Chapter 12 - The Stranger’s Shadow

The morning light filtered through the curtains in Rowan's house, casting long shadows across the kitchen floor. The snow outside had stopped falling, but the air still felt cold and heavy, like the weight of secrets hanging over everyone. Holly Winters stood by the coffee maker, her hands shaking a little as she poured a cup. Her red hair was messy from a night of little sleep, and her green eyes were red from crying. The events of last night replayed in her mind like a bad dream—Anna's sudden arrival, the letter about her bipolar disorder, the miscarriage, the debts. And now, this new twist from Jack. A man waiting in a car outside? Who was he? Holly's heart raced with fear and confusion. She loved Rowan, but this mess with his ex-wife made everything feel unstable, like walking on thin ice.

Rowan sat at the table, holding Lily on his lap. The little girl ate her cereal quietly, sensing the tension in the room. Her blue eyes looked up at her dad, then at Anna, who sat across from them. Anna looked tired, her blonde hair pulled back, her face pale without makeup. She had spent the night in the guest room, crying alone, thinking about her past mistakes. From Anna's view, coming back was her last chance to fix things. She had hidden so much—the depression after Lily's birth, the manic highs that made her cheat, the lost baby with Mark. But now, with everything out, she felt exposed, like a raw nerve.

Jack stood by the door, his arms crossed. He was Holly's brother and Rowan's best friend, tall and strong like a hockey player. His brown hair was short, and his face showed worry. "I saw him when I drove up," Jack said again. "Black sedan, parked down the street. Guy inside looked nervous, kept checking his phone. Didn't recognize him."

Rowan set Lily down gently. "Stay here with Aunt Holly, okay sweetie?" Lily nodded and went to Holly, who hugged her tight. Holly's heart ached for the child caught in this adult drama. She whispered, "Want to color?" Lily smiled a little, and they moved to the living room.

In the kitchen, Rowan turned to Anna. His voice was low but firm. "Who's the man, Anna? You said you came alone."

Anna's eyes widened, fear flashing across her face. She twisted her hands in her lap, tears starting again. "I... I didn't come alone. Not exactly." Her voice shook, revealing more secrets she had kept buried. From her perspective, the man outside was part of her messy city life—a loose end she thought she could handle before facing Rowan.

"Explain," Rowan demanded, his blue eyes hard. Jack leaned against the counter, ready to support his friend.

Anna took a deep breath, her mind going back to Seattle. After Mark left her, broken and alone, she had spiraled. The bipolar diagnosis came during a hospital stay after a bad manic episode where she spent all her money on things she didn't need—clothes, trips, even a car she couldn't afford. Debts piled up, thousands of dollars in credit cards and loans. To survive, she worked odd jobs, but it wasn't enough. That's when she met Victor Ruiz, the man in the car.

"His name is Victor," Anna said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He's... a loan officer. From a company in Seattle. I owe money—a lot. After the miscarriage, I was depressed. Couldn't work. Borrowed to pay bills. But interest grew, and I couldn't keep up."

Rowan's face turned red with anger. "A loan shark? You brought a debt collector here?"

Anna shook her head quickly. "No, not like that. Victor's not bad. He's... he helped me. Drove me to the airport when I decided to come. Said he'd wait, make sure I was okay. He's worried about me."

Jack raised an eyebrow. "Worried? Or collecting?"

Anna's tears fell faster. "Both, maybe. But it's more. We... dated for a bit. After therapy, I tried to move on. Victor was kind, listened to my stories about you and Lily. But it didn't last. He knows I'm here to see my family. He came to support me."

Rowan stood up, pacing the room. His mind raced with emotions—betrayal again, mixed with pity for Anna's struggles. He thought of Holly, how she had been his light through all this. Now, another man from Anna's past? It hurt, stirring old jealousy. "You bring your ex-boyfriend to my door? While begging to see Lily?"

Anna stood too, her voice pleading. "He's not my ex like that. It was short. He's a friend now. Please, Rowan. I didn't want more drama. I just want to be part of Lily's life. The debts... I'll pay them. Victor can help arrange payments."

Jack pulled out his phone. "I'll go talk to him. See what's up."

Rowan nodded. "Be careful."

As Jack left, Holly came back to the kitchen, leaving Lily with her toys. She had heard most of it. Her heart felt heavy with sympathy for Anna's pain, but also anger. How many secrets did this woman have? Holly touched Rowan's arm. "You okay?"

He pulled her close, kissing her forehead. "With you, yes. But this... it's too much."

Anna watched them, a pang of jealousy in her chest. From her view, seeing Rowan with Holly was like looking at what her life could have been. Holly was everything she wasn't—cheerful, stable, good with Lily. Tears stung Anna's eyes. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "For everything."

Jack returned soon, with Victor in tow. Victor was in his mid-thirties, with short black hair, brown eyes, and a neat suit under his coat. He looked nervous but polite. "Mr. Kane? I'm Victor Ruiz. I didn't mean to intrude."

Rowan crossed his arms. "Why are you here?"

Victor glanced at Anna, his eyes soft with concern. "Anna told me about her past. Her illness, the regrets. When she said she was coming, I offered to drive her to the airport. But I worried—she's been fragile. Flew with her, rented the car. Just to make sure she's safe."

Anna nodded. "He's telling the truth. Victor helped me through therapy. He's a good man."

Holly felt a mix of relief and suspicion. Was Victor really just a friend? Or was there more? She saw the way he looked at Anna—with care, maybe love.

Rowan sighed, rubbing his temples. "Fine. But this is family business. You wait outside or at a hotel."

Victor agreed. "Understood. Anna, call if you need me." He left quietly.

The room fell silent. Lily wandered in, holding a drawing. "For Mommy," she said, handing it to Anna.

Anna knelt, tears flowing as she hugged Lily. "Thank you, baby. It's beautiful."

Rowan watched, his heart torn. He loved Holly, but seeing Anna with Lily stirred old feelings—not love, but sadness for what was lost. Holly saw it, her stomach twisting with insecurity. Did Rowan still care for Anna?

They spent the day talking. Anna shared more secrets. During her manic phases, she had gambled online, adding to debts. The miscarriage happened during a low— she hadn't taken care of herself. "I blamed myself," Anna said, sobbing. "Thought I didn't deserve to be a mom."

Holly listened, her empathy growing. "That's not true. But you hurt them."

Anna nodded. "I know. I want to make it right."

Rowan opened up too. "Your leaving broke me. I was angry, but scared. For Lily."

Tears filled the room again. Jack mediated, suggesting Anna stay a few days, supervised visits with Lily.

Holly and Rowan stepped outside for air. Snow crunched under their feet. "This is hard," Holly said, voice shaking.

Rowan held her. "I love you. Anna's past. You're my future."

They kissed, passionate, emotions raw. Holly felt his need, her own desire mixing with fear.

Inside, Lily laughed with Anna. But as evening came, Victor called Anna. "We need to talk. About the money... and us."

Anna's face paled. What did he mean by "us"?

That night, as everyone slept uneasily, Anna slipped out to meet Victor. In the car, he confessed, "I love you, Anna. Came to fight for you."

Anna's heart raced. Another secret—Victor's hidden feelings. What would she do?

Back in the house, Holly woke to an empty spot where Anna had been. Looking out the window, she saw the car, shadows talking inside. Her breath caught. Was Anna leaving again? Or bringing more trouble?

The night held its breath, secrets unfolding like dark petals, leaving everyone on the edge of breaking.
