Chapter 16 - Chapter 7: Thorn’s Choice

Chapter 7: Thorn's Choice

Rain pounds the city like a relentless drum. Nocturne's neon lights flicker against puddles, reflecting chaos and fear. Somewhere in the distance, sirens wail—but not for Kael. Not yet.

Detective Elias Thorn stands atop a rooftop, gun drawn, eyes locked on a shadow moving below. He recognizes the silhouette instantly.

Kael Voss.

THE CONFRONTATION

Elias steps forward, voice steady despite the storm:

"Kael. Stop."

Kael pauses mid-leap across a rooftop, mask catching neon reflections.

"Thorn." His voice is calm, almost tired.

"You're not police anymore. Stay out of this."

Elias tightens his grip on the gun.

"Not anymore? Or never? You've been hunting ghosts while I've been fighting shadows—and now the city is bleeding."

Kael lands.

"I don't fight for the city. I fight for survival. And the innocent."

Elias swallows. Memories flood back—warzones, missions, the man Kael once was.

"I know who you were. But who are you now?"

THE MORAL DILEMMA

Below, Black Crown operatives storm a nearby district, civilians trapped in the chaos. Mara Kade watches from her control hub, smirking at the live feed.

Kael and Elias's standoff is tense.

"You'll kill me if I step in?" Elias asks.

Kael doesn't answer.

"I have to," Elias continues. "Or hundreds die tonight."

Kael studies him.

"Then you fight your own war, Detective. I fight mine."

Elias hesitates. Every fiber of his being battles between law, loyalty, and the man he once called a brother-in-arms.

Finally, he lowers his gun, voice grim:

"I'm not stopping you. But if you go too far… I'll stop you myself."

Kael nods.

"That's fair."

BLACK CROWN ESCALATES

Meanwhile, Mara Kade unleashes chaos across the city:

Explosions in corporate districts.

Drones targeting police HQ and hospitals.

Subways rerouted to trap civilians.

Iris guides Kael through the chaos, hacking cameras, stopping drones, and directing civilians to safety.

Kael moves like a ghost, shadowing through debris, stopping threats silently, while Mara's traps keep coming.

THE TURNING POINT

During the rooftop chase, Viktor Hale appears again, enhanced speed and cybernetic precision making him a deadly threat.

Kael ducks behind scaffolding. Viktor strikes, but Elias intervenes—shooting with precision to disarm, not kill.

The three men's eyes meet: hunter, ghost, and ex-brother-in-arms.

Elias's choice is clear: he will not let Kael die, but he will not interfere in the Wraith's justice.

Viktor vanishes into the night, Mara Kade watching every second.

ENDING NOTE

Kael and Iris stand atop a rooftop, surveying Nocturne burning below.

"You made a choice," Kael says quietly.

Elias's voice comes over the comm—filtered, steady:

"I chose the city… the one I can still save."

Iris glances at Kael.

"He's not your enemy anymore. Maybe he never was."

Kael nods.

"But Mara Kade is still out there. And the hunt isn't over."

The city waits. Silent. Watching. Breathing.

The shadows have shifted, but the war has only just begun.
