Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20-THE PRICE OF CHOOSING

Aham did not scream.

He did not curse.

He did not break.

He stood in the middle of the empty street where Clara had been taken, fists clenched at his sides, breathing slow and controlled—as if control were the only thing holding the world together.

Jane Smith watched him carefully.

"This is what Victor Hale does," she said quietly. "He provokes desperation."

Aham turned to her, eyes dark.

"Then I'll give him calculation."

Clara woke to darkness.

Her wrists were bound—but not tightly. Her captor wanted her conscious. A low hum of machinery vibrated through the floor. Underground, she guessed.

Victor Hale's voice echoed from somewhere unseen.

"You should be afraid."

"I am," Clara replied calmly. "Just not of you."

He laughed. "Good. Fear ruins clarity."

A door opened. Light spilled in.

Victor stepped forward.

"Let's talk about Aham."

Aham sat before a wall of maps, blueprints, and live surveillance feeds.

Jane slid a folder toward him.

"This is Victor Hale's network," she said. "Private contractors. Clean hands. No loyalty."

Aham flipped it open.

"And Clara?"

Jane hesitated.

"We don't know where she is yet."

Aham closed the folder slowly.

"Then we change the rules."

Victor poured tea like they were old friends.

"You love him," he said to Clara.

"Yes."

"That's unfortunate."

She met his gaze. "For you."

Victor smiled thinly. "You think he won't bend."

"I know he won't break."

Victor leaned closer. "Everyone breaks."

Aham made his call.

"I want Don Pedro transferred."

Jane stiffened. "Why?"

"Because Victor wants leverage," Aham replied. "And Don Pedro is still useful."

Jane studied him. "This will cost you."

"I'm already paying."

Clara's mind drifted.

The orphanage.

The night the power failed.

The boy who held her hand.

The man who survived prison without losing himself.

Victor watched her closely.

"You never told him, did you?"

Clara swallowed. "No."

Victor's smile sharpened. "Good. Secrets rot relationships."

Aham stood inside Don Pedro's cell.

The man looked smaller now. Thinner.

"You came," Don Pedro said mockingly.

"I need Victor Hale."

Don Pedro laughed. "He never needed me."

"Then help me find him," Aham said. "Or rot forgotten."

Don Pedro's eyes flickered.

"Victor wants to erase you," he said. "But first—he wants to see what you'll trade."

Victor's voice crackled over a speaker.

"Aham Armstrong. You want her back?"

Aham didn't hesitate. "Name your price."

"Meet me," Victor replied. "Alone."

Jane shook her head.

Aham raised a hand. "I know."

Clara's heart pounded as the door opened again.

Victor stood there, thoughtful.

"He's coming," he said.

She straightened. "Then this ends."

Victor chuckled. "It begins."

As Aham prepared to leave, Jane grabbed his arm.

"There's something you should know."

"What?"

"Clara refused a deal like this years ago."

Aham frowned.

"Victor approached her," Jane continued. "Offered power. Safety. If she walked away from you."

Aham's chest tightened.

"And she refused?"

Jane nodded. "Without hesitation."

In the underground facility, Clara closed her eyes.

She remembered the truth she never shared.

The file she destroyed.

The evidence that could have ended Victor Hale years ago.

Her secret was about to surface.

And this time—

It might cost her everything.
