This battle was, without question, the final reckoning between Chiba and Hiruzen Sarutobi.
Chiba had prepared for this moment for a long time - long enough that even hatred had learned to sit quietly in his chest, waiting. Over the years, what existed between them had stopped being a simple feud. It had become a constant pressure beneath every decision, every confrontation in the shadows, every public move that carried an unseen blade. Too many grudges, too many calculated clashes, too many things left unresolved. Now, at last, it was time to end it.
All of Konoha was holding its breath for the outcome. People didn't say it out loud, but everyone understood what was at stake. If Chiba lost, life would simply snap back into a familiar shape - Hiruzen's rule again, the old order restored like a wound stitched shut. But if Hiruzen fell…
Then perhaps the village would have to accept something far more frightening than defeat: the reality of living under Chiba's shadow. And yet, in the silent corners of people's minds, the question kept surfacing - uninvited, uncomfortable, impossible to ignore.
Would that truly be the worst outcome?
Fairness lived in human hearts, not in speeches. And deep down, many were already weighing the two men, measuring what they had seen against what they had endured.
Just as the decisive clash between Chiba and Hiruzen hovered on the edge of eruption, another front of the war ignited elsewhere.
On a separate route, the Kumogakure ninja army ran headlong into the Sound forces - an army personally led by Orochimaru and Tsunade. This was by Chiba's design. He had ordered the two of them to command the Sound shinobi and halt Kumo's advance, buying time through sheer pressure and calculated resistance rather than suicidal annihilation.
And Chiba hadn't stopped there.
He had also handed Orochimaru authority over part of the Ryūchi Cave summon population - serpents, vast and cold-blooded, a living tide of fangs and coils. With the Sound army reinforced by the snakes of Ryūchi Cave, they could hold Kumogakure at bay for a while. As for the upper-tier fighters… Orochimaru and Tsunade were not inferior to Kumo's strongest. Not even close.
Besides, Chiba's order was clear: stall them. Nothing more.
The Yondaime Raikage spotted the two figures standing at the head of the opposing formation. His gaze locked onto Orochimaru - and the moment it did, his restraint shattered like glass.
"Orochimaru!!!"
His voice tore across the battlefield, thick with rage that had been fermenting for years.
"You bastard… back then, you were the one pulling strings in the dark! You caused our previous Hachibi Jinchūriki, Blue B, to go berserk inside the village - Kumogakure suffered massive losses because of you! Today, I'm settling that debt with you properly!!!"
Orochimaru's lips curled into a low, amused smile, as if the Raikage's fury was nothing more than an entertaining sound. "Raikage-sama," he replied smoothly, "at the time, I was still a shinobi of Konoha. And if I recall correctly, Kumogakure had invaded us more than once before that. What I did was simply serving my own side - nothing more, nothing less."
Tsunade's eyes narrowed, her expression sharpening with contempt. "He's right," she cut in. "And what you're doing now - leading your army to invade Konoha - how is that any different from what Orochimaru did back then? Letting the Hachibi go on a rampage is 'evil,' but you marching into another village with an army is 'justice'?!"
The Yondaime Raikage froze for a fraction of a second - just long enough for the words to land - then his anger surged again.
"It was you who invaded Konoha and drove out the rightful Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi! I'm answering his call for aid - helping him reclaim the village! That's not the same thing!"
Tsunade laughed, loud and merciless. "Oh? Then when the Kazekage went missing and Kumogakure invaded Sunagakure, was that also to 'help' them find their Kazekage?"
For a moment, the Raikage had no answer.
A nation that worshiped strength and conflict didn't always have clean banners to hide behind. Trying to justify every invasion with a noble reason was impossible when you'd done it too many times.
He finally snorted, voice turning hard as stone. "I don't care about your words. This battle is happening no matter what!"
His eyes swept over them, disdain and confidence mixing into something sharp.
"Orochimaru. Tsunade. I know you're two of the Legendary Sannin, strong enough to shake nations. But just the two of you - and the trash behind you from Otogakure - you think you can stop the Kumogakure army?! I advise you to surrender early!"
