Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The years that pass

° USA, Columbus °

Within a desert, a military base can be seen. This base belonged to SHILD. Inside an office, a black man could be seen wearing a trench coat and an eye patch. It was none other than the director of SHILD, Nick Fury, who was having a terrible week.

"Sir, I'm afraid we haven't found any trace of the mutant," a high-ranking commander said sheepishly. He was one of those in charge of the search for the mutant's mysterious disappearance, but he found nothing all week.

"Nothing, that's all I have from everyone here, I want you to bring me something next week or I'm going to demote you to captain!" Nick shouted in frustration, this whole week has been one of defeats.

In 1994, a newly recruited agent heard a rumor that a mutant was living in an orphanage. After an investigation, they discovered the first mutant born as one, but who didn't become one. She was a girl named Rumi Usagiyama, the epitome of cuteness, a brown-haired girl with rabbit-like features, from her white fur to her tail and ears. She seemed like an ordinary child, except for her ears and tail, until she demonstrated superhuman strength for someone her age and began to show some kind of precognition, capable of dodging things that would be impossible without knowing they were going to attack. However, it seemed to only work with things that threatened her life or could harm her. He considered taking her to a facility to train her as a SHILD agent, but decided it was a bad idea. He didn't know why the X-Men hadn't come for her, but he didn't risk getting into a conflict with them. He planned to wait five years to see if they would come for her. If they didn't, she would have She was 7 years old and could be trained and indoctrinated, but only 4 years later she is kidnapped and the orphanage where she lived exploded, that happened last week and since then a whole group of SHILD has been in charge of the search for her.

"I hope she's okay. I guess we lost an asset because we hesitated too much," Nick lamented, knowing that she's most likely out of the country, in some laboratory.

Westchester, New York

Within a 4-hectare wooded area stood an elegant mansion with a group of unique individuals; it was the Xavier Mansion. Inside a bunker beneath the house sat a bald man in a wheelchair; it was none other than the infamous Charles Xavier, an alpha mutant known as the most powerful telepath in the world. He was in the device known as the Cerebro, trying to find the mutant who had escaped.

"She never showed up, Charles, so why do you think she will now? We don't even know if she really existed or not," Logan asked indifferently, with a slight annoyance. He didn't like the whole thing at all.

A few months ago, a rumor reached them about a 6-year-old mutant living in an orphanage in Brooklyn. Charles rushed to the brain to confirm this information but found nothing, so it remained just that, a rumor, until a week ago when an orphanage in Brooklyn exploded. This couldn't be a coincidence. Charles decided that instead of searching for the mutant, he would search people's minds to see if they knew of one. He knew it was immoral to spy on other people's minds, but it concerned the safety of a young mutant, and he was horrified to see what he saw in the mind of one of the nuns who worked there. The girl not only lived there but also suffered discrimination from everyone she knew, and he saw how the girl was being chased by the military, but she did nothing.

"I saw her, she existed, she was a dark-haired girl with white hair, crimson eyes and rabbit-like features, she existed and suffered in that orphanage, she was a beautiful girl and they treated her like a monster, if it weren't for the head nun they would have left her to die in the street," he said with sadness and pity for the girl, Charles knew that mutants were not treated well but he didn't think it would be to this extent.

"That's the reality, whether we like it or not, we have to find her. According to what I saw in the nuns' memories, she was born a mutant and was left at the orphanage door by a light. There must be a reason why she was kidnapped. We can't allow a young mutant to suffer in a laboratory," Charles said sadly and firmly to convey his will to his friends.

"But how will we do it? Cerebro isn't capable of detecting her. There's no trace of her existence in any of the major spy agencies—the FBI, CIA, NATO, KGB—no record of her. The only evidence of her existence is the memoirs of the nuns at the orphanage and a photo we were able to salvage from the site," asked Hank McCoy, better known as 'the beast.' Although he believed his friend Charles was right and that this girl did exist, it was still impossible to find her with all the information they had.

"Did she have any friends or family who cared about her?" Ororo Monroe, better known as 'storm', asked sadly, as she looked at the worn photo of one of the most beautiful girls she had ever seen. The photo showed a 4 year old rabbit girl holding a ball and smiling at the camera. It was sad to know that such a beautiful girl was treated so badly just because of her race.

"According to our investigation, those closest to her were the head nun and a friend. Thanks to our investigations, we know that the nun died in the explosion. As for the friend, the FBI found her body in the sewers with a bullet in her head," McCoy said bitterly, lamenting how cruel fate had been to that girl.

"We can't do anything, she exists but that won't change the fact that they already have her, they'll never let her go," Logan said seriously. He doesn't hate that girl, but that's the reality. She'd be lucky if she survives whatever they do to her, but he doesn't think she'll make it out in one piece.

"We can only keep searching, this was our mistake, if we had been more careful she would never have suffered, I want all the teachers to investigate where she could have disappeared, I will search with my brain all the places she could be," Charles said firmly, hoping that the girl was safe and sound.

