Chapter 1 - The Beginning of Everything

Whoosh—!

On the street, law enforcement vehicles were parked, and dozens of Inspectors held handguns.

They aimed at a man standing on the road ahead, dressed in patient clothes, holding a bloody, mangled young man in one hand, while continuously striking the youth's body with the other.

The Chief leading the group, sweat dripping from his forehead, shouted at the man in patient clothes: "Jiang Yan, release the hostage immediately, and I can still offer you a lighter sentence!"

A few days ago

Nanwu Country, Haizhou, HQ City, on a certain street.

It was currently past nine in the evening, and there were only a few pedestrians on the street.

"Mom, let me carry the things." Jiang Yan, wearing a black jacket and smiling, reached out to take the bags carried by the middle-aged woman beside him.

The middle-aged woman laughed, "Xiao Yan, you're the big boss today, let Mom handle carrying the bags."

Trailing behind Jiang Yan was a little girl. She reached out, tugged on Jiang Yan's sleeve, and pointed to a snack shop across the street: "Brother, I want ice cream."

"Alright, you and Mom wait here for Brother." Jiang Yan smiled and rubbed the little girl's head.

Boom!!!

Just as he turned around, a violent engine roar came from behind.

Jiang Yan heard the noise and turned his head, seeing a white sports car rushing toward the three of them at an extremely high speed. Jiang Yan's pupils contracted sharply—it was too fast!

"Brother!" A childish voice cried out.

Bang bang bang!

The next moment, three heavy thuds sounded on the street.

Jiang Yan was grazed by the edge of the sports car and rolled heavily for six or seven meters, falling onto the other side of the street.

Screech! A sudden sound of brakes echoed.

"Ah! Someone's been hit!" A sharp scream rang out, and the surrounding people rushed over to gather around.

Jiang Yan lay on the ground, his whole body in intense pain, his head dizzy. Facing the sports car, he saw blood everywhere.

A violent pang twisted in his heart, tears welled up in his eyes, and though he wanted to speak, he could only manage a tiny whisper: "Mom! Little Sister..."

The sports car door opened, and a red-haired youth wearing a white T-shirt with a flushed face stepped out.

He looked at the bloody scene and the three people lying on the ground, opened his mouth, and spat: "How unlucky."

Saying this, he took out his phone and started dialing.

"You bastard, you dared to drink and drive and hit people!" A middle-aged man, who was dialing the ambulance, angrily scolded the red-haired youth reeking of alcohol.

The red-haired youth said arrogantly, "None of your damn business. I can afford to compensate for three lives."

This was the last image Jiang Yan saw. The next moment, his vision went black, and he completely lost consciousness.

Three days later

Central City Hospital.

Inside the ward.

"Mr. Jiang, you have a comminuted fracture of the spine, and your lower body is completely paralyzed. You may never be able to stand again." The middle-aged doctor, wearing a white coat, said with slight regret.

Standing behind him were people from the Municipal Inspection Bureau, dressed in blue uniforms.

Jiang Yan was completely wrapped in bandages, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.

After a moment, he slowly looked at the doctor and asked with hope in his eyes, "How are my mother and sister?"

The middle-aged doctor did not speak, merely shook his head and walked out of the ward. The Inspector beside him stepped forward.

Holding a white piece of paper, he spoke expressionlessly: "Jiang Yan, I regret to inform you that your mother and sister could not be saved. Their ashes have been placed in the hospital morgue. We hope you can cope. As for the rest, we are currently following procedures to sanction the perpetrator, Song Qing."

Jiang Yan looked at the Inspector, his eyes filled with deep hatred: "Your Excellency Inspector, my family is gone, they are all gone."

As he spoke, his emotions grew more agitated. He looked at the Inspector and pleaded in the loudest voice possible: "Please, you must seek justice for my mother and sister!"

Jiang Yan's father had died young, and his mother raised him and his sister. He had just managed to graduate and find work, hoping to make his mother's life easier, when this incident occurred.

The Inspector looked at Jiang Yan's posture, unmoved. He had seen too many such cases: "The court session is scheduled for two days from now. Given your injuries, you are unfit to attend. We will notify you of the results then."

After speaking, he walked straight out. Just as he stepped outside the door, he saw a man with a slicked-back hairstyle wearing a black suit.

