Chapter 87 - Chapter 87: Breaking the Backdoor

Chapter 87: Breaking the Backdoor

"Are you really ready? Once the ritual begins, it can't be stopped, and there might be risks."

Marcus looked at Jamie's listless appearance and asked again. He knew that Jamie wouldn't give up at this point.

"Father, I've been ready for ten years!"

Jamie said firmly.

Marcus nodded and had Jamie prepare a clean wooden board.

Jamie wiped off the dust, cleaned it with her backpack, and lay down.

Marcus took out chicken and dog blood and carved patterns around it, then took out a candle and placed it on the ground in front of Jamie's head.

"No regrets?"

"No regrets!"

Marcus looked at Jamie's eyes and nodded with satisfaction. He lit the candle, held his breath, and within seconds, Jamie had fainted.

Marcus took out the vortex serum he had bought when entering this story world. This stuff could be used to bond damaged tissue for healing, sterilize, and ignore rejection reactions—it was a good thing.

However, its quality was too low; it could only heal ordinary human tissue.

The seller sold such a small amount at such a high price because they believed that although the quantity was small, it had remarkable regenerative properties, hence the high price.

Can a blind person see evil spirits?

Jamie's ability to see supernatural entities came from her eyes, and Marcus was already curious about them.

Was it because of her psychic constitution that she had these eyes, or was her psychic constitution created by these eyes?

Marcus took out a scalpel, put on white gloves, and carefully removed Jamie's eyes.

He put the pair of bright, cat-like eyeballs into his personal storage.

Then he took out a pair of fresh eyeballs that he had obtained from some criminal scum the night before, who didn't need them anymore.

He coated each one with a drop of vortex serum and quickly placed them into Jamie's bleeding eye sockets.

With a twitch of her eyes, the loose eyeballs tightened in their sockets, like seeds taking root.

Marcus took out a cloth and wiped the blood from Jamie's cheeks, then injected her with a small amount of stimulant.

He then picked up the various items Jamie had bought and used them casually, just to make a show of it.

About ten minutes later, Jamie covered her forehead and slowly regained consciousness.

"Father, what happened to me?" Jamie looked at her body nervously.

"Do you feel anything different?"

Marcus didn't answer, but instead asked Jamie a question.

Hearing this, Jamie carefully observed the messy surroundings and glanced at the sunlight through the window. She blinked hard to confirm.

"It seems... it seems like things are more vibrant now."

"Before, when I looked at things, it always felt like they were shrouded in a layer of death, everything seemed cold and lifeless, but now I feel vitality and life. That coldness, that lifeless feeling, has completely disappeared."

"Father, have I succeeded? Will I never have to see those ominous, unclean things again, and will I no longer bring trouble to my family?"

Jamie said with some joy.

"You have succeeded, but it only drew out the evil spirit within you. However, the death omen you are marked with still exists."

"So you are still going to die soon."

Marcus's words seemed to pour a bucket of cold water on Jamie, and the smile on her face instantly froze.

"Good fortune and misfortune are intertwined. This is your last trial to escape your fate. Once you overcome it, you'll be safe and sound."

"Then what should I do?"

"I will naturally help you to the end. Go out this door and keep walking east. You will receive help from a benefactor. Follow this benefactor for 30 consecutive days, and the trial will pass."

"But you must remember one thing: this is the most ominous trial. From now on, you cannot contact any family members, including relatives and friends. You cannot tell them where you went or what you did. Even if they report you to the police or post missing person notices, you cannot let them find you."

"Otherwise, due to the curse, not only will you die, but they will also die."

"Life and death are in your hands!"

Marcus solemnly said these words to Jamie. Jamie nodded, thanked Marcus, and went out heading east.

Watching Jamie's departing figure, Marcus took out his communicator and sent Jamie's photo to Little Sheep, telling her to take Jamie away from the story's area, as far as possible, and only stop at a church or sanctuary.

"But Doctor, what if we're beyond 500 miles and the communicator can't reach you?"

Little Sheep, seeing the message, assured him she could handle it and asked this question.

"Use your cell phone,"

Marcus replied, leaving his anonymous number.

"...!"

Marcus ignored the string of ellipses Little Sheep sent, pondering Jamie's situation.

The reason he went through all that trouble to get those eyes from Jamie instead of forcibly removing them was because she was destined to be the Reaper's Sister.

After all, this world was called "The Descent of the Reaper."

With Jamie's unwavering trust, giving her normal eyes was reasonable.

If he forcibly removed them, in this world, even an ordinary college student like Lily could become a malevolent spirit; if he killed this girl with innate spiritual vision and a destined fate, who knows what would become of her?

Especially later, he was counting on Brother Kane playing the Reaper to deal with the Soul Collector; if someone with the Reaper's Sister's destiny killed him, he wondered if the Reaper would turn against him.

In the storyline, Jamie was chosen by the Soul Collector to use as the vessel for its transformation into human form.

So, Marcus took advantage of the situation to remove the eyes first, to see if Jamie would become mortal without them, and then had Little Sheep take Jamie far away.

He wondered what the Soul Collector's reaction would be when it fully awakened in a few days and discovered its chosen target had disappeared.

Having Little Sheep take Jamie away was also risky; if the Soul Collector really pursued them, Little Sheep would certainly not survive.

However, this risk was already very low. In the original storyline, the Soul Collector only lingered in one town, and in the Crossroads's world, there was no absolute safety.

At this level of risk and reward, Little Sheep had already made a profit.

Marcus turned and returned to his residence, outwardly continuing to play the role of Frank, while secretly researching and refining his plan.

He wouldn't dare relax his vigilance until he discovered the other four Keepers.

The next day, a memorial service was being held in the town, and the audience was filled with mourners.

Kyle led two young men, each carrying a phone stand with a camera lens mounted on it, around the stage from below to behind it.

One of them, wearing a green jacket and a baseball cap, with relatively handsome features, was James Webb, the protagonist of the first film.

He had already experienced a paranormal event and didn't want to film this kind of thing again, but his wife was about to give birth, and he needed to earn enough money for baby supplies, so he came anyway.

The other young man, with short, bleached hair and slightly cocky features, was Greyson Bear.
