Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Caleb Bell's Confession

Caleb's heart skipped a beat. 'She's not happy...'

He put down his wine glass and took her hands in his.

"Little girl, if you're unhappy, just divorce him. I can take care of you." Summer laughed and pulled her hands away.

"Caleb, you're drunk. The person you should be taking care of is your girlfriend, not me, right?"

"Little girl, I like you. I've liked you ever since college. Always." Summer's smile froze on her face. His tone didn't sound like he was joking. 'Did he wait for me all through college? Is that why he never dated? And here I was, thinking of him as an older brother the whole time. I'm such an idiot for never noticing.'

"Caleb, you're drunk." She truly didn't know what to say, so she used his intoxication as an excuse. Seeing her reaction, Caleb didn't press the issue. After dinner, Caleb drove Summer back to the Veridian Community. She got out of the car.

"Summer, please think about what I said." Summer stopped in her tracks but didn't turn around. A few seconds passed, and then she strode toward her apartment building.

As she was changing her shoes by the door, she noticed a light on inside. 'Who's here? Could it be Mom?'

"Mom?" However, the person who came out gave her a start. It was Kenneth Yates. 'Didn't he say he wouldn't be living here anymore?'

"Kenneth, you... What are you doing here?"

"This is my home. Can't I be here?" he shot back. Summer was speechless. He was wearing pajamas, his hair still not completely dry. 'Is he... planning on staying here?' Summer could no longer remain calm.

"Um, Kenneth, you're just here to pick up some things, right?" Summer forced an unnatural smile.

"This is my home. Can't I live here?" Kenneth Yates picked up a coffee cup.

"Um, Kenneth, have you eaten? I can make you dinner."

"I already ate. With Audrey." 'With Audrey...' 'What is he really up to, coming back here today? I can't figure it out, and I don't want to.' Summer glanced at her watch and said awkwardly,

"It's getting late, Kenneth."

"Are you trying to hint at something?"

"No, no!" she said, quickly waving her hands. Kenneth advanced on her, one step at a time.

"It's been two years. You must be lonely." By now, he was less than a fist's length away. She could hear his heartbeat clearly. His next words, however, sent Summer plummeting into despair.

"But no matter how lonely you get, you shouldn't be bringing strange men to my company. I may have said I'd leave you alone, but you can't just cuckold me in public, can you?" He slammed a hand against the wall, trapping her in the space before him.

"What? Kenneth, what are you talking about?" She looked up, meeting his dark eyes. Kenneth Yates gripped her chin forcefully.

"Do I need to spell out the good deed you did? This afternoon, at the entrance to the company, weren't you the one who left in another man's car?"

"Kenneth, let go! You're hurting me! That was my senior from college, it's not what you think."

"You'd better not let me see the two of you together again," Kenneth Yates said viciously.

Summer scrambled back to the bedroom, leaning against the door and gasping for breath, her face flushed. After a moment, she locked the door. For some reason, she was a little afraid of him. 'If I lock the door, surely he won't stay here tonight, right?'

Kenneth Yates tried the door but found it locked. A smirk played on his lips.

"Heh. Trying to play hard to get?"
