Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Not Worth It

"Grace."

Grace Winslow slept soundly that night.

Irene Lynch had watched over her all night, and by the middle of the night, her fever had finally broken.

The next morning, as soon as Grace Winslow opened her eyes, she saw the last person she wanted to see.

Her face fell, and she asked coldly, "What are you doing here?"

"I know I've wronged you. I... I don't know how to explain." A placating smile touched Caleb Forrest's face as he offered her the thermos in his hands. "I heard you were sick, so I came especially to see you. I made you some porridge. Won't you have a little?"

Grace Winslow just gave a cold laugh. "I've never liked porridge."

Caleb Forrest froze. "R-Right... I'm sorry, I..."

"You don't have to apologize. You haven't wronged me. Maybe we were just never right for each other to begin with."

"Caleb Forrest, let's just part amicably. If you agree to the divorce without a fuss, I'll actually respect you more."

"After what happened, there's absolutely no future for us."

Grace Winslow's attitude was firm, without a hint of hesitation.

Caleb Forrest felt a bitter taste in his mouth and in his heart.

His eyes red, he looked at Grace. "You said that no matter what happened, you would never leave me."

"There's really nothing between Ivy White and me. Don't you trust me at all?"

"Grace, I love you. You're the only person I've ever loved. Maybe Ivy White and I did have something in the past, but believe me, I have absolutely no feelings for her now. I just see her as my comrade's wife. I owe Jason, and I'm just trying to make things right."

"Grace, I'm begging you. I don't want a divorce. At least give me a chance to make it up to you, to fix this."

Grace Winslow looked at the earnest man before her.

She believed that Caleb Forrest probably had truly loved her once.

Perhaps he even still had feelings for her now.

But if she chose to forgive him, then every time she and Ivy White had a conflict in the future, he would unhesitatingly choose to stand by Ivy's side and ignore her.

'This wasn't the life she wanted.'

'She was still young; she didn't want to waste her life away over a man. It wasn't worth it.'

"Caleb Forrest, if one day, Ivy White and I were both in danger at the same time, and you could only save one of us, who would you choose?" Grace Winslow asked, her expression unreadable.

The same thing had happened in her past life. Back then, Caleb Forrest had chosen Ivy White without a moment's hesitation, abandoning her.

At the time, she had naively believed Caleb was just acting out of a sense of greater duty, for the sake of his fallen comrade.

Hearing this, Caleb Forrest froze for a moment, staring at Grace as if he couldn't believe she would ask such a question.

After a moment's hesitation, he finally said, "I... I would choose you, of course."

"You hesitated, Caleb Forrest. That means you can't be sure. If that day ever really came, you wouldn't know if you'd choose her or me."

"I may love you very much, but, Caleb Forrest, I'm a purist when it comes to love. I can't accept the person I love always saving a place in his heart for another woman."

"Before you came to see me, you were running around everywhere for Ivy White's sake, weren't you?"

"The truth is, you've already made your choice in your heart."

"I don't want to say any more. As for the divorce, I hope you'll go home and think it over carefully. I need to rest now. Please leave."

Caleb Forrest opened his mouth, wanting to explain, but the words died on his lips.

He set the porridge down. "At least eat something. I..."

"Take your things and go. I don't need them."
