Weijie, however, didn't say anything.

He stood behind her, his presence like a cooling shadow against the heat of the afternoon.

His sharp golden eyes weren't looking at Jaren. They were fixed entirely on the back of Ningning's head.

Unlike the other men, Weijie wasn't easily blinded. He had been standing right there.

His senses were far too keen to miss the subtle flick of her wrist or the way she had shielded Jaren's face from view.

He had even caught the faint metallic scent of the liquid she had forced into the dying man's mouth.

He knew there was no god involved in those drops.

But as he watched the way Numa and the others looked at her—with a dangerous kind of worship—he realized it wasn't safe for her to tell the truth.

"The Human God has answered," Weijie said suddenly, his deep voice slicing through the murmurs and ending the interrogation.

He stepped forward, his large hand sliding possessively around Ningning's waist, pulling her back against his chest.
