Chapter 2 - The sunny days

The sunny days

"It was an argument that separated the butt tocks "

"Oh oh oh"

"So how can our ladies swagger with one bump"

"Oh oh oh..."

(Snooze)

"It was an argument that separated the butt tocks "

"Oh oh oh"

"So how can our ladies swagger with one bump"

"Oh oh oh..."

The howling sound of the phone ringtone pierced the air, jokingly signaling the start of another day. The alarm clock on the phone blasted to life, echoing the mellow sound of the voice of the phone .

The room was still dark, but the sound was enough to rouse our Lena from her sweet slumber. She groggily reached for her phone and hit the snooze button, hoping for just a few more minutes of sleep. But the phone ringtone wouldn't let up.

Just then, Lena's mom burst into the room, pulling open the curtains to let in the faint morning light.

"Wakey wakey! School time!"she called out, her voice cheerful but firm. "You know you have that math test today, don't be late!" She walked over and shook her gently, the phone sound fading into the background as the reality of the day hit her.

"I think your dad told you to do someting about that ringtone of yours, it's not Holly at all."she laments.

"I will do that when am tired of it"Lena replied groggily. She rubbed her eyes finally waking up. "Okay mom, I'm up," she mumbled, swinging her legs over the side of the bed.

Her mom smiled and handed her a cup of tea. "Breakfast is ready, hurry up and get dressed."she turned and left the room, leaving Lena to get ready for school.

Lena took a sip of the hot tea which was given to her by her mother, feeling it wake her up a bit more. As she got up to get dressed, she noticed the math textbook lying open on her desk from last night's study session. Now she was completely awake, she got carried away there on Tik Tok last night untill she forgot to study.

"Guess I'd better review those notes again," she muttered to herself.

She quickly scanned the notes, trying to cram in a few more formulas and theorems.

Her mom called out from downstairs, "Breakfast is getting cold! Hurry up!" She grabbed her kitenge bag, shoved the textbook in, and headed down to the kitchen. The smell of chapati and chai filled the air, and she knew she'd have a good breakfast before facing that math test.

While eating, she quickly scanned the notes, trying to cram in a few more formulas and theorems. However unhygenic and unhealthy it is she will think about it some other time but for now she doesn't want to be at Mr Mwangi's bad side.

Her childhood friend Caren texted, "Yo,are you ready for the test?" She typed back, "Almost, heading to class now." Grabbing her bag, Lena headed out of her parents house and joined the stream of students rushing to morning lectures.

She walked into the lecture hall just as the lecturer was setting up the test papers. She slipped into an empty seat, exchanged a quick glance with Caren and waited for the test to start.

The lecturer, Prof. Mwangi, cleared his throat. "Alright, everyone. The test is based on last week's topics. You have an hour. Go!"

The questions looked manageable , until she hit question four . She scribbled some workings, hoping the formulas would come back to her,Caren wearing bright colors like the reflection she was whispered, "How's it?"

Lena whispered back, "it's alright, you?"she mumbled, "Heh, harder than a rock.

Lena giggled quitly the sound prominent in the quite hall. Prof. Mwangi shot her a stern look, and she quickly focused back on the test.

She managed to crack question four, and momentum kicked in ,she breezed through a few more. Time was ticking, though. She glanced at Caren; she was still stuck on question two

As she handed in her paper, Prof. Mwangi announced, "Break time! Grab a snack before the next lecture." The usual campus buzz filled the air , chamas discussing politics, students cramming notes, boys talking about football, ladies gossiping about other ladies and hot men and the smell of mandazi waing from the cafeteria.

And that hooked her, she remembered a joke in campus where a student liked to say that after campus she would have drunk almost a gallon of milk with 20km mtura's(cow intestines mixed with it's blood that is usually roasted on coal) and several tonnes of flour.

She headed to the cafeteria with Caren, grabbing mandazi and chai.

"Daaah, that test wasn't as bad as I thought," Lena said, dunking her mandazi.

Caren lughed. "Kamum seriously, and the way I struggled with almost all the question " she joked while calling Lena her childhood name.

"Guess you need extra tuition!"

As they chatted, Lena's phone buzzed, group project meeting at 2 PM. She confirmed with the group, and Caren reminded Lena about the soccer trials at 4 PM. ,"Don't forget mzee needs players." She said as they parted ways.

Yeah Lena is a handball player at campus.

As she walked to the library to work on her project, she noticed the sun was shining brighter now. The campus was buzzing – students lounging on the grass, others rushing to class. She found a quiet spot in the library and pulled out her notes.

As she flipped through her group's research, her phone buzzed. It was a message from the group chat:

"Library café in 10 mins to finalize slides?" She typed "On my way."

Lena was lost in thought, scrolling through her phone, when she suddenly bumped into someone.

"Oh, sorry about that!" She said, looking up to see a 22-year - old girl with a sweet, innocent face that makes you want to protect her . She's curvy in all the right places, with a warm, bubbly personality that draws people in . She was wearing fitted ankara dress that accentuate her curves.

