RAT-TAT-TAT—!
The burst of gunfire drowned the low hum of engines.
From the window, Lucille and Arthur could see soldiers moving cautiously while raising their rifles. They cleared one house after another, including the streets and other possible hiding places.
The father and daughter waited in silence, hearts pounding rapidly against their ribs. They believed the other survivors were also the same, as they waited to be evacuated.
Without them realizing it, over an hour had passed.
More zombies lay motionless on the streets; some were even hanging from the gates. The air was thickened with the foul scent of their rotten blood.
The sight was grotesque, hard for people who had been living in a peaceful environment to accept. They were different from soldiers who had fought against the enemies as they guarded their homeland.
In another fifteen minutes, the next announcement came. The same voice boomed through the loudspeaker, clear and commanding.
