The commissioner could have continued living such a hedonistic, dream-like life until the day she grew tired of it. Then, she would probably wash her hands of it all, take her savings, find a small place, and live out her days in leisure.
However, in the summer of her twenty-sixth year, the world suddenly changed.
Starting from a certain day, daytime temperatures skyrocketed, while nighttime temperatures plummeted to an unimaginable degree.
Then came the animals around them, growing more frantic by the day. They even broke free from their beloved owners, vanishing without a trace.
Next were the plants. Water sources turned murky and foul-smelling, and the soil became increasingly acidic. The germination rate of planted seeds dropped below five percent, and even those that sprouted struggled to grow. Because the falling rain was highly corrosive, downpour after downpour eroded the few tender seedlings that managed to sprout until they withered and died.