Orochimaru sighed lightly, almost regretful. "Then there's nothing to be done."
In a sudden motion, he bit into his fingers, blood blooming across his hands - cold, deliberate, practiced.
Kuchiyose no Jutsu ("Summoning Technique")!
The earth seemed to respond instantly.
BOOOOM - !
BOOOOM - !
BOOOOOOM - !!!
A thunderous chain of impacts rolled across the battlefield as countless Ryūchi Cave serpents erupted into existence, their massive bodies slamming down like living siege engines. They poured forward in a writhing flood, fanning out and surging toward Kumo's ranks - coils crushing the ground, mouths opening to reveal rows of glistening fangs, the air filling with hissing that sounded like blades drawn in unison.
The Yondaime Raikage's eyes widened - but only for an instant. He reacted immediately, barking commands as he led his shinobi forward, Kumo's formation charging into the oncoming mass. At the same time, Tsunade drove the Sound forces onward, her presence turning their line from scattered hostility into a coordinated counterstrike.
Steel flashed. Jutsu detonated. Snakes crashed into bodies and armor. The front line collapsed into chaos as both armies slammed together, the battlefield becoming a grinding knot of violence where every second was paid for in blood, broken earth, and screaming chakra.
On the other side…
Hiruzen Sarutobi, backed by Sunagakure's main force, charged directly at Chiba.
War erupted fully here as well.
Chiba stood alone against an ocean of enemies - and yet there wasn't even the slightest tremor of panic in him. If anything, he looked… calm. Too calm. The kind of stillness that made people uneasy, because it didn't come from courage - it came from certainty.
The corner of his mouth lifted faintly, and then his chakra surged outward, vast and heavy, like a glacier shifting beneath the sea.
Ice Age!
It was a simple attack in concept - plain, direct, almost brutally honest. But what came next was anything but ordinary.
A violent wave of extreme cold exploded from Chiba's body, roaring across the battlefield like a living storm. The air screamed as it crystallized. Frost devoured sound. The ground whitened in a heartbeat, and then hardened - ice spreading outward in a relentless tide.
BOOOOM - !
BOOOOM - !
BOOOOOOM - !!!
In an instant, it was as if the world had been rewritten into winter. The earth sealed under a thick, merciless layer of ice. The sky itself felt frozen, heavy, suffocating. Wherever that freezing breath passed, everything died into silence - metal stiffening, limbs locking, moisture in the air turning into sharp crystals that cut at the lungs.
The Sunagakure ninja army at the front took the hit first.
So many of them were frozen solid that it was impossible to count - bodies halted mid-stride, weapons trapped in rigid hands, faces locked in expressions of shock and terror, sealed inside clear ice like insects in amber.
But Sunagakure had not come unprepared.
Their hatred, after all, had a target - Chiba, and by extension the Hidden Mist that had once drowned them in blood and humiliation. For years, Sunagakure had studied him. They had hunted answers. They had searched for methods to resist his Ice Release, and even ways to counter the Water Release the Mist excelled in.
This battle didn't include Kirigakure's army - but the solution remained the same.
Fire.
The problem was that Sunagakure didn't have large numbers of skilled Fire Release shinobi. What they did have in abundance were Wind Release users - shinobi who could turn a spark into an inferno.
So they created a dedicated Fire Release unit, gathering their limited Fire Release experts into a structured formation designed specifically to break through Chiba's ice. And beyond that, they stockpiled massive quantities of oil - fuel meant to turn heat into a weapon of overwhelming scale.
At Rasa's command, the Fire Release unit erupted with chakra.
Katon: Endan ("Flame Bullet")!
Katon: Karyū Endan ("Fire Dragon Flame Bullet")!
Flames burst forth in a sweeping barrage, not as scattered attacks but as a coordinated wall - fire blooming into a raging sea, swallowing the frozen battlefield in harsh orange light. At the same time, another unit surged forward to spray and hurl highly flammable oil across the ground and into the air. The oil caught instantly, and the battlefield transformed into a burning hellscape - rolling firestorms and blazing pools that radiated suffocating heat, the air warping above them as if reality itself was melting.
