Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: Veil of Night

Night brought a suffocating darkness over a city overtaken by the dead. Buildings loomed like tombstones, alleys twisted with shadows, and every corner hid lurking threats. Kael moved silently, the Sight extending like tendrils through the darkness, revealing hidden threads of souls preparing for attack.

Each soul carried intent, fear, or memory, and Kael had to discern carefully who posed danger to the living. Shadows lunged, skeletal arms reached, and decayed faces twisted in silent screams. Kael acted decisively, neutralizing threats with precision. The hunger surged violently, seductive and insistent, but he channeled it into control, feeding only on the smallest fragments necessary to stabilize the remaining souls.

Hours passed as he moved through the city, silent but vigilant, balancing aggression with restraint. Each successful intervention strengthened his confidence, the Sight becoming an extension of his will. Occasionally, he paused to ground himself in the reality of the living, touching walls, breathing deeply, reminding himself that he was neither dead nor entirely consumed by his abilities.

By dawn, the ruins were calm, the dead restrained, and the few living survivors untouched. Kael felt both triumph and the heavy burden of every choice he had made, aware that the moral weight of control was as taxing as the physical exertion. The hunger pulsed patiently, yet Kael's mastery had deepened, and for the first time, he could feel a measure of balance between power and restraint.
