Not the performed stillness. The real kind. The kind that meant something had landed that was too large to have an immediate reaction to and her body had made the decision to just....stop....while her mind caught up.

"Morvaine," she said.

Quiet. Flat.

"Yes," Damian said.

"That's...." She stopped. Started again. "That's the same bloodline as...."

"Yes," Silas said.

Same bloodline as the witch histories. Same bloodline that the Conclave had declared extinct forty years ago. Same bloodline that apparently had at least one surviving member who had been hiding in plain sight long enough to write letters and watch and wait and choose this specific moment to stop waiting.

Eve put the letter down.

Picked it up again.

Read the line a second time.

I was present the night Azrael and Lilith died. I could not stop what happened.

Damon watched her face.

Watched her read that line.

Watched what it did to her.

He wanted to say something. Didn't. Some moments you left alone.
