The narrow passage where Pakura had chosen to make her stand had transformed into a stone oven.
Pakura, standing in the center of the only passable route, no longer looked like a kunoichi she looked like a bonfire with infinite fuel.
The air around her seemed to feed the flames even more, making it difficult even for Pakura herself to breathe.
In front of her, the Iwa ninjas kept a cautious distance. Gari, the leader of the Explosion Corps, watched with cruel patience, though traces of impatience were already beginning to show.
He knew Shakuton was not an infinite endurance technique. Every heat sphere Pakura kept active, every burst of vapor that incinerated an enemy bold enough to advance, stole part of the woman's chakra.
"Don't let her rest use long-range jutsu. It doesn't matter how long we wait; she'll tire, and that will be our chance to finish her," Gari said from his position, staring at the figure shrouded in flames.
The sky filled with rock spears and stones, all heading in the same direction. Pakura, with dry eyes and skin reddened by her own heat, moved her hands with an agility that defied her exhaustion.
Her heat spheres intercepted the projectiles, turning them into liquid lava or dust before they could touch her as had happened the entire time she had been holding them off.
One by one, the Iwa ninjas tried to flank along the canyon walls. Pakura, without looking, extended her palm upward. An invisible burst of heat struck the stone, and the ninjas climbing fell to the ground their lungs collapsed from inhaling air at a thousand degrees. They couldn't even scream; their throats were too dry to make a sound.
"Seven… eight…" Pakura counted under her breath, her vision growing blurry.
She had eliminated most of the ninjas who had tried to pass. Of the original twenty-five, barely six remained but she was at her absolute limit. Her chakra, which was no small amount, had begun to use up the last reserves she had left.
Gari stepped forward, his boots crunching on the scorched stone.
"Impressive, Pakura. You really are strong but I think it's time you gave up. Your men should have reached a safe place by now, so just end this and let us finish you," Gari said impatiently from his side.
Pakura tried to respond, but could only cough her own body was almost completely dry of water.
Her knees buckled for a moment, but she forced herself to stay upright. Though she knew her team was safe, she didn't want to let these people kill her she preferred to die by her own power.
"Not… yet…" she whispered, but her chakra reserves didn't share her mentality nearly emptying completely and causing her previous five heat spheres to reduce to just one that barely held on weakly.
Gari smiled a grin of total victory. He wrapped his fists in Bakuton chakra.
"Time's up. Your sacrifice was brave, but useless. You'll die here, and then I'll kill whatever reinforcements arrive too," Gari said with a wicked smile.
Gari charged forward at explosive speed, his right fist loaded with a blast capable of demolishing a mountain.
Pakura closed her eyes, accepting her end, praying that the time she had bought was enough for her shinobi.
!CLAP!
A dry, rhythmic clap echoed through the canyon walls, cutting through the sound of the wind and everything around it.
Before Gari's blow could connect, the space around Pakura distorted. In a blink, the kunoichi disappeared from the attack's path.
Gari's fist slammed into the ground, creating a massive crater that shook the earth but his target was no longer there.
"What…?" Gari turned, bewildered and confused by what had just happened.
Ten meters away, atop a rock, Pakura appeared gasping for air held up by a very muscular man who placed a canteen to her mouth so she could drink water.
"You've done enough, Pakura," Todo said calmly, gently placing her in a safe spot. "Rest. We'll take it from here."
"Who…?" Pakura mumbled, looking toward the center of the ravine.
In the place where she had stood seconds before, a young man now stood with a gaze radiating wild confidence.
It was Daigo, casually brushing dust off his shoulders with insulting calm.
"Well, well… so you're the famous Gari from the Explosion Corps," Daigo said, adjusting his arm guards. "I was expecting someone more… explosive."
Gari roared in rage, feeling humiliated by the interruption.
"A Suna brat! I'll pulverize you along with this place!"
Gari charged again, launching a series of explosive punches. Daigo didn't retreat. His hands moved in a sequence of seals at a speed Pakura could barely follow with her exhausted eyes.
"Doton: Sekiryū Hōdan!" Daigo roared, striking the ground.
The earth just erupted upward, forming the massive head of a solid stone dragon that seemed to rise from the very ground itself It intercepted Gari's attack.
Gari's explosion destroyed part of the dragon, but Daigo was already in motion. Using the rock remains as cover, he appeared in the Iwa ninja's blind spot.
"Breathing of the Seven Heavens: First Activation!" Daigo's aura changed his speed doubled, and his muscles tensed like steel cables.
Daigo connected a direct blow to Gari's ribs. The impact sounded like a cannon shot. Gari flew backward into the canyon wall, spitting blood as his ribs shattered.
"Impossible…" Gari muttered, trying to stand. "That level of strength… and that Earth element…"
Daigo stopped, maintaining a perfect combat stance, his hands beginning to be covered by a thin layer of pink chakra that glowed under the dim light of dusk.
