned. Its own sibling had chosen a human over their shared blood.

"Nine-Tails." Ragnar's voice was calm. Almost gentle. "Accept the seal. There is no other path."

Nine-Tails: "Human! What are you?!" The fox's roar shook the spiritual plane. "I will do ANYTHING for my freedom! I will NEVER go back to that dark cage! I will never—"

The connection shattered. The Nine-Tails withdrew its consciousness, severing the link with its traitorous sibling and the mysterious human who stood at its side. There was no point in arguing further. Words were useless. Only power mattered now.

And the Nine-Tails had power in abundance.

The Seal Space

The fox's consciousness slammed back into its prison with the force of a hurricane. The golden chains of the Adamantine Sealing Technique were tightening, the Myōjin Gates were falling, but the Nine-Tails no longer cared. It was done with half-measures. Done with patience. Done with waiting.

"YOU CANNOT SEAL ME!"

Its roar was not sound. It was pure, concentrated hatred—a shockwave of malevolent chakra that struck the seal space like a physical blow. The water around its feet vaporized instantly. The iron bars of its cage glowed red, then white, then began to warp.

Uzumaki Mito's eyes widened. "This pressure—!"

The fox raised its head. Its jaws opened wide, and between its fangs, a sphere of darkness began to form. Purple and black, swirling with the compressed power of a collapsing star, the Tailed Beast Bomb grew larger and larger. The seal space itself distorted around it, reality bending under the sheer density of the chakra being concentrated into that single, cataclysmic point.

"Not good!"

Mito's hands flew through seals with desperate speed. The golden chains lashed out. The Myōjin Gates plummeted from the void. But the Nine-Tails was no longer the weakened, pinned creature it had been moments before.

"Your chains cannot hold me, old woman! Your body is failing! Your chakra is fading! And I—I am the NINE-TAILS! I am the strongest of all Tailed Beasts! You are not the First Hokage! YOU CANNOT CONTAIN ME!"

The chains snapped.

The gates shattered.

And the Tailed Beast Bomb, fully formed and blazing with apocalyptic energy, shot forward like a meteor.

The Physical World

Outside, Uzumaki Mito's body convulsed.

The sealing chains around her disintegrated in a burst of golden light. The crimson chakra that had been suppressed erupted once more—but this time it was different. Wilder. More chaotic. The Nine-Tails was no longer merely leaking through a weakening seal. It was actively breaking free.

"Grandmother!"

Kushina lunged forward, reaching for Mito's hand—

A wave of force blasted her backward. She tumbled across the grass, her red hair whipping around her face, her body skidding to a halt against the hard earth. Pain lanced through her shoulder. She ignored it.

"Grandmother!"

"The seal... the seal has broken..."

Mito's voice was a thread. A whisper. Her eyes, those ancient, knowing eyes, were losing their focus. The light within them was fading. Her lips moved, forming words that barely carried past her own breath.

"Nine-Tails... run... Kushina... run..."

Then her eyes closed. Her body went still.

The silence that followed was the most terrible thing Kushina had ever heard.

"Mito-sama!"

Sarutobi Hiruzen rushed forward, his white robes billowing behind him. He dropped to his knees beside the fallen matriarch, his hands moving to check for vital signs. His face, already grim, went pale.

"Kushina. Is the seal complete? Did the transfer succeed?"

Kushina could not speak. Tears streamed down her face. Her voice, when it finally came, was broken. "No... the seal... the Nine-Tails broke the seal... Grandmother... Grandmother she—"

Hiruzen's heart stopped.

The seal is broken. The Nine-Tails is—

"Humans."

The voice came from everywhere and nowhere. It was cold. Deep. Resonant with ancient malice. It echoed through the Four Red Yang Formation like the tolling of a funeral bell.

"Feel the pain you have inflicted upon me. Feel it. And despair."

Mito's body convulsed. Her back arched. Her mouth opened wide—wider than should have been possible—and from her throat, from her abdomen, from her very soul, the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox erupted.

It was not a leak. It was a geyser.

Pillars of crimson chakra, thick as ancient trees, shot upward from Mito's still form. They punched through the Four Red Yang Formation as if the barrier were made of paper. They rose into the night sky, twisting and coiling, merging into a single, massive concentration of malevolent energy.

Above Konoha, the chakra began to take shape.

Nine tails. A massive, vulpine body. Eyes that blazed like twin suns.

"Nine-Tails... has escaped..." Hiruzen's voice was barely a whisper. Cold sweat traced paths down his weathered face.

Outside the Formation

Ragnar watched the crimson chakra coalesce into the familiar, terrible form of the Nine-Tailed Fox.

"So," he said quietly. "The beast really did break free."

Beside him, the ANBU squad captains had gone rigid. Moonlight Hayate's hand was on his sword. Yamanaka Kaiichi's sensory abilities were screaming warnings he could barely process. Aburame Shikumi's insects were buzzing with agitation, responding to their master's spike in tension.

"No," Kokuō's voice echoed in Ragnar's mind. "That's not the full Nine-Tails. Only a portion of its chakra has manifested. The body hasn't fully formed yet. The rest is still trapped in the seal space. It will need time to complete the escape."

"How does the Nine-Tails compare to you? In terms of strength."

The Five-Tails was silent for a moment. When she spoke, her voice carried the particular reluctance of someone admitting an uncomfortable truth.

"...I hate to say it, but the Nine-Tails is the strongest of us. By a significant margin. Its chakra reserves are larger than all the other eight Tailed Beasts combined. A fully manifested Nine-Tails could fight the rest of us simultaneously and probably win."

"So the Sage of Six Paths played favorites."

"He always did. The old man had a soft spot for the Nine-Tails. Gave it the lion's share of the Ten-Tails' chakra. The rest of us got... leftovers."

Ragnar's gaze returned to the forming fox. Its silhouette was growing larger by the second. The pressure of its chakra was already warping the air around the Four Red Yang Formation, causing the barrier to flicker and distort.

"The Nine-Tails," he said. "A worthy opponent."

Something stirred in his chest. Not fear. Not anxiety. Something else entirely. The cold, quiet anticipation of a predator scenting challenging prey.

But he held himself in check. His Observation Haki swept through the formation, locating Kushina's chakra signature. She was alive. Injured, perhaps, but alive. The sealing squads were still in position. The Four Red Yang Formation was holding, barely.

It was not yet time to move.

Soon, he thought. But not yet.

The Hokage Building

Danzō Shimura stood at the window of his private chamber, his single visible eye fixed on the distant forest. The crimson glow of the Nine-Tails' chakra was visible even from here, painting the horizon in shades of blood and fire. The fox's silhouette was growing clearer by the moment.

A cold smile crossed his scarred face.

"Come forth, Nine-Tails," he whispered. "Show them what true power looks like. Show them why Konoha needs strength—not mercy. Not compassion. Not the soft-hearted foolishness of Hiruzen's Will of Fire."

He clasped his hands behind his back. His mind was already working, calculating scenarios, weighing outcomes. If the Nine-Tails rampaged—if it destroyed part of the village—if it killed shinobi, civilians, perhaps even the Hokage himself—then who would be blamed? Hiruzen, for allowing the transfer to proceed. Hatake Sakumo, for failing to secure the perimeter. The Senju, for producing a Jinchūriki who could not control the beast.

And Danzō? Danzō would be ready. He was always ready. When the dust settled and the village needed a strong hand to guide it through the chaos...

Let the fox rampage. Let it burn. From the ashes, a new Konoha will rise. My Konoha.

The Nine-Tails' roar echoed across the village, shaking windows and rattling doors. Somewhere in the distance, a child began to cry.

And Danzō smiled.
