Chapter 95 - Chapter 95: Where the Current Ends

Above the city, the grand formation was complete. At the same moment, a terrifying pressure descended on the burning tea house.

Broken roof tiles slid from the Quiet Cup. Smoke rolled through the open front of the tea house and across the street, but Jin Lang could still see the man within it.

Jin Lang had waited too long for this.

The two elders struck first.

The broad-shouldered elder came down from above the roofs while the scar-faced elder rushed through the smoke.

The inner disciples of the Bleeding Heaven Sect followed from both sides, their attacks crossing through the space where Shen Wuyan stood.

Shen Wuyan raised one hand and released a burst of force.

The air cracked.

The broad-shouldered elder flew back over the rooftops. The scar-faced elder hit the street hard enough to break the stone beneath his feet.

Every loose tile along the Quiet Cup jumped, and three inner disciples went through the remains of a shopfront.

Above them, the lines of the array burned brighter.

Shen Wuyan looked up.

He stepped into the air. His robes snapped downward as the pressure of the array bore down on him. His second step rose less than the first.

On the third, his cultivation flared. The array drew a current of qi from him, and the pressure on his body grew heavier.

He stopped.

Jin Lang smiled. "Attack."

The scar-faced elder lunged again. Shen Wuyan did not meet the attack with another burst of force.

He dropped beneath it, touched one foot to a leaning post, and turned. The scar-faced elder's strike passed over his shoulder and drove two inner disciples back instead.

The broad-shouldered elder descended behind him. Shen Wuyan shifted half a pace.

No shock crossed the street this time. No roof tiles lifted. He caught the broad-shouldered elder's wrist, drew him forward, and placed him between himself and the next attack.

The lines of the array dimmed.

Jin Lang's smile vanished.

Now he stayed close to the ground. He moved before each attack had formed, used one body to hinder another, and answered only with the strength each moment required.

Across the burning street, Shen Wuyan lowered his hand and held back his qi.

...

From the open doors of the Prince's pavilion, Peng Zhengbei looked up at the grand formation high above Redstone.

Its lines stretched across the night sky, enclosing the city beneath them.

He did not know what the grand formation had been raised to do.

Peng Zhengbei's expression grew more solemn the longer he stared at the grand formation overhead. He stepped out of the pavilion and shot into the air.

Three streets north of the burning tea house, light gathered above a formation flag on one rooftop before dividing toward the next flags.

He crossed the distance and raised one palm.

Peng Zhengbei did not probe the array. He released the full force of his cultivation.

The rooftop buckled.

The formation flag bent almost flat before the power gathered within it burst outward.

The light connecting the node to the surrounding flags broke apart, and the night above the city flashed white.

For one breath, darkness opened across that part of the array.

Then power passed around the broken node and joined again beyond it. The array shuddered, but it did not fall.

The formation flag remained bent. The node stayed dark.

Peng Zhengbei's cultivation surged again, and he struck a second time.

...

A second shock passed through the grand formation and reached the treatment room.

The four joined sheets snapped against the wall.

Under Wang Ben's spiritual sense, every open node in his mother's seal pulled sideways at once.

Wang Tiexin sent his qi into the loosened nodes, holding each one in place before it could tear her meridians apart.

The disturbance ran through the seal and reached its far side.

It should have faded there.

Instead, the ice qi wandering through Li Mei's freed meridians stopped. A heartbeat later, every strand turned toward her dantian and began to circulate.

Wang Tian stayed by her side.

Li Mei did not move. Her eyes stayed closed, and her breathing did not change.

Wang Tiexin looked up at her face. He had felt the change too, but neither he nor Wang Ben could see what had caused it.

Beyond the window, the grand formation flashed once.

Deep within the open seal, the new current did not fade.

...

The force behind Peng Zhengbei's second strike was still pressing into the damaged node when the grand formation changed.

The bent formation flag stayed dark.

Light flashed along the smaller connections above it.

Peng Zhengbei's arm trembled.

He cut off the attack at once, but more qi followed it, drawn from his meridians into the formation overhead.

Peng Zhengbei's brow furrowed.

His body dropped.

Peng Zhengbei's cultivation surged on instinct to hold him in the air.

The grand formation pulled harder at his qi.

His feet struck the broken rooftop hard enough to send tiles sliding into the street.

He fell to one knee, and blood filled his mouth.

A second layer must have activated when the node broke. Or the enemy controlling the grand formation had turned it against him.

Peng Zhengbei suppressed the surge of his cultivation.

The pull weakened, but it did not release him.

Above him, power still moved around the damage through the smaller connections.

The node was broken, but the grand formation continued to drain his qi.

...

At the Quiet Cup, Jin Lang saw Shen Wuyan give ground.

The broad-shouldered elder struck from above while the scar-faced elder closed from the street.

Shen Wuyan avoided both, but his landing was heavier than before.

Jin Lang stepped into the fight.

The grand formation had ignored every breath of his cultivation since it rose.

Its pressure had fallen on Shen Wuyan alone, exactly as it was meant to.