"It's a shame you're already tired because I don't think I could beat you if you were at 100%. But Pakura made sure to leave you ready for the final blow," Daigo said with a cold smile.
Todo, from his position next to Pakura, watched the battlefield with approval.
"Seems the training bore fruit faster than expected," Todo commented while starting to apply basic first aid to a Pakura who looked at Daigo with a mix of astonishment and relief.
Daigo, finishing his words, resumed his attack on Gari who, not lowering his guard this time, barely dodged.
Retreating so the remaining Iwa ninjas could throw themselves at Daigo with kunai.
At this, Daigo didn't back down instead he increased his pace, meeting the first one with a strong punch to the jaw and then a kick to the chest enough to send him flying.
The second came from his right side though to this one's surprise, he dodged Daigo's strike to try to headbutt him. Daigo seeing the challenge didn't hesitate to do the same.
A headbutt clash where the Iwa ninja lost to Daigo's strong head and fell to the ground only for a kunai to pierce his head right where the headbutt landed.
"One less," Daigo said, disappearing from his spot an switching with a earth clone that took a stone spear jutsu and got destroyed.
Though seconds later for the bad luck of the Iwa ninja, a strong blow to the back of the head ended his life.
"Two less," Daigo said, blocking an attack from Gari who had grabbed him using a full-power explosion toward Daigo, who was sent flying backward.
"That was close bad luck that the first jutsu my sensei taught me is this one," Daigo said as the smoke cleared, revealing a layer of water around the impact area.
Making the explosion not do maximum damage just a little.
"Not bad for a brat. Seems Suna has some cards up its sleeve for this war" Gari said, looking at Daigo before glancing toward where Pakura and Todo were.
"That's right it's a shame I won't let you escape to tell what happened here," Daigo said, activating the Second Breath an aura rose around him.
Without wasting time, both began exchanging blows Daigo taking the advantage thanks to Gari's wounds, who with his experience managed to match his speed.
And responding with explosive strikes that put Daigo in trouble who used his Water element to resist the explosions.
Seeing the situation wouldn't end well if he didn't go serious, Daigo retreated to recover oxygen and activate his Third breathing Gari, sensing the change, prepared himself.
"Gari, this time I won't hold back I'll go all out. See if you can keep up," Daigo said before disappearing from his previous spot.
Gari who had prepared didn't see Daigo disappear until a strong pain in his stomach made him look down to see Daigo's fist.
Though it wasn't the only one another fist struck his face, then another and another Daigo didn't waste a single moment, continuing to pummel Gari like a boxing bag.
Finishing the punch combo, a strong kick to the chest was enough for Gari to fall to the ground completely defeated, blood coming from his mouth and body after the beating.
The remaining Iwa ninjas tried to flee but some applause were enough for their once whole bodies to be destroyed by Todo who didn't hesitate for a second to finish them all.
"Sensei, everything's ready. Gari should still be alive to take him and extract information," Daigo said, walking toward the defeated figure of Gari while Todo watched from afar.
Gari feeling his body couldn't move stayed still until he noticed the shadow right in front of his face.
"Not bad, brat. Though geniuses like you are easy to fool. See you in hell," Gari said with a smile on his face his body lighting up in a powerful explosion.
The explosion was so strong that even the place where he was collapsed, leaving everything completely destroyed except three figures a little farther away.
"Uff, that was close. Thanks, Sensei if not, I would've gone to hell with him," Daigo said, cold sweat running down his back after escaping death by a hair.
"My favorite student, I hope you learned your lesson when fighting someone like him, never lower your guard. That's when geniuses die," Todo said, hitting Daigo on the head—who only covered himself from the pain.
"I understand, Sensei. It won't happen again. I just thought he wouldn't suicide with his own explosion to kill me," Daigo said, now carrying an exhausted, sleeping Pakura on his back.
"Well, he was the leader of the Explosion Corps it was obvious he knew how to blow himself up. Though it's time to return to your training I still have more to teach you," Todo said, starting to walk.
"As you say, Sensei. Though that technique of yours is very surprising what's it called?" Daigo asked, walking beside Todo.
"I call it Boogie Woogie. You like it, right?" Todo asked with a satisfied smile toward his prized technique.
"Boogie Woogie doesn't sound like a powerful technique it's quite strong since you can teleport anyone in your line of sight," Daigo said.
"It's not as simple as you think. Maybe I'll teach it to you later if you manage to conquer her but for now I'll just tell you it uses the Water element to work," Todo said.
"As you say, Sensei. Besides, since I said Pakura-chan is older than me, I doubt she'd want to be with me and right now I'm focused on getting stronger," Daigo said.
"That's what they all say. If Tsunade-chan came and asked me to be her partner, I wouldn't refuse. My student sometimes you don't know what women think. You just have to be prepared when they arrive."
"Understood, Sensei."
And so the group of three continued on their way to their destination unaware that, by luck or fate, someone had barely survived and escaped the area to report everything that had just happened.
