Chapter 16 - Chapter 15: Becoming a God

The toads explained: if he wished to ascend to heaven, An Bao must sleep—truly fall asleep. As for becoming a god, it would depend on how much knowledge he had left behind in the mortal world.

In his current state, An Bao felt certain he couldn't sleep.

The toads told him not to worry. While he slept, emotional regulators would clear the thoughts from his cerebral cortex, and he would drift off before long. As for the knowledge he had left in the world, it had already been spread and solidified through his books and the children of the regulators.

That night, An Bao began to sleep. At first, he heard many voices murmuring—some saying, "Becoming a god is so easy, maybe I should try," others asking, "What about your mortal parents after you ascend?" Later, he heard sleep-talking from the next room. It was the voices of his earthly parents, shielding him:

"He was born to become a god; we couldn't have stopped him. He isn't here because he returned to serve in glory; if he stayed, there'd be nothing left for him here. We should be happy for him."

Their voices drove away the other noises.

Then, one voice stood out sharply—it aimed at every other voice and kept shouting repeatedly:

"Get away!"

It was, in fact, the emotional regulator who had seen An Bao taking his mother to the market. Finally, all the voices were completely silenced by that furious roar.

An Bao's cerebral cortex eased considerably. The world fell utterly quiet.

He gradually sank into sleep, deeper and deeper.

He dreamed of a group of people opposite him saying, "Thank you." The toads beside him whispered an explanation:

"These are your emotional regulators. You taught their children so much."

He dreamed of his heavenly parents telling him:

"We've waited a long time for you, son."

When he awoke, he had become a god in heaven.