° 1 year later °

Inside Hydra's base in Sokovia, in a cold cell, a 7-year-old girl with rabbit-like features could be seen, tied to a chair with a straitjacket, a muzzle, and surrounded by huge chains that tightened her body. It was Rumi who was asleep. After a few minutes, alarms sounded and Rumi woke up. Guards entered through the door and surrounded her as they began to remove her chains, muzzle, and straitjacket.

"The doctor wants you in his office, maybe he'll finally start your demon training. Aren't you happy? You can finally kill things," he said mockingly, though Rumi ignored him.

She was rambling about everything that had happened since she was kidnapped.

It's been a while since they locked me up. From what I could gather, I was in Sokovia. Those sons of bitches exported me like I was drugs. Besides that, they experimented on my adaptability factor. I gained immunity to poisons, fire, low temperatures, electricity, acids—a whole bunch of things. It made me more lethal than before. Even I was surprised that I didn't look like a real mutant with everything they did to me. I guess the regenerative factor wasn't just for show. They also tried to figure out what made me function, but they couldn't decipher it. I suspect it's because of the ROB. For a whole year, they've been trying to test me in hostile environments. I got stronger, though I didn't show it. I knew I couldn't leave yet; they could still knock me out. During all this time, I've calmed down. I still want to kill all of Hydra, but I know that can be done later. First, I have to escape this base. All year, I've been reducing my aggression. I understood that My impulsiveness is what made me ignore Margot's suggestions, which ended in her death and my capture. For months after the anger subsided, I felt like trash. It was my mistake that cost the life of the only important person I had left. I foolishly believed everything would turn out alright because that's what I wanted. After much torture and self-loathing, when I was alone and made sure no one saw me, I cried like a baby. I felt unworthy of all the gifts they gave me. I swore revenge, and I will have it. I pretended to start obeying. I wanted them to believe they had their soldier, that I would give them every advantage they could. When I'm ready, I will kill them one by one without mercy. I am calm. I finally have a goal, and they will all die. That was my promise.

"Focus, bunny, we'll be at the doctor's office soon," said the soldier as he lightly tapped Rumi on the arm.

She reacted and focused on what she had to do, pretending that Hydra had broken her and that they had her soldier.

After a long journey, he arrived at the office where Dr. Charles was waiting for him. When the doctor saw Rumi, he was pleased and hit him to see how he would react. Rumi just held back and did nothing.

"It's good to see what you've learned about your place in life, subject 6r," the scientist said with amusement. Rumi just nodded, but inwardly vowed not only to kill this guy but to torture him and return everything he did to him, but for now he just nodded.

"I understand my place in the world, sir," Rumi said firmly. After all, she couldn't leave yet, not without first making sure that all the data stored here was destroyed, from her DNA samples and information about her abilities to technological advancements.

"That's good to see. I don't like to waste time, so I want you assigned to the training pavilion. You'll learn everything a soldier should. You'll become Hydra's weapon, while you help me uncover that fascinating DNA you have," the scientist said firmly and seriously. He had tried to decipher Rumi's genetic code, but hadn't succeeded yet. He needed to accelerate his progress, so he had no time to lose.

"As you command, doctor," Rumi said monotonously as he withdrew; the plan was beginning.

The next day Rumi woke up and went to the training pavilions. Upon arrival, she was greeted by one of the super soldiers they had there.

"You've arrived, today will be your training. As a Hydra weapon, you must be sharpened and polished. Today we're going to get rid of everything that's useless," the soldier said coldly as Rumi just nodded.

"Let's fight, I want to know what level you're at," he said as he got into a fighting stance.

Rumi didn't wait any longer and with a leap she was in front of him with one foot raised ready to kick, however he reacted quickly and with one blow sent Rumi flying several meters away from him, she recovered quickly and with another leap managed to kick him in the ribs, he complained but remained firm while grabbing her foot, and slammed her furiously against the ground, after freeing herself she tried to kick him in the head but the soldier dodged it by the skin of his teeth, Rumi jumped away creating distance between them.

"You're very impulsive, you wasted energy on pointless movements, we have a lot to correct, I hope you're ready," the soldier said rudely.

"I always am," Rumi said confidently, as she followed her new teacher to be taught.

"The first thing you're going to learn is to never betray Hydra," the soldier said with hatred and bitterness as he pushed Rumi into a room.

"This room was made especially for you. It will be a test of endurance. You have to be here for one month. It's designed to suit your powers and cause you as much pain as possible. I hope you enjoy this," the soldier said as he looked at Rumi, waiting for fear or any emotion.

Rumi simply entered and nodded. She knew that hell awaited her during her training; she was ready to endure everything. She would avenge Margot and her mother.

After entering, she braced herself for all the pain that was coming and in just a few moments she was attacked by sonic waves capable of exploding people, but she endured, then she was bombarded with acid all over.

Rumi knew she wouldn't stop; she would become the monster that Hydra fears, it just takes time.
