Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Devil By The Well

Viper School armor primarily consists of light armor, made mostly from various monster hides, with metal plating only on critical areas. It is generally lightweight and offers limited defense.

This is a special school that split off from the Bear School with the goal of hunting the Wild Hunt. Its most familiar member to players is the bald, burly man as strong as a bear, Letho.

A true man willing to risk his life for his companions.

Because Viper School witchers mostly hunt monsters, metal armor is not much sturdier than ordinary leather armor against those powerful, massive creatures. In fact, its weight and structure can hinder a witcher's agility.

Therefore, the Viper School does not prioritize defensive gear, designing it solely for maximum explosive power.

After obtaining the blueprint, Guilliman was not in a hurry to forge it. In all of White Orchard, the only one capable of crafting this armor was likely Willis the dwarven blacksmith.

However, once he found an opportunity to eliminate the lord of White Orchard, this matter could very likely become a clue exposing his identity.

Before his own strength was sufficient, he did not want his crime of murdering a noble to be made public.

In this era, this was a charge that made all noble rulers extremely wary. If he bore such a charge, he would probably be publicly wanted in many cities, severely impacting his future life.

Time quickly arrived at the third day.

That day, he bid farewell to the young widow Judith, preparing to lie in wait near the lord's manor, looking for an opportunity to assassinate him.

Although Lady Judith's expression showed some reluctance, she did not try to make him stay.

Their relationship was, in the end, merely a fleeting romance, a mutual desire for each other's bodies, without any substantial affection.

And Guilliman only regarded her as a tool in the process of soul sublimation.

However, he wondered if his luck had turned.

That afternoon, while Guilliman was enjoying a lunch of roasted beef and bread at the White Orchard inn, he suddenly overheard two farmers at an adjacent table discussing something.

The red-bearded farmer said mysteriously:

"Hey! Have you heard?"

"Just today, Claire and Volker from Honver village are getting married."

His companion, a bald middle-aged farmer, looked a bit confused.

"So what? It's normal for men to like sleeping with women and marrying them, isn't it?"

The red-bearded farmer grinned, saying with a somewhat schadenfreude tone:

"You forgot, a few years ago, Claire and Volker openly defied the lord's rule, then led a group of people to establish Honver Village in a remote area."

"They made the lord look like a fool. At the time, because the commotion was quite significant, the lord didn't make things difficult for them."

"Now that the fuss has died down, and our lord is going crazy because of his son's matter, do you think the lord will agree to these two getting married?"

"Hehe, I heard inside information."

"Tonight, the lord is going to take people to trouble them. Their wedding today probably won't happen."

Originally, the red-bearded farmer wanted to show off his well-informed status to his companion, but after the bald farmer finished listening, he stood up, slapped the red-bearded farmer, and angrily said:

"Whose side are you on, you noble's dog?"

"I hate people like you who gloat the most."

Subsequently, the two drunken farmers started wrestling with clumsy techniques, drawing cheers from the surrounding patrons.

However, at this moment, Guilliman's thoughts were no longer on this.

Hearing the two farmers' conversation, as an experienced player, he immediately realized this was an opportunity, an opportunity to assassinate the lord.

He was also very familiar with Claire and Volker, whom the farmers mentioned.

The first monster-hunting quest in the game, [The Devil By The Well], was about this very incident.

On the night of Claire and Volker's wedding, the lord of White Orchard brought people to their village and deliberately picked a fight.

Under the pretext of exercising the right of the first night, he tried to forcibly take Claire away.

The laughable thing was that the right of the first night, a barbaric custom of noble rule, had been abolished many years ago.

The ultimate outcome of this matter was that all the villagers of Honver Village were massacred by the lord's men. Claire, after being defiled, was hanged in the well, and finally transformed into a Noonwraith, attacking any villager who approached Honver Village.

Thinking of this, Guilliman narrowed his eyes, feeling a bit pleased.

Speaking of which, this lord of White Orchard truly committed heinous acts; he was practically an animal. His hanging by the Nilfgaardians a few years later was well-deserved.

However, this time, it wouldn't be the Nilfgaardians' turn to act.

Since the bastard lord was going to bring people to cause trouble in Honver Village tonight, then under the cover of night, eliminating these guys would be perfect. He could then head straight to Vizima, settling a matter on his mind.

Deciding to act, he quickly finished the roasted beef in front of him, Guilliman paid the bill, then left the peaceful and quiet White Orchard village.

This departure, he estimated, meant he wouldn't return here for a long time.

He only hoped that when he returned next time, White Orchard would still be as beautiful and serene... Nighttime.

Ignatius Verres, the lord of White Orchard, rode at the front, accompanied by six fully armed soldiers.

Their group carried torches, their expressions calm, their eyes cold, as they advanced towards the brightly lit Honver Village in the distance.

The lord of White Orchard, leading the way, stared from afar at the village that seemed to radiate festive light, his eyes burning, teeth clenched, harboring immense anger in his heart.

Damn commoners.

The Verres family had become extinct, yet these commoners who had once opposed him were living happy lives.

How could such a stark contrast not make this high-and-mighty lord feel shame and anger?

Ignatius had decided that this time, he would thoroughly humiliate those commoners, hang a few who didn't know their place, and make them understand that the dignity of nobles was sacred and inviolable.

They were getting married tonight, weren't they?

The generous Lord Ignatius decided that he himself would be the first groom, and his soldiers would also join in.

He would let that commoner woman who dared to oppose him taste what noble blood was, what generosity and kindness were.

Just as Ignatius was thinking this, he suddenly noticed that a thick tree trunk had been cut down at some point and lay across the muddy country road, blocking their path.

If someone with enough experience saw this, they would likely immediately become alert, realizing that something was amiss ahead.

However, this noble lord had never experienced a proper battle, nor had he been on a battlefield.

He waved his hand, signaling his soldiers and himself to stop, preparing to investigate the situation.

In the heart of this noble lord, it had never occurred to him that anyone would dare to defy the Verres family.

Even if some daring farmers wanted to do something, his fully armed soldiers were not to be trifled with.
