Chapter 9 - Part 8

The wind howled, sharper than any steel, as Lily's blade whistled through the air. Every time their powers collided, the gale was forced outward, deflecting violently to the left and right of the impact zone. Lily was a blur of motion, striking from the left, then the right, then diving from above before twisting into an upward thrust. She wasn't just fighting; she was dancing, her movements so fluid and rapid that the Vampire's eyes struggled to track her. For the first time, the monster was forced onto the retreat, unable to fully match her blistering pace. It was clear why she was feared as the second-fastest Defender in the realm. With a cry of focused rage, Lily lunged forward, her rapier aimed directly at the Vampire's chest. He snarled, meeting the point of her blade with his brass-knuckled fist. The resulting explosion of energy sent a massive gust of wind screaming in the opposite direction. Both fighters were hurled backward, their boots digging deep furrows into the earth as they fought to remain upright. The Vampire straightened, clicking his tongue in dark amusement.

"Ooooh... You're a feisty one," he chuckled, his eyes glowing with renewed interest. "It's pretty clear you're the strongest one here. Such magnificent magical energy".

Lily didn't lower her guard. She held her rapier steady, her voice ringing out with the authority of her station.

"By order of the King and the entire body of the Imperial City, I order you to stand down—or die by my hand!".

The Vampire threw his head back and laughed, a cold, evil sound that echoed through the clearing.

"Hehehehe... You have no idea who you're talking to. But I admire your strength and bravery". He leaned forward, a predator's grin stretching across his face.

"What's your name, princess?".

"DON'T CALL ME THAT!" Lily snapped, her voice cutting through the wind. "You've had your way long enough. Surrender now, or die!"

The Vampire didn't flinch. Instead, he tapped his finger against his chin as if weighing a difficult choice. "Hmm... it's really hard to choose," he mused with a dark glint in his eye. "How about I propose a third option?"

The ground began to shudder. A low, rhythmic vibration hummed through the earth, intensifying until the very stones beneath their feet were dancing. The blackness of the 'DOOMBREAKER' magical energy began to bleed from his fists down to his feet, engulfing his entire frame in a shroud of crushing gravity.

"I choose..."

BAM! The earth cratered where he stood, a deep depression forming instantly under the weight of his power.

"...BLOOD!"

BOOM! He vanished. A thunderous sonic boom echoed across the plains as he charged. He was no longer just fast; he was a blurring force of nature. His pupils glowed a void-like black, his smile twisting into something truly demonic. Lily's eyes widened. She raised her rapier to parry, but her arms trembled violently against the sheer kinetic energy of his strikes. Each punch felt like a falling mountain. She fought to keep her footing, her breath coming in ragged gasps, but the onslaught was too much. On the fifth strike, the vibration was so intense that her grip finally failed. Her rapier was launched high into the air, spinning away before landing uselessly in the tall grass.

"HAH!" the Vampire barked.

He buried a heavy kick into Lily's midsection. She coughed up a spray of blood, the air leaving her lungs in a pained gasp. The force didn't just knock her back—he manipulated the gravity around her, increasing her flight speed and distance. She skipped across the earth like a stone on water, bouncing and rolling through the broad, treeless meadow before finally coming to a stop. She lay still in the flattened grass, the wind whistling softly over the broken battlefield. The wind blew cold under the pale moonlight, whistling through the broad, empty grasses between Shibawa and Tokino. Lily lay broken on the uneven earth, clutching her stomach as a fire of agony burned through her midsection. Gritting her teeth, she forced herself up onto her knees, her breath hitching in her throat. She scanned the clearing. The Vampire was gone. A shadow fell over her. Lily looked up just in time to see a dark shape hurtling toward her from the sky. She threw herself backward, rolling desperately as the Vampire collided with the earth with a thunderous BAM!. The impact left a jagged depression in the soil where she had been a second before.

She scrambled to her feet, but he was already moving, his silhouette a blur against the moon.

"Where's the bravery?" the Vampire hissed, his voice a jagged edge in the dark. Lily lunged to the side as his fist plowed into the dirt, but she wasn't fast enough to escape his reach. A hand clamped onto her long, light-blue hair with a violent jerk.

"AHHH!" Lily cried out as she was hauled upward, her scalp stinging with white-hot pain. The Vampire held her head steady, his void-black eyes boring into her own. "I thought you were going to kill me, Princess!". With a contemptuous sneer, he swung his arm, throwing her like a ragdoll. Lily hit the ground hard and rolled, her armor scraping against the earth until she skidded to a halt. Dazed, she tried to lift her head, her grunts of pain the only sound in the meadow. Suddenly, a heavy hand slammed the back of her head down, burying her face into the dirt.

The Vampire hoisted her back up by her hair, relishing the sight of her defeat. Blood trailed from her nose and split lips, carving dark paths through the dust on her cheeks. He leaned in close, his fangs catching the moonlight as a twisted, evil smile spread across his face.

"Magical energy... bravery... it all bleeds the same in the end," he whispered, his eyes glowing with an unholy black light.
