Chapter 7 - Promises and Neon

Chapter 7

The medical monitors in the high-security suite didn't beep; they hummed with a soft, expensive rhythm. The air here didn't smell of rust or ozone—it smelled of nothing, filtered to perfection by industrial-grade purifiers.

Kael stood by the window of the new apartment he'd secured in the mid-tier levels of Sector 7. It wasn't a palace, but compared to the damp, lightless hole they'd called home in the slums, it was a paradise.

[FLASHBACK: The Ghost in the Vault]

Three hours earlier, while the clinic was still reeling from the chaos of the confrontation, Kael hadn't just been running. He had paused at Marcus's terminal, which the Guild Master had left unlocked in his panicked flight.

The System had reacted instantly to his proximity to the Guild's private network.

[LUCK CHECK: BYPASSING ENCRYPTION...]

[SUCCESS: HIDDEN ACCOUNT 'VULCAN' DISCOVERED]

Kael wasn't a hacker by trade, but with his Infinite Luck stat, every password he guessed turned out to be the right one. Every security protocol he brushed against glitched just enough to open a backdoor. He watched the numbers scroll across the holographic display: the Guild's accounts were fueled by the blood and sweat of Riders like him.

With a swift gesture, he initiated a ghost transfer.

100,000... 250,000... 600,000...

Just as the firewalls began to snap shut like steel jaws, he diverted everything into a series of encrypted anonymous accounts. Marcus wasn't just physically beaten; he was financially erased.

[THE RIDER'S LEDGER]

Kael briefly consulted his financial interface on his HUD before turning away from the window.

[ACCOUNT BALANCE: 385,420 CREDITS]

Recent Transactions:

Annual Lease (Secured S-7 Apartment): -120,000 Cr

'Vex' Protection Contract (Retainer): -50,000 Cr

Medical Equipment & Stabilizers: -40,000 Cr

Bribe (Ghost Identity Registration): -4,580 Cr

It was a fortune for a dweller of the lower zones, but in the upper sectors, it was barely enough to buy a high-end cybernetic arm. To Kael, every remaining credit represented another second of life for his sister.

"Kael?"

A weak, small voice cracked the silence. Kael turned instantly. Elara was sitting up, propped against a pile of pillows. Her eyes, once clouded by the nanite infection, were clear. The faint blue glow of the Apex-7 heart was visible through the thin fabric of her gown, a steady, mechanical pulse.

"I'm here, Elara," Kael said, his voice softening in a way he never permitted on the streets. He sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand. It was warm.

"The doctor said... you did it. You found the heart," she whispered. "But you look different. Your eyes... they glow sometimes."

Kael forced a smile. "Just some new gear, Elara. The city is changing, and I have to change with it."

"Where are we? This isn't the clinic."

"It's home. A real one," Kael replied, gesturing to the city lights outside. "No leaks, no scavengers. I've paid for the security for the year."

Elara knew Neo-Astra too well to believe in the honesty of such luxury. "What did you do, Kael? What did you give them for all this?"

Kael remained silent. He couldn't tell her about the Chronicle of the First Code, or the man in white who claimed to own his future.

"I made a delivery," he said finally. "A very important one."

He stood up, his heart heavy. "Elara, I have to go away for a while. The people I... worked with, they aren't happy that I left. If I stay here, I'm a target. I won't bring that danger to your door."

Fear flashed in Elara's eyes. "No, don't go!"

"Listen to me," Kael said. "You won't be alone. Vex is going to stay here. She's the one who helped me save you. She's... the most dangerous person I know, and she's on our side."

As if on cue, the door slid open. Vex stepped in, stripped of her tactical gear and wearing a simple dark jacket. She looked less like an assassin and more like a high-end bodyguard. She nodded to Elara, her gaze surprisingly soft.

"Perimeter sensors are live," Vex reported. "The apartment is off the grid. As long as she stays inside, the Guild's scanners won't find her."

Kael fixed his gaze on Vex. "Why are you doing this? You could sell me out to Aurelius and make ten times what I'm paying you."

Vex leaned against the doorframe. "Aurelius doesn't pay his debts, Kael. He 'rewrites' his creditors. You, on the other hand, are a chaos the System didn't predict. In this city, chaos is the only thing I still have faith in. And besides..." She glanced at Elara. "I had a sister once, too. Before Sector 3 was 'cleansed.' Don't make me regret my choice."

Kael nodded. He handed Elara a small metallic pendant—an emergency beacon. "If you're ever scared, if the lights flicker three times, press this. I'll come back. No matter who is hunting me."

"Promise?" she asked.

"I promise."

He kissed her forehead and turned to Vex. The softness vanished, replaced by the cold, calculating mask of the Night Rider.

"If anything happens to her, Vex... all the Luck in the world won't save you from me."

"I know, rookie," Vex replied. "Now get out of here. You have a book to read and a city to burn. I'll handle the home front."

Kael walked out without looking back. As the elevator descended toward the lower levels, he pulled the book from his bag. It felt heavier now.

[SYSTEM ALERT: NEW SUB-QUEST REVEALED]

[OBJECTIVE: DECIPHER THE FIRST PAGE]

[LOCATION REQUIRED: THE ARCHIVES OF SILENCE - SECTOR 3]

Kael adjusted his hood. The rain of Sector 7 felt cleaner, but the shadows were just as deep. He had secured his sister's life; it was time to take back his own.
