Chapter 2 - Legion ‘Camp’

The walk to the legion camp was boring. The only thing I had to do was watch for landmarks, creatures, and legion patrols. We were technically not in the Mojave, somewhere in between the I-15 and what would be the divide. Outside the Mojave desert was mostly NCR territory and the only legion presence was raiding groups meant to take slaves from where the legion would eventually expand.

The small legion camp I was going to wasn't much based on what intel said. As I neared the area I could immediately tell that intel was wrong. I checked my map once again and found, to my horror, that the 'camp' was supposedly a building in Pahrump. It was a town about 50 miles from Las Vegas, separated by Mt Charleston and Red Rock Canyon.

I knew way more about the legion then the NCR did at this point so I was sure that this was more than just a camp. It was just on the border of NCR territory and near Ashton. The nearest NCR presence was the camp I'd been stationed near Kingston peak. This camp was likely a forward operating base of the legion, set up by the frumentarii. It had taken about a day of walking to get here so I was completely alone in scouting this place. I didn't know of any nearby places besides this so the chance of some kind of wandering or patrolling allies was small.

I made my way close to the Pahrump Valley Highway and walked towards the town while staying cautious of everything around me. On my way into the town at dark I entered a small group of streets just outside the town itself. Most of the buildings were completely boarded, burned, or collapsed. One of the few buildings standing and open was a brick home with a still standing metal fence.

I jumped the gate and readied my smg as I approached the door of the house. I grabbed the doorknob and twisted. The door opened with a sharp squeak and I entered. I quickly cleared the five room, two bath, house with my weak ass flash light and started fortifying a room and trapping the house. A mine at the back door, a tripwire grenade at the front. Three bear traps at windows. Multiple tripwire grenades throughout the house and the five other mines placed. A sensor array around my room.

Finally I settled for the night with a can of beef stew and some crackers. The next morning I had an MRE of hardtack, sausage jerky, dried cheese, and a small block of pemmican. Not the best breakfast I could have had from an MRE of the NCR but very far from the worst. I grabbed up all my traps and properly looted the house.

I left with 2 Mac n cheese, 1 bubble gum, 1 cram, 1 insta mash, 3 pork n beans, 2 beers, 1 scotch, various weak drugs, 1 duct tape, various scrap, 1 wrench, 1 wonderglue, 1 sensor module, 1 fission battery, 1 lever action shotgun, 36 20 gauge shotgun shells, and 1 9mm extended mag with 14 rounds alongside it.

I left the small area and continued down the road into the town to find the legion camp. All I had on its location was a coordinate mark on my large paper map. When I eventually found it, it was because of a small fire set up to cook with. I'd went off the road and found a small hill to perch on overlooking the camp. It was made out of an old raceway.

There were legion patrols everywhere with dogs. I could see slave pens and crosses. The main buildings were surrounded by tents and fire pits. I found a centurion in their infamous pieced together armor standing atop the main building of the raceway. He was tall and broad with mostly super mutant and ranger armor on. His helmet was an awesome mix of Riot helmet and centurion style.

He had two 9mm SMGs on his hips and a thermic lance on his back. In his hands was hunting shotgun with some kind of circular magazine. I looked over the building he stood atop then changed to the other buildings. The tallest building on the raceway was the entrance gate house. The top seemed to have its roof removed and replaced with some kind of crows nest. I could see five legion snipers there, all wielding a hunting rifle or marksman carbine.

I quickly made sure I was well hidden and kept scouting. I took notes and made number estimates. I marked possible supply routes and tracked patrol patterns. I counted the slaves and other horrible things the legion did and noted it all down. I left and began carefully scouting the surroundings.

There were a few buildings around the raceway but they all had legion in them. That left Manse. Manse was a part of the town across the road from the raceway. Most of it was urban with lots of empty space. I slunk through the streets between buildings and destruction. The legion camp was hard to get to for attack as the closest avenue of attack was the streets of manse.

I continued to scout the area and eventually found something that might be useful. Beyond the urban sprawl was a golf club. I didn't dare enter as many marks left by people of the area indicated that it was full of ghouls. It was all fenced in so I walked the perimeter and took a count of the ghouls locked in. As the sun set I finished my count at 273. There had been a party of sorts going on when the bombs dropped so the numbers were pretty high.

These ghouls could be used and led to the legion camp to be cannon fodder for an assault. I made note of the strategy and moved on to set up at the raceway to scout it at night. The night patrol revealed much larger numbers than I had estimated and showed that this group had advanced tech in the form of turrets and protectrons with search lights attached to them.

I was also able to mark supplies of the camp as many legion members went to get something. I finally made a decent map of the place then snuck away. The patrol numbers had increased considerably but with the cover of dark I made my escape. I traveled back to the building I'd stayed in previously and set up in the same room for some rest.

I caught a few hours of sleep then packed up after a quick breakfast of pemmican and peanut butter on crackers. I spent the rest of the day making my way back to the outpost. Before I got to the outpost I made a small hidden overlook of bushes on a hill to wait out the rest of the day in to check for followers.

All I spotted was geckos so I packed up at midnight and got back to camp. I made my report, delivered my scouting notes, and elaborated on a few more things. I left after twelve and finally got back to my tent. I had a small meal, cleaned myself up in a small shower house, then passed out in my cot.
