Chapter 1 - Prologue

I always considered myself part of the system; I never had any conflict with that idea.

However, when I began to observe the world from the shadows, I understood that such programming could be broken.

I don't say this out of vanity or as a form of boasting. Nor is it a metaphor, a hyperbole, or a rhetorical statement meant to impress. It is not symbolism or literary exaggeration.

"You're different, Hikari..." —that's what they used to tell me. Who? That no longer matters. The only thing that mattered at that moment was my survival. And now, as I slowly made my way toward the academy, I could only wonder if I could get away with it once again.

Only one question remained:

What is the variable that will change the constant of destiny?

Surprisingly, I didn't know—and that worried me more than I was willing to admit.
