Chapter 1 - Prologue

My life has not been an easy one. I have been betrayed and manipulated. I have had a purpose and a drive, and then lost it. I've believed in a greater purpose of my faith only to lose it all. But when I was at the lowest point in my life, sitting inside a cage, body bloody and broken, having lost all hope and my family, the most unimaginable thing happened in my life.

I still can't figure out what power my saviour had used. It looked like the aura wielded by weapon users, but at the same time it looked like the mana used by Mages. But it was neither demonic nor was it holy powers, of that I am sure. It does not matter either way to me.

Her gaze was one that could make even assassins like me be afraid of. It was the gaze of an apex predator.

"Are you going to throw away your life in vain? Are you going to let your wife's death be in vain?" Was what was asked to me by her. Her hair white as snow, and the blood on her face added to the chill sent down my spine by her steel gaze.

She looked ethereal in the moonlight as she stood above a mountain of corpses holding the little child in her hands that would help me see the good in this dark world.

Every oath I have ever sworn was broken—until the night I was given that child to protect.

Astrid may not be my own son, but I love him like I would've loved my own. I think if my wife had not bid goodbye to dear life, she too would've adored the boy.

"Take this child and protect him with your life. That is what you must do to repay this debt you owe me for saving your life." I, Gerald Vinston, have never been so grateful in my life to have uttered the words "yes" to a proposal ever like this before.
