Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Blood Duel

The arena beneath the Crimson Spire was a colossal circular pit carved from black obsidian, its walls etched with ancient runes that glowed blood-red. High above, the Council sat in a raised viewing gallery, their thrones arranged in a semicircle. Torches burned with unnatural crimson flames, casting flickering shadows that danced like hungry spirits.

Thousands of vampires — nobles, warriors, and spies from every clan — filled the surrounding stands. The air was thick with anticipation and the metallic scent of impending violence.

At the center of the arena stood a ritual circle of pulsing runes. Inside it, bound by shimmering crimson chains of magic, stood Lín Xuěyáo. She wore a simple white gown, her long raven hair loose, the bond thread glowing faintly between her and Yè Júnhào. Her blue eyes were steady, but her heart raced.

Yè Júnhào stood opposite her, just outside the circle, dressed only in loose black trousers and bare-chested, his powerful frame marked with faint silver scars from the Rite. His stormy eyes never left her.

Vesperian, leader of the Shadowfang Clan, entered from the opposite side.

He was tall and gaunt, silver-streaked black hair falling to his shoulders, his eyes glowing like fresh blood. Dark tattoos of shadow runes crawled across his pale skin. A cruel smile twisted his lips as he looked at Xuěyáo.

"So this is the scented prize," he drawled, voice carrying across the arena. "How delightful. When I win, I will enjoy breaking her slowly… and making you watch every second, Júnhào."

Yè Júnhào's fangs descended fully, a low, lethal growl rumbling in his chest. Dark crimson energy crackled around his fists.

Elder Vorath rose from his throne, staff raised.

"The Blood Duel begins! Yè Júnhào versus Vesperian of the Shadowfang. The prize is the human Lín Xuěyáo. Fight until one submits or is destroyed. Begin!"

The moment the word left his mouth, Vesperian attacked.

He blurred forward in a wave of black smoke and shadow claws, faster than any ordinary vampire. Yè Júnhào met him head-on, their collision sending a shockwave through the arena that cracked the obsidian floor.

Claws slashed. Fangs snapped. The two ancient vampires moved in a deadly blur of speed and power. Vesperian fought with vicious cunning, using forbidden shadow magic to create illusory copies of himself that struck from blind angles.

Yè Júnhào was pure, controlled fury. Every strike was precise, every dodge calculated. He drew on the bond — feeling Xuěyáo's strength flowing into him, steadying his rage, sharpening his focus.

From within the ritual circle, Xuěyáo watched with clenched fists. She could feel his pain through the bond whenever Vesperian landed a blow. A deep gash opened across Yè Júnhào's chest, black blood dripping. She gasped, but sent a surge of her own will through the glowing thread.

*Stay strong. I'm with you.*

Yè Júnhào roared and countered with a brutal uppercut that sent Vesperian flying into the arena wall. Stone shattered on impact.

The crowd roared.

Vesperian rose, laughing maniacally, shadows writhing around him. "You fight for love? How pathetic! Let me show you true power!"

He raised both hands. Dark tendrils of shadow magic shot toward the ritual circle, wrapping around Xuěyáo's chains and tightening painfully. She cried out as the magic squeezed her ribs, forcing her to her knees.

Yè Júnhào's eyes blazed pure crimson. "Do not touch her!"

He charged with renewed ferocity, but Vesperian used the distraction to slash deep across his side, drawing more blood.

Through the bond, Xuěyáo felt his agony. Instead of panicking, she focused. The power awakened by the Rite surged within her. She breathed as he had taught her, channeling her will through the glowing thread.

The crimson chains around her flickered.

She pushed harder.

With a sharp crack, one chain shattered.

The Council gasped.

Xuěyáo rose to her feet inside the circle, eyes glowing with faint crimson light. She sent a massive surge of strength and calm through the bond.

*Fight for us. Not with rage — with purpose.*

Yè Júnhào felt it instantly. The bond amplified her courage, steadying his mind. His movements became faster, more fluid. He dodged Vesperian's next attack with unnatural grace, then countered with a devastating series of strikes.

Claw met claw. Fangs flashed.

In a final, explosive clash, Yè Júnhào grabbed Vesperian by the throat, slamming him to the ground with bone-crushing force. His free hand plunged into the Shadowfang leader's chest, claws closing around his still-beating heart.

"Yield," Yè Júnhào snarled, voice echoing through the arena.

Vesperian choked out a laugh, blood bubbling from his lips. "Never… she will be mine—"

Yè Júnhào tore the heart free in one brutal motion.

Vesperian's body convulsed, then dissolved into black ash that scattered across the obsidian floor.

Silence fell over the arena.

Then the crowd erupted — some cheering, others shouting in disbelief.

Yè Júnhào stood panting, covered in blood, his wounds already beginning to heal. He turned immediately to the ritual circle.

With a roar of raw power, he shattered the remaining crimson chains binding Xuěyáo. She ran to him, throwing herself into his arms. He caught her, lifting her off the ground and crushing her against his chest in front of the entire arena.

The bond thread between them flared bright crimson and gold, visible to everyone.

"You did it," she whispered against his neck, tears of relief streaming down her face. "We did it."

He buried his face in her hair, holding her as if she were the only thing keeping him sane. "I will always fight for you. Always."

From the viewing gallery, Elder Vorath watched with a grim expression. Lady Seraphine smiled with open delight. The Twin Shadows whispered excitedly.

The Shadowfang Clan's remaining members bowed their heads in defeat, forced to accept the outcome.

The Blood Duel was over.

Yè Júnhào had won.

But as he carried Xuěyáo out of the arena, still wrapped in his arms, neither of them missed the dark glances from several Council members.

The victory was sweet.

Yet the war was far from finished.

The Council's fear had only grown.

And somewhere in the shadows, new enemies were already plotting their next move.

For now, though, in the arms of the ancient vampire who had bled for her, Lín Xuěyáo felt safe.

The prey had helped slay the hunter's greatest rival.

And their bond had never burned brighter.