And they weren't finished.
Rasa raised his hand again, and the Wind Release shinobi responded as one, pouring chakra into the atmosphere until the very air became a weapon.
Fūton: Kakeami ("Hanging Net")!
Fūton: Dai Kakeami ("Great Hanging Net")!
Fūton: Kiryū Ranbu ("Airflow Chaotic Dance")!
Gales erupted across the battlefield, gathering into violent cyclones that lashed the flames and drove the burning oil forward. The fire's power multiplied - tenfold, a hundredfold - pressed onward in a roaring counterattack meant to overwhelm Chiba's frozen domain through sheer scale and pressure.
BOOOOM - !
BOOOOM - !
BOOOOOOM - !!!
The combined force of Sunagakure's elite - Fire Release, Wind Release, and oil woven together - became something monstrous. In raw scope and range, it surpassed even the infamous Sage Art firestorm created by Jiraiya and the two Great Toad Sages. Its quality may not have matched true senjutsu… but its mass and coverage were beyond it.
Because this wasn't a single shinobi's technique.
It was the will of a major village - an entire army compressing its strength into one crushing wave.
And then Hiruzen moved.
His chakra surged, deeper and heavier than the rest, carrying the weight of decades spent at the pinnacle of the shinobi world. His hands formed seals with the precision of a man who had done so a thousand times, and his voice cut through the inferno like an executioner's decree.
Katon: Gōen no Jutsu ("Great Flame Technique")!
The power behind it was on a different level entirely - something no ordinary Sunagakure shinobi could hope to replicate.
Rasa, the Kazekage, unleashed his own Wind Release at last, the air around him tightening like a drawn bowstring as chakra poured into the battlefield with ruthless intent.
Fūton: Daitoppa Kamaitachi ("Great Scythe Weasel Technique")!!!!
In that instant, everything converged - Hiruzen Sarutobi's jutsu, Rasa's assault, and the combined force of Sunagakure's ninja army merging into a single, crushing counterattack aimed at Chiba alone. Fire surged, oil ignited, gale-force winds screamed through the flames, and a suffocating heatwave rolled forward like the breath of a furnace. For the first time since Chiba's Hyōga no Jidai ("Ice Age") had swept the field, its relentless spread was actually slowed, forced to hesitate beneath the sheer violence of opposing elements.
Water vapor erupted upward in a wild, roaring bloom, rising so violently it swallowed the battlefield in thick, churning fog. Visibility collapsed into a gray-white world of heat and mist - yet even through that veil, the consequences were clear. Under the collision of terrifying power, Sunagakure shinobi were still being crushed, torn apart, burned, frozen - maimed and killed in numbers no one could properly count.
Watching it all, Chiba let out a quiet, almost approving smile.
"So Sunagakure isn't completely foolish," he said, voice calm and faintly amused. "At least you know to scheme and struggle when it comes to countering my freezing… though it's a pity."
His gaze sharpened - not with anger, but with certainty.
"It doesn't mean anything."
At that command-like moment, Rasa barked another order. The Wind Release unit surged again, their jutsu whipping through the battlefield like blades, tearing open lanes in the fog and scattering the burning oil-sea and steam haze. The world cleared just enough for Chiba's figure to reappear, standing there as though he hadn't moved an inch - an unshaken silhouette carved out of cold.
Rasa's mouth curled into a cold smile. "Well, Chiba? This is the strategy Sunagakure prepared for you - this is how we wash away our humiliation!"
Chiba nodded lightly, as if acknowledging a decent performance from an inferior opponent. "Not bad. You are one of the Five Great Nations, after all."
Then his tone dipped, sharper than the edge of a blade.
"Even if you're at the very bottom… there's still a little foundation left."
Hiruzen's eyes burned with hostility as he stepped forward, his voice dropping into a lethal growl. "Chiba, today it's either you die or I do!"