"Hello, Inspector Wang." The Slicked-back Man greeted the law enforcement officer.

Inspector Wang nodded at him upon seeing this: "Don't provoke him."

"I understand." The Slicked-back Man showed a forced smile and walked toward the ward.

Inside the ward, the Slicked-back Man walked in. He looked at the stunned Mr. Jiang and began: "Mr. Jiang, I regret that this has happened to you.

But the dead cannot be brought back to life. If you sign the Letter of Understanding, my master is willing to cover all of Mr. Jiang's treatment expenses and compensate you with ten million blue star coins."

"Get out!" Jiang Yan heard this and glared intensely at him.

The Slicked-back Man continued to smile as if he hadn't heard: "Mr. Jiang, think carefully. This is ten million blue star coins. As long as you sign the Letter of Understanding, you can live the rest of your life comfortably."

"I told you to get lost!" Jiang Yan's voice suddenly rose, and anger appeared on his face.

Seeing this, the Slicked-back Man's smile instantly vanished, and he sneered: "You don't think I'm begging you, do you? We're only compensating you this much because we pity you. Do you have any idea how powerful the entity behind this is?"

Jiang Yan's eyes were bloodshot. Ignoring the intense pain in his body, he picked up a glass cup from the nearby table and threw it.

Seeing the glass cup flying toward him, the Slicked-back Man's expression changed, and he quickly dodged.

Bang! The cup hit the floor and shattered, sending glass shards flying.

The Slicked-back Man looked at Jiang Yan with a grim expression, speaking as he walked out of the ward: "You don't appreciate kindness. You are just an ordinary person. Since you won't accept, you'll suffer the consequences!"

Soon, only Jiang Yan remained in the ward, staring lonely at the ceiling.

The next day, the day of the official court hearing quickly arrived. Jiang Yan lay in the ward, awaiting the result.

Knock knock knock! A series of knocks came from outside the ward, and then Inspector Wang, who had been there before, walked in.

Jiang Yan looked at him and asked somewhat excitedly: "Your Excellency Inspector, what was the result? Was he brought to justice?"

As a graduate of Law University, he knew that drunk driving resulting in death in Nanwu Country was punishable by death.

However, facing his anticipation, Inspector Wang showed an expression of helplessness this time: "Jiang Yan, I hope you won't get too agitated by what I'm about to say."

Before Jiang Yan could react, Inspector Wang handed him a white paper document, then spoke.

"The court declared Song Qing not guilty and released him immediately. However, out of humanitarian concern, the Song Family will cover twenty percent of your treatment costs; you must bear the rest."

Jiang Yan's mind was reeling at this moment. He didn't hear anything Inspector Wang said next, because on the document, he saw it stated that the pedestrian had run a red light and the red sports car was driving normally.

But there was no red light at the scene of the incident at all.

"Why is this happening, Your Excellency Inspector? Why? You know the other party was drunk driving!" Jiang Yan said, looking at Inspector Wang with agitation.

Inspector Wang merely advised: "The other party is the Song Family, not someone an ordinary person like you can sue. That's how it is. I have other matters, I need to leave."

Saying this, he turned and left.

Only Jiang Yan was left lying in bed. He knew the Song Family; they were notorious tyrants in HQ City.

Thinking of this, Jiang Yan's face showed despair, and he muttered: "The Song Family, the damned Song Family. Mom, Little Sister, I wish I could avenge you."

He lay in bed, helplessly staring at the ceiling. What could he change in this situation? As a cripple, even the authorities wouldn't help him anymore.

Outside the ward, two on-duty nurses watched the departing Inspector and whispered gossip: "The patient in 205 is so miserable. I heard he was hit by a bigshot, and he can't do anything about them."

"I heard the one who hit him was Young Master Song. They are also preparing for the Municipal Chamber of Commerce and aren't affected at all," another gossiping voice drifted into the ward.

These voices, combined with the verdict, intensely stimulated Jiang Yan's nerves.

"Why is this happening! Why! Is there really no one who can punish them! Mom, Little Sister, I'm so tired!" Jiang Yan felt his breathing slow down, and his heart rate also began to decrease.

He even began to hallucinate: a Completely Black Figure stood beside him, quietly watching him.
