Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: A Net Cast in Ruins

Boom boom boom!

More than a dozen figures smashed through the walls of the dilapidated building and rushed inside.

They moved swiftly, sweeping through the entire house in a matter of moments

yet Fushimi Kyo was nowhere to be seen.

"Leader, he's gone."

As a professionally trained organization, they never revealed real names during operations.

"Search again!"

"The trap we set this time even an SS-class ghoul wouldn't be able to retreat unscathed."

"He might be hiding somewhere inside, treating his injuries,"

Matsumae commanded coldly.

"Yes, Leader!"

The group scattered once more, searching every corner of the building for a long while

still, there was no trace of Fushimi Kyo.

A few minutes later, the RC gas finally dissipated through the holes torn open in the walls.

Under the illumination of the lights, everything inside the house became clearly visible.

Kagune crisscrossed the space like a massive spiderweb,

piercing countless small holes through the floor, walls, and ceiling.

Yet Fushimi Kyo was nowhere to be found

as if he had vanished into thin air.

"Leader… I'm afraid we've failed."

"Leader, we should withdraw,"

two people advised in low voices.

"Damn it!"

Matsumae smashed a section of kagune apart with a single punch, then took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing her surging rage.

"We "

Before she could finish issuing the retreat order,

a lazy voice suddenly drifted down from above the beams.

"Hey… are you looking for me?"

Whoosh.

Everyone snapped their heads upward in unison.

There he was

Fushimi Kyo, sitting casually atop a roof beam, looking down at them with a mocking smile.

"He's… completely unharmed?"

Matsumae's pupils shrank.

All the effort they had poured into setting up this trap

and it had achieved nothing at all.

Before deploying it, they had rehearsed countless times.

Their hypothetical enemy had been an SS-class ghoul at peak strength.

Every single drill ended the same way

the target gravely wounded, on the brink of death.

But now, what were they seeing?

The enemy was staring at them with open amusement.

What baffled them even more was this

When the RC gas hadn't fully dispersed earlier,

that had been the perfect moment for him to launch a sneak attack.

Yet he hadn't moved at all.

Was this… absolute confidence in his own strength?

As that possibility surfaced,

even these battle-hardened operatives felt their hair stand on end.

A sense of foreboding quietly crept into their hearts.

"Leader… what do we do?"

They were facing someone with power beyond SS-class.

For them, this was already pushing their limits.

"Fight to the death."

"If we scatter and flee, we'll only be picked off one by one."

"Besides…"

Matsumae's voice sank low.

"Every one of us owes a life debt. This is the time to repay it."

"Heh… not bad,"

Fushimi Kyo chuckled lightly as he leapt down from the beam.

He landed in front of them and looked straight at Matsumae.