"No problem,am kate"

Lona was a bit starstruck.

Kate, the campus flower, stood in front of Lena. Her heart accelerated a note. Okay she is completely straight but just like other human being likes beuty, handsome and sparkly things that's why she vibes completely with Caren even though her beuty was of a different style.

Extending her hand back for the handshake " am Lena Hector"

"Mind if I join you for a coffee? I have a group project too."

Lena's eyes widened as Kate asked to join her. "Uh, no problem! I'd love the company ." She quickly gathered her notes, trying to play it cool.

As they walked to the library café, Kate started chatting about the group project. "So, what's your take on the topic? I think we should focus on sustainable practices."

Lena nodded, impressed. "Exactly! I've been researching eco-friendly materials. We could incorporate that into our presentation."

They grabbed coffee and settled into a corner, laptops open. Kate pulled out a notebook filled with neat handwriting. "I've got some ideas for the slides. Want to take a look?"

As they worked, Lena couldn't help but sneak glitches at Kate. Who's this girl? She seemed nice, and smart too. Caren would love her .

An hour flew by. Kate glanced at her watch. "Shoot, I have drama rehearsal. Can we wrap this up?"

Lena nodded. "Yeah, sure. Let's finalize the slides and meet up later to practice?"

Kate smiled. "Perfect. Thanks for the help, Lena."

As Kate rushed off, Lena felt a flatter Campus just got more interesting .

"Kate's the campus sweetheart – charming, talented, and kind. She's the drama club star, with a smile that lights up the auditorium . But beneath the surface, Kate's got layers.

Her passion are on drama, volunteering at a local kids' center, and secretly writing poetry.

She is a lover of vintage clothes, has a coffee stain on her favorite scarf , and gets nervous when people praise her.

She always has that goal of wanting to bridge campus cliques and bring people together through art .

Growing up in a strict household, Kate's learned to balance expectations with her true self. She's the go-to person for friends seeking advice, but she rarely opens up about her own struggles ."

"That's all about her Lena and why are you looking at me strangely"

"I'm wondering why you know alot about her"

"That's my passion,I must investigate, stalk then date but that Kate girl is too innocent to be perfect I gave up the first time I saw her so what am telling you it's all hearsay from my fellow comrade in arms"Jamal one of her group members told Lena when he saw her in thoughts.

"One more thing I had that one night, after a drama rehearsal, one of her dorm room member spilled coffee in to her poetry paper "In the silence, I find my voice..."Her other roommate, Mia, walked in to find Kate pouting and on the verge of tears when she was asked that's when she discovered Kate could write poetry"

"Then what happened"

"She was shocked at first then she asked Kate why hide her poet and in a blushing voice Kate answered that not everyone understands, the friend in return advised her to keep writing because her words matter"

Lena laughed at his exaggerating act

"Anyway how is handball training?"

"There is a match at 4 PM and you know mzee needs players"

"Play to win and I will sponsor your meals all this week"

"I don't need to trust you to know you are lying"

"What's with that look I played betika and aviator yesterday I won some thousands and don't talk about HELB so as we speak right now am loaded"

"Gaming can be addictive..." Before she could finish her preachings Jamaal cut her into it.

"Are you in or not"

"Am in,why miss free meals"

"Deal and remember to connect me with that hot chick"while walking away.

"You mean Kayla,Jamaal don't walk away I thought you distanced yourself from women after last time incident?."

"What incident?" An indifferent voice chimed in.

"Ooh Caren why pop out of nowhere"

"Spill the beans, Lena"

"Don't you remember that time he came when all his face was swollen"

"I do, didn't he brag to our group girls how he was experimenting on traditional method to increase our behind?"

"Yeah that time"

"I remember because that day he looked too funny. he told us the best way is to smear honey on our behind then we walk near a bee hive?"

"Yeah "

"So you mean there were more to the story. Now speak don't put me hanging."

"He was dating a soldier's wife, they were new in our estate and apparently he didn't know she was married,so one day the soldier came home earlier than his usual visits then boom he caught them in the act , Jamaalwas beaten badly and to make matters worse the soldier removed all his clothes and chased him naked in the street"

"Is there any evidence?" She looked at Lena with an accusing eye

Rolling her eyes she retorted "don't give me that kind of an eye and rephrase your sentence"

"You know me kamum, so did anyone take pictures or videos I need them asap"

"They did but you know his dad is in government everything was wrapped up"

"What a bummer!" She looked dejected.

"So how does that matter explain why he should distance himself from the other gender?"

"For his dad to wrap the matter he was told to swear never to date "

"Okay and he just did!" She exclaimed.

"Yeah he was desperate at that time"Lena replied in a calm manner like that was to be expected.

As Caren and Lena gossip about Jamal and K-pop idols her eye twitch.

Meanwhile on Kate's side.

Kate's drama club's struggling for funding. The university's cutting arts programs, and Kate needs a big win to save it .

She sets her sights on Lena's handball team, sensing an opportunity. If she befriends Lena, she can pitch the club's performance at the sports fest, boosting their chances .