"I want to see how you plan to fight an entire army by yourself - no, two armies! A joint force of two great nations!!!"
Chiba smiled again - warmer than it had any right to be, almost pitying. "Hiruzen Sarutobi… you're not even as good as Rasa. At least he learns."
His gaze held the old Hokage in place, as if the chaos around them didn't matter.
"And who said I'm alone?"
The next second, his chakra snapped outward like an unsealed calamity.
Kuchiyose no Jutsu ("Summoning Technique")!!!
The earth shook.
A vast majority of the Ryūchi Cave serpent host erupted onto the battlefield once more - far more than what Orochimaru had brought. Orochimaru's side had only been given a small portion: Manda, the Second Manda, the Blue Snake, along with two Ryūchi Cave elders, Tagitsuhime and Ichikishimahime, supported by countless snakes large and small.
But what Chiba summoned now was the main body.
The White Snake Sage herself emerged in full presence, along with the elder Tagitsuhime, and the most fearsome among the great serpents - Sage Snake, whose aura alone made seasoned shinobi feel their throats go dry. The scale of the serpent army here dwarfed the chaos on Orochimaru's front; coils as thick as pillars rolled over the ground, countless bodies sliding forward in a living tide, their numbers and mass pressing down on the battlefield like a nightmare made physical.
In a heartbeat, the White Snake Sage, Tagitsuhime, and Sage Snake each led their own division of Ryūchi Cave serpents and crashed into Sunagakure's ranks, turning the battlefield into a grinding slaughter.
And then Chiba raised his hand again, as if that still wasn't enough.
His chakra shifted - deeper, colder, carrying a strange and ancient texture, the mark of senjutsu woven into ice.
Senpō: Hyōton - Hyōsetsu Ryūkishi ("Sage Art: Ice Release - Ice-Snow Dragon Knights")!
Hundreds of ice-forged dragon riders manifested at once - glittering cavalry formed from compressed frost and refined killing intent. They charged into the warzone in a gleaming storm, weapons raised, mounts thundering over frozen ground, their presence turning the battle into something mythic and terrifyingly real.
In an instant, the melee became total.
Ryūchi Cave serpents and the Ice-Snow Dragon Knights tore into Sunagakure's forces, and Sunagakure - elite shinobi hardened by hatred and preparation - answered with everything they had. Steel rang. jutsu detonated. sand and blood sprayed across ice. The battlefield turned into a brutal, breathless grind where every step was taken over shattered ground and broken bodies.
Rasa threw himself into the White Snake Sage's assault with desperate resolve, forcing his Magnet Release: Gold Dust to its limits. Over the years, he had amassed strength again; the volume of gold sand had returned, and its density and control felt even more oppressive than before.
Elsewhere, Granny Chiyo collided head-on with the Ryūchi Cave elder Tagitsuhime, their fight becoming a fierce knot of precision and experience - two monsters of an older era trading blows where a single mistake meant death.
Baki, Yura, and the others engaged Sage Snake, two-headed serpents, three-headed serpents, and more of the Ryūchi Cave elite, their struggle a savage dance of survival against creatures that did not tire, did not hesitate, and did not fear.
All around them, Sunagakure's best clashed with serpents and dragon knights in a decisive battle that felt less like war and more like the world collapsing into predation.
And through all of it, Hiruzen Sarutobi moved straight toward Chiba.
The two of them walked forward through the chaos as if the battlefield had peeled away, as if the screams and explosions were distant thunder belonging to someone else. The air between them tightened. Everything else became irrelevant.
Only the enemy in front of them mattered.
In Hiruzen's eyes, hatred ran deeper than the sea - old resentment, disgust, and fury burning so fiercely it made his gaze look almost feral. But Chiba was different. He looked… composed. Not indifferent, not careless - simply calm, as though he was finally completing something he'd prepared long ago, a task postponed only by circumstance.
Hiruzen's voice turned icy. "Chiba. The grudges between us end today!"
"In this battle, I will reclaim Konoha and reclaim the seat of Hokage - or I will be buried on this battlefield!"
