Chapter 76 - Taking Over Root’s Remnants — The Fake-Smiling Boy, Sai

Outside Konoha Village.

In front of an extremely hidden canyon fissure.

Wumm—

The air trembled.

Amid the ripples, a figure slowly emerged.

"So this is Root's old nest? Why is it out here? Could this be the real Root organization?"

He was somewhat surprised. If he remembered correctly, he'd seen Root facilities inside the village just a few days ago.

"That old bastard Danzō really did know the wisdom of the cunning rabbit with three burrows."

Thinking this, he raised his head to look ahead.

On both sides were jagged, precipitous black rock walls, as if split apart by a giant axe.

Moonlight fell from above, yet only the thinnest slivers managed to seep in.

The place felt all the more eerie and lifeless.

Ahead, the entrance was narrow—barely wide enough for one person to squeeze through.

But if one turned sideways, it would be easy to pass.

"This entrance…"

He activated his Sharingan and Byakugan simultaneously, looking forward once more.

The once-dead cavern mouth now appeared entirely different—

layers upon layers of chakra barriers, nearly invisible to the naked eye, were spread over the entrance like spiderwebs!

Above them, complex sealing runes flowed slowly.

And in the air at the entrance, there lingered a faint, filtered stench of decay.

"A sewer rat's nest."

Jin commented flatly.

Then he stepped straight toward the seemingly empty fissure.

Wumm—

The instant he entered the barrier's range, the runes suddenly flared with dazzling red light!

Invisible energy walls surged toward him like a high-voltage grid, compressing and slicing!

Sizzle sizzle sizzle—

Feeling the terrifying force scraping against his skin, Jin couldn't help muttering,

"This could probably shred a Kakashi instantly, right?"

No wonder the Third Hokage, even knowing Danzō was dead, hadn't bothered to loot this place.

Turns out he knew full well how hard it was to get inside.

Shaking his head, Jin directly activated Light's Golden Body.

Pop—

In an instant, moonlight scattered.

His entire form was once again wrapped in brilliant, jade-like radiance.

Though he seemed to be standing in place, he had already transformed into light.

Pshk!

The red light that had been cutting into him passed straight through.

Without the slightest obstruction.

It didn't even trigger an alarm.

His steps didn't slow in the least. Soon, his entire body slipped into the narrow fissure and vanished.

Only a few strands of lingering moonlight remained at the entrance.

Drip.

Drip.

Inside the cave.

Jagged stalactites lined the ceiling.

From time to time, pale liquid dripped down.

Ahead lay a rough tunnel, sloping downward, clearly carved by human hands.

The air was damp and cold.

Jin took a light breath. The air was thick with the smell of earth—and the scent of disinfectant from his previous life.

"Came to the right place."

Catching that smell, the light in Jin's eyes grew even brighter.

Disinfectant meant organs.

Hm? Organs?!

Crunch.

His steps abruptly halted.

"System… does touching organs count as touching corpses?"

System: ...

After waiting a moment with no response, Jin smacked his lips and continued forward—

only slightly faster now.

Boom—pshk.

Underfoot, he unknowingly stepped onto a triggered explosive tag trap.

But the instant flames ignited, they were swallowed by a vortex and sent away.

Kamui—transfer.

Explosions were fine.

Just go explode in Obito's space.

Whoosh whoosh whoosh!

As he continued forward, poisoned senbon suddenly shot out from the surrounding walls.

Jin said nothing—he simply activated Kamui again.

Whoosh whoosh whoosh!

Hundreds, even thousands of senbon vanished into Kamui space.

Soon, he reached the end of the passage.

Blocking his way was a thick metal door, covered in sealing runes.

He narrowed his eyes slightly, veins bulging at his temples.

The dents and wear on the door became glaringly obvious in his vision.

Very quickly, he identified several critical rune nodes.

A light press.

The door opened.

Huff—

From within rushed a stench so strong it was almost choking—disinfectant mixed with a sickening, indescribable salty-sweet odor.

Instantly overwhelming.

Jin frowned, silently circulating chakra in front of his face—

like forming a mask.

After blocking out the stench, he stepped inside.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

His shoes echoed crisply against the stone floor.

In this environment, the sound reverberated endlessly.

Beyond the door lay a massive underground space—one that made the heart go cold.

Under harsh white lights, rows upon rows of enormous cylindrical glass cultivation tanks lined the area.

Within pale green nutrient fluid soaked all kinds of horrifying "specimens."

Crimson Sharingan—ripped from their sockets—floated in special solutions!

Their tomoe patterns were clearly visible!

Pale, writhing chunks of flesh—forcefully segmented and cultivated!

There was even… a pair of Byakugan, soaking in a jar in the corner!

Deathly silence.

Only the occasional rising bubble in the tanks broke it—

glub.

"Really living up to Orochimaru's stereotype."

Jin raised an eyebrow inwardly.

A mad scientist—

and one utterly without limits.

Slowly, his gaze shifted to the deepest part of the laboratory.

In an inconspicuous corner stood two small iron cages, placed side by side.

Inside one cage, a white-haired boy was curled up.

He looked even younger than Naruto, his eyes hollow and numb, like a soulless porcelain doll.

Dried blood had already crusted over his abdomen.

Life or death—unknown.

In the other cage was a black-haired, pale-skinned boy about Naruto's age.

He was clutching a worn, battered drawing board tightly to his chest, his fingers white from the strain.

His body trembled slightly.

When he noticed Jin's gaze, he shrank back like a startled rabbit.

Then he glanced at the white-haired boy beside him and subconsciously curved his eyes into a gentle smile.

His lips moved.

"Are you… a new test subject?"

His voice was dry and hoarse. Even though he tried his best to control it,

the trembling fear was unmistakable.

This fake-smiling boy was afraid.

Jin's eyes lingered for a moment on the drawing board clutched in the black-haired boy's arms.

He didn't answer the question.

Instead, he asked, "Your name?"

His voice wasn't loud, yet it echoed clearly through the space.

Thump.

The black-haired boy shuddered again, but still forced himself to answer in a low voice.

"He… is called Shin… I—I'm Sai…"

As expected.

The brothers.

In the original story, it was never clear when Danzō fully turned Sai into a machine—

but it clearly wasn't yet.

Jin tilted his head back slightly, pondering for a moment before speaking softly,

"Do you want to live?"

His tone remained flat, devoid of emotion.

"I do!"

But this time, something different burst into Sai's eyes.

Live.

Live on!

Almost instinctively, he shouted the word.

In his hollow gaze, a faint yet incredibly intense light of survival ignited!

He wanted to live!

Under this emotional surge, even the white-haired boy beside him seemed stirred.

His lifeless body showed the slightest rise and fall.

Almost imperceptible—

but Jin saw it clearly.

"If you want to live, then from now on—"

"you belong to the Uchiha."

Crack! Crack!

As his words fell, two golden chains shot from his sleeves without warning!

Like agile serpents, they precisely shredded the sturdy iron cage bars!

The sealing runes above were utterly meaningless before the Vajra Chains.

Step. Step. Step.

Jin walked over just like that.

One step at a time, clearly audible.

When he drew close, his left eye turned slightly.

The massive "666" shimmered faintly into view.

The unique domain of Three Feet Before Me rippled once more.

A force imbued with unique vitality enveloped Sai and the white-haired boy beside him.

Healing others—

he could do that too.

"Roar—!"

But just at that moment—

inside a massive cultivation tank across the room, a sudden mutation erupted!