Jin Lang released his qi without restraint and drove one palm toward Shen Wuyan's chest.

The qi around Jin Lang's arm thinned before his palm reached Shen Wuyan.

His palm slowed.

More qi left his meridians and rose into the lines high above Redstone.

Jin Lang stumbled. He stared at his hand. "This should not be possible."

The scar-faced elder looked toward the broad-shouldered elder. Both faces darkened.

The scar-faced elder's next strike weakened in the same breath.

Above the street, the broad-shouldered elder dropped a full pace before catching himself.

Techniques in the hands of the inner disciples flickered and failed.

Several drew back a step, their eyes moving from their hands to Jin Lang.

Shen Wuyan's eyes sharpened as he looked to the two elders.

Then Jin Lang's cultivation surged against the unexpected drain, and the grand formation pulled harder.

Shen Wuyan moved through the failing palm strike. He was slower than he had been when the street first broke beneath him, but Jin Lang was slower still.

Shen Wuyan caught Jin Lang's wrist, turned beneath his arm, and used Jin Lang's own forward motion to drive him past.

A short strike to the ribs sent Jin Lang across the broken stones without any burst of qi behind it.

Jin Lang ended his technique.

The drain weakened, but it did not stop.

Across the street, Shen Wuyan remained low and still. His breathing had roughened, and he did not spend the strength to pursue.

Both elders looked to Jin Lang.

Shen Wuyan watched Jin Lang instead of the formation overhead.

For one breath, no one attacked.

...

In the west-facing rooms of the City Lord's residence, Lord Cai Hongwen watched the light above Redstone from the same dark window.

The struggle around the Quiet Cup was almost finished. By morning, the Wang Clan would have lost the hidden strength behind it.

The final session would become a formality. Huo Zhenyang would bow, the other clans would follow, and Redstone would pass into the Cai Clan's hands without the Crimson Bastion sending a single soldier.

After Redstone came the Blackwood seat.

The Tie Clan might keep it through the war, but the Crimson Bastion would have to acknowledge what Cai Hongwen had become. He had crossed into mortal shedding. He had bought the time needed to take the rest.

His qi slipped during an ordinary breath.

The aura filling the room thinned. Cai Hongwen frowned and circulated his qi to steady his cultivation.

It did not settle.

A strand of qi lifted from his meridians. High beyond the window, one of the pale lines brightened.

He circulated harder.

The pull strengthened. His hands trembled, and his breath came short.

Cai Hongwen stepped back from the window and forced his qi through his meridians again. The strength returned for half a breath, then left him faster than before.

A hard tremor ran through his lower abdomen. His aura buckled. Qi struck one channel, forced sideways into the next, and burned through his chest.

Cai Hongwen pressed one hand below his ribs and tried to stop the circulation. The qi caught, shuddered, and began to fall away.

His eyes went to the door. He forced everything he could reach through the remaining channels.

The pale line beyond the window flared. Cai Hongwen's legs folded beneath him.

A small brass bell rested beside the tea tray on the low table. He struck the table with one hand and reached for it with the other.

His fingers scraped across the wood and stopped short.

Cai Hongwen fell onto his side. The last breath left him against the floor, and no second breath followed.

The brass bell remained where it was.

...

In the treatment room, Wang Tiexin had not stopped.

The old seal had been fully opened. His qi held the unfinished work in place while Wang Ben followed it with his spiritual sense.

Wang Ben opened his mouth to call the next node.

Wang Tiexin raised two fingers. "Wait."

His qi did not withdraw. He divided one thread from the work and followed the changed flow through the node he had just laid.

"The node is stable," Wang Tiexin said slowly. "But her qi is circulating as though it were not there."

Wang Ben moved his spiritual sense through the same node.

A separate flow of qi was entering through the unfinished seal.

At Li Mei's wrist, Wang Tian shifted his fingers and counted beneath his breath. Then he pressed two fingers against the side of her throat.

"Her pulse is slowing," Wang Tian said. "Her breath has not changed, but her skin is colder. This is not recovery."

Wang Ben followed the incoming qi away from the node.

It joined the ice qi that had begun circulating when the second shock passed through the open seal, and both flowed toward her dantian as though she were cultivating. Wang Ben followed them through her meridians, but they disappeared from his spiritual sense before they reached it.

Wang Tiexin spread his sense through the re-laid nodes and followed the incoming qi to where it crossed the unfinished seal. Then he looked toward the window.

A pale formation line brightened beyond the estate wall. The incoming qi strengthened at the same moment.

Wang Tiexin's eyes narrowed.

Wang Tian bent closer to her face.

Li Mei's right hand closed around his wrist.

Her fingers tightened one at a time, firm and exact. She lifted his hand from her throat and placed it beside her on the bench.

Wang Tian did not move. "Mei?"

Li Mei opened her eyes.

Her gaze passed across Wang Tian's face without pause. It moved over Wang Ben, then Wang Tiexin, then the four-sheet diagram on the wall.

Wang Tiexin's qi remained steady inside the unfinished seal, but his face had gone still as he stared at Li Mei.

Then she turned her head toward the light beyond the window.
