Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: An Ode To Starting Engagement

Daniel ran and ran, through the woods and through the town. He knew that the vampire was behind him; he knew it was coming for him. Daniel tried to scrounge a plan from his brain, but he was perplexed; then he realized he was actually pretty close to Jeffers' house. He arrived at Jeffers' house, and when he got to the front porch, he knocked on the front door, and he didn't stop knocking until Jeffers opened it. He then burst through the door to get inside and shut it behind him. "Hey, what is wrong with you, asshole!" Jeffers exclaimed, "My parents aren't home, I'm not supposed to have anyone over. I'm gonna get grounded now, man. Shit!" Daniel lay his back on the wall and sighed in relief, "dude, we might die." Daniel said, seemingly exhausted, "What? Die? What are you talking about?" Jeffers responded, tilting his head and narrowing his eyes. "There's a fucking vampire," Daniel responded, peaking out the window near the door. "Another one? How'd that happen? Why do they have so much interest in you?" Jeffers questioned. Daniel sighed, then stated, "Well, you know that girl we met at that park after the first vampire we fought?" Jeffers nodded, "Well, she was a part of a vampire-hunting group, and then that vampire killed all of them! Every last on slaughtered just like that." Daniel snapped his fingers to show the speed at which they were killed. Jeffers moved his hand under his chin and looked up at the ceiling, pondering for a moment, "I don't know if I really believe that if I'm being honest with you." Daniel's eyes widened in shock, "What!" He screamed, "After everything that we went through last night, you don't believe me?" Jeffers chuckled, "well you do have to admit, it doesn't seem very plausible." Daniel gasped and stared at Jeffers, who was barely holding in a laugh, "this shits not funny, dude… people died." Then, when Daniel said that, they heard a knock on the door, then a voice, it was that of the vampire, "May I please come in?" He kept knocking as if that'd make it more likely that he'd be let inside. Jeffers and Daniels eyes trailed towards the door before completely turning their heads to look at it. "Who are you?" Jeffers asked, "He's a vampire!" Daniel loudly intervenes. "No I'm not." Jeffers gave a confused look to Daniel, then asked, "Are you a vampire?" Daniel quickly intervened, "Are you serious, man?" Jeffers sighed, "We're not letting you in o' demon of the night." They then heard smashing and shattering through the door. "Oh man, he's breaking my mom's flower vases," Jeffers yelled and put his hands on his head. Jeffers turned to the door and exclaimed, "Stop doing that, asshole!" Jeffers banged on the door, "Stop doing that! Asshole!" Daniel then explained, "Dude, he's not gonna listen. He's a vampire, so you have to let him in for him to be allowed to enter the house. He's smashing shit so that you have to let him in." Jeffers' face scrunched up, "What a jerk." The smashing then abruptly stopped. "Why'd it stop?" Daniel was puzzled. Jeffers sulked, "He probably broke all of them." Jeff's phone then rang, he pulled it out, and as he read the notification, his face dropped, "My parents are going to be home in 30 minutes. They're going to be so pissed." "They're gonna be so dead if we don't do something about this guy," Daniel responded. "What are we gonna do?" Jeffers asked. Although Jeffers was not a very intelligent person, and if you asked his peers, they would most likely describe him as a selfish, stupid asshole, he did truly care for his parents. Daneil sat there and contemplated for a second before his head lit up with an idea. "Do you have a wooden broom?" Jeffers nodded and went to grab the broom. When he came back with it, Daniel had grabbed a kitchen knife. When Daniel got the broom, he sawed it in half with the kitchen knife, then whittled the top of the broom to a fine, sharp point. "Oh, it's a wooden stake." Jeffers realized. Then Daniel crept out the back door.

Daniel put the makeshift wooden stake in his mouth and climbed the side of the house until he was standing on the roof. Daniel pricked his finger with the stake to see if it was sharp enough. He then walked to the front of the roof and looked down on the porch, but the vampire was nowhere in sight. He then turned around and saw the vampire jump on him, and they both fell off the roof, splitting as they landed on the ground. Daniels' back seared in pain, but it was noticeably a lighter pain than what should have come from falling off a 2-story house straight on the back. Daniel stood up, holding his back. He then noticed that his jaw strength must have strengthened with his newfound abilities, as the wooden stake was still in his mouth. He then looked around before finding the vampire walking towards him. The vampire also seemed fazed by the fall, which took Daniel by surprise. Was this vampire not very durable? Daniel's assumption had always been that vampires couldn't take harm from anything but decapitation, holy water, a wooden stake to the heart, garlic, and, of course, sunlight. Perhaps some vampires, maybe the weaker ones, could take damage or injuries, but they will quickly regenerate from those injuries. It didn't matter. The vampire had clearly regained his wits and was ready for a fight. Again, Daniel took the fighting stance that would make him look like a martial arts expert out of pure instinct. It was also in this moment before their fight truly began that Daniel reflected on the people who had died, on the people whom he was protecting, but also this vampire. Does he have a family? Does he love another in the same way he loves himself, as humans do? Does he even have the capacity to experience such emotions? Daniel then concluded that no matter what the answers to these questions were, he needed to take the vampire's life. This decision wasn't based on any emotion or philosophical response, but purely on Daniel's innate desire for his survival.
