Sound was not a crack. It was a deep and tectonic boom. It vibrated through soles of boots of Link. Ancient ice had stood for eight thousand years. Now it shuddered under psychic weight of figure below.
[Warning: Structural Integrity Compromised]
[Status: Magical Suppression Field Active]
[Effect: System Skills restricted to 50 percent power]
"Link! Ice is giving way!" Jon Snow screamed. He grabbed a heavy iron post to keep from sliding toward a thousand foot drop.
A fissure glowing with eerie blue light raced across summit of Wall. It was not natural melting. It was a localized earthquake of sorcery. Link looked down at pale rider. Night King slowly lowered a hand. Trembling stopped but damage was done. A section of outer rampart crumbled and fell into darkness like a mountain of glass.
[New Objective: Hold Breach]
[Alert: Enemy climbing speed increased by 300 percent]
Silence that followed was worse than boom. Then scratching started. Thousands of skeletal hands began to claw way up side of Wall. They were not using lift or tunnel. They came up vertical face like a tide of white insects.
"They are coming over top!" Jon yelled while drawing Longclaw.
Link wiped frost from eyes. System was flashing red and warning him of stamina drain. "We cannot hold whole summit, Jon! We must bottleneck them at stairs!"
Suddenly a shadow loomed over beacon. A wight larger than any Link had seen clambered over edge. It was a giant with skin like frozen stone. It swung a club made of a weirwood trunk and shattered signal fire. Burning logs scattered across ice.
[Target: Wight Giant. Rank B]
[Health: 5,000 / 5,000]
"Jaime! Get archers up here!" Link roared into comms link. He hoped signal could pierce magical interference.
There was only static.
Giant let out a sound like a grinding glacier and lunged. Link dove between massive legs of creature. Wind of swing nearly knocked him off edge. He sliced upward with blackened blade but steel only bit an inch into frozen hide.
"It is too cold!" Link shouted. "Steel is brittle!"
"Use pitch!" Jon yelled. He pointed to a secondary barrel of oil that had not been knocked over.
Link saw plan. As giant turned to crush Jon, Link sprinted for barrel. He did not just tip it. He used his Adrenaline Surge to heave entire weight of barrel at chest of giant. Oil splashed across frozen torso.
"Jon! Now!"
Jon Snow did not miss. He swung his sword through a lingering ember on ground. Valyrian steel caught spark and transferred it to giant. Creature ignited instantly and became a massive screaming pillar of blue and orange flame.
Giant stumbled as massive weight shifted too far back. With a final earth shaking roar, it fell backward over edge. It took a dozen smaller wights with it.

[Ability Unlocked: Dragon glass Synthesis. You can now temper common steel with frozen fire.]
Link looked at new prompt but there was no time to celebrate. First of common wights were now cresting Wall every ten feet.
"We must go down," Link said while grabbing shoulder of Jon. "If we stay here, we will be surrounded in minutes. We meet King at gates."
As they ran for iron cage, Link looked back one last time. Rider on pale horse was gone. In his place was a single blue eyed crow perched on edge of ice. It watched them.