Chiba's smile sharpened. "Then save everyone the trouble."
Hiruzen's restraint snapped.
With a furious roar, he surged forward, chakra erupting as he launched his assault at full force.
Katon: Karyū Enban ("Flame Dragon Fire Bullet")!!!!
This was Hiruzen's strongest Fire Release - flames exploding outward like a raging dragon, violent and alive, twisting through the air with savage momentum. The blaze split into multiple streams, surging from the front and sweeping from both sides, each trajectory guided by chakra control to trap and incinerate its target. It was fast, aggressive, and difficult to evade - an attack designed to erase an opponent in a single breath.
Hiruzen Sarutobi's talent was real. A shinobi capable of mastering over a thousand techniques - commanding all five nature transformations - was rare even in the entire history of the ninja world. Yet the flaw had always remained: breadth over depth. He could wield countless jutsu, but few that carried the unmistakable weight of a singular, absolute killing move.
Against the oncoming flame dragon, Chiba didn't even blink.
He lifted his right hand and flicked it forward.
A beam of extreme cold shot out instantly - pure, compressed freezing intent - slamming into the Fire Release head-on.
The collision ended almost before it began. The roaring dragon of flame vanished as if strangled by winter itself, smothered, extinguished, and sealed away under a sheath of ice until nothing remained but drifting frost and silence.
Hiruzen hadn't expected that jutsu to kill Chiba.
It had never been the point.
It was only the opening movement - space created for what came next.
Kuchiyose no Jutsu ("Summoning Technique")!!!
"Come forth - Monkey King Enma!!!"
A sharp pop cracked through the air. White smoke burst outward, and from it emerged a massive white-furred monkey, standing with the weight of an ancient guardian.
Monkey King Enma.
Hiruzen's strongest summon.
Enma took one look at the battlefield - the serpents, the ice cavalry, the burning remnants of oil and flame - and let out a weary sigh. "As usual… whenever you summon me, it's never for anything good, Hiruzen."
Hiruzen snorted. "This isn't the time for complaints."
"This battle is life and death between me and him."
His eyes narrowed.
"Enma - become the Adamantine Staff."
"…Fine."
In the next breath -
BANG!!!!
Enma transformed, his body snapping into the form of a Kongō Nyoi ("Adamantine Staff"), an unbreakable weapon with an adamantine body. Hiruzen seized it with both hands and swung in a brutal arc, the staff cutting the air so violently it erupted into roaring gusts, a pressure wave that chewed through fog and frost alike.
Chiba's smile returned, calm and unreadable. "So you chose that."
"Good."
His chakra surged. In his hand, an ice blade formed instantly - thin at first, then densifying into something unnaturally hard, unnaturally sharp, its surface gleaming with compressed cold. Senjutsu flowed through it, subtle but unmistakable, turning the weapon into more than frozen water - it became a refined killing edge.
Then Chiba stepped in.
He didn't retreat. He didn't test.
He attacked.
BOOM!!!!
The ice blade and the Adamantine Staff collided with a thunderous impact, shockwaves rippling through the air. Chiba's ice - compressed to an absurd degree - possessed unimaginable strength, hardness, and sharpness. And layered atop that was Ryūchi Cave senjutsu, making it even more brutal, even more oppressive. In every way, it already surpassed what should have been an unbeatable weapon.
And then there was Chiba himself.
His power wasn't merely technique - it was monstrous physical force, strengthened by Hashirama's cells, a terrifying might that turned his movements into disasters.
That strength erupted at once.
BOOOOOOM!!!!!
Hiruzen and the Adamantine Staff were blasted backward, launched like a broken figure across the battlefield. The impact alone sent his body tumbling through the air.
And Chiba's ice blade didn't stop.
It flashed across Hiruzen's arm.
SPLASH - !
Blood burst out in a violent spray. Hiruzen screamed, the sound raw and pained, as his body was hurled dozens of meters away, his mouth spitting thick waves of blood as he crashed down hard - an old Hokage suddenly looking terrifyingly mortal amid the ice and war.
