Day four was turning out to be a hot one already. The sun beat down on their clearing relentlessly. Mikael opened the kiln and smiled, the vase and cups were done and could be used now.
They each carried a container down to the river and filled them up, drinking heartily from them before refilling them. After relieving themselves, they started to walk back to camp carefully as to not trip and break the new containers.
On the way back though they made a discovery. Potatoes and carrots growing near each other which brought a smile to their faces. They returned to there home and carefully set down the containers of water before returning with trowels to dig them up.
It was a decent sized harvest, one they were happy to find. They cut up several potatoes and stored them in a cool, dry and dark spot of the home so they could sprout. Once they sprouted, they would be planted and grown.
The carrots were left alone for now since once you cut them off from the stem part they would go bad quickly. They too were stored like the cut potatoes.
After breakfast they got to work. Josiah dug while Mikael made a clay pot and bowls. He also mixed some clay with some dead grass and shaped it into a box and put that into the kiln also.
Afterwards he joined Josiah in expanding the base, both digging with renewed vigor. They were sitting outside eating lunch when they heard it, a earth shaking roar that shook them to their bones.
A shadow passed over their camp, causing them to look up. Their eyes constricted, what they saw was beautiful yet terrifying. A huge dragon soared through the sky freely, unchallenged.
Mikael's mind raced, never did he think they had been sent to a world where creatures like dragons existed. It made him wonder, what else did they not know about this world?
The dragon flew off, not noticing them thankfully. "Holy shit, that was a Dragon!" Mikael nodded his head.
"This changes things a lot brother. If dragons exist here, what else lurks in this world? Does magic exist? Are there other races? What kinds of weapons are used and what's the political system like if there's one at all?"
Josiah nodded his head, understanding clearly written on his face. He stands up and wipes his hands off. "We need to work faster and harder if we are to survive this. Kinda makes me wonder how we got here anyways."
I nod my head, neither of us have any memory of Valhalla or the gods. "I've no idea but we will make the best out of it. You keep digging, I'm gonna start on other projects."
Seeing him nod, I turned and began on another project. Days turned into weeks as weeks turned into months. It was now late fall/early winter and things had changed quite a bit.
Our home had been expanded quite a bit. It now had food storage, shelves, walls and a door. We each had our own bedroom. The beds were made from wood and mud with a "pipe" leading to the exit of our home. We could light a fire underneath them and close a door on it which would warm the bed and bedroom up nicely. The pipes allowed the smoke to exit our home.
We had hunted and processed a few dozen more animals. Sheep, deer, goat, boar and hundreds of fish. Some of the pelts had been turned into clothing which was quite warm and comfortable while also being waterproof.
We also had captured several wild chickens and now had access to eggs and feathers as well as whole chickens whenever they got too old or stopped laying eggs which ties into the next thing.
We now have bows which was a huge help with hunting. We had gotten extremely lucky when we found a old deer that was dying and killed it. We didn't risk eating the meat as it may have had some disease but the pelt, antlers and sinew were kept.
Our storage was overstuffed with food and we had several dozen pots and containers of potatoes. We had even stumbled on a small salt mine which was a huge blessing to us as it added some flavor to our meals.
Mikael's POV
Today was a cold one and I was out hunting, seeing if I could get us one last pelt and some more meat before every creature went into hibernation. I had been out here for several hours already and had managed to hunt several rabbits and foxes when I heard it.
A low, menacing growl was heard from behind me. Looking down from my perch in the tree I was in I was met by the eyes of a giant grizzly bear.
Instinctively I loosed an arrow into its eye which only seemed to enrage it. It's large paw swatted my leg, leaving a nasty gash down it. I fell from the tree as my leg gave out from underneath me, falling right on the arrow which forced it deeper in the grizzlies eye socket into its brain.
It died immediately and we both fell to the ground. Josiah, hearing the bears roar, comes rushing to me. Unbeknownst to me, four medium sized grizzly cubs were approaching me but he solved that quickly by slitting their throats.
I was already feeling sick, something on the bears claws had gotten into my wound and immediately made me nauseous and lightheaded.
Josiah talked to me as he carried me back to base but I didn't understand a word he said. He laid me on my bed and started tending to my wound with clean water.
Using fish bone needles and a thin but sturdy plant fiber we had discovered, he sewed my leg up before covering me up. He disappeared for hours before returning and saying something else I didn't understand.
For the next week I was in and out of consciousness and with fever. When the fever cleared I felt like shit but I was alive.
Josiah came in to check on me, holding a huge brown pelt that looked like it belonged to the grizzly I'd killed. He smiled when he saw me before smacking the shit out of the back of my head.
What followed was a lecture about being stupid and and biting off more than I could chew. It was then I learned about the cubs as well.
"Look I didn't know about the cubs. Hell the bear in general surprised the hell out of me. It didn't make a sound until it was beneath me. If it hadn't of growled at me first, I'd be dead. I guess grizzlies are silent so that's something else to worry about."
Josiah was surprised to hear that. "Silent bears? You're not joking are you?" Seeing me shake my head his face went pale.
I prop myself up on my elbows. "Yeah, the fucker was silent. I was hoping for a deer or goat, not a bear. I guess now we need to build a spiked barricade and surround out home with it. That's gonna take forever."
Seeing him nod I gesture to the pelt. "Anyways that bear was huge. I was up in a tree about 16 feet up and it's face was super close to me. That's a whole lotta pelt for one guy, I'm thinking we make cloaks out of it."
With that we talked some more before I was able to eat and then fall asleep.
