I stood behind the heavy velvet curtains, staring down at the sprawling lawn from above like a predator perched in the dark, watching a stage where she had no legitimate right to exist.
I watched her drop to her knees in the damp grass. I saw Adam lift his tiny palm toward her, and I watched her pull him into a fierce, suffocating embrace, her eyes squeezed shut as if clutching a lifeline tossed straight from the gates of hell. I couldn't hear a single word from up here, but I didn't need to; her entire posture screamed what words were too cowardly to utter.
My fingers dug into the velvet fabric until my knuckles turned stark white and my nails bit deep into my palms.
