Chapter 23 - CHP 23 The Hidden Flame

CHP 23 The Hidden Flame

Wang San woke to the sound of wind rushing through the pines.

His head pounded, but the ache vanished when he saw the scene before him.

Wang Xiao knelt in the center of the shrine, her cloak spread around her like spilled ink. In her hands, a small ember floated — not fire, not light, but something alive. It pulsed softly, beating like a second heart.

San tried to sit up. "What… what is that?"

"Stay down," she said without turning. Her voice was steady, almost cold.

He noticed now that a shallow stone basin lay between them, filled with shimmering water. Inside it, something was taking shape — a faint, fragile light, twisting into form.

"My brother's… core?" he whispered.

She didn't answer, but her hands moved in slow, deliberate circles above the water. The ember's light grew, streaks of gold and crimson rippling through it like the feathers of a bird.

The air grew hot, though no flames touched him. A distant cry echoed in the mist — sharp, powerful, and ancient.

San's eyes widened. "That sound… a phoenix—"

The glow around her flared suddenly, blinding him. When the light faded, she was slumped forward, breathing hard, the ember gone from her hands.

The water in the basin shimmered with a small sphere of pure light — pulsing gently.

"This," she said quietly, "is all I could restore. Take it to him before it fades."

San hesitated. "Who… who are you, really?"

She pulled her hood lower. "Just a fool who knows a little too much."

But as he reached for the sphere, he swore he saw the reflection of wings in the water — vast, crimson, and crowned with fire.
