Just a second—something flickered in his eyes.
"Asher Quinn-Park," Kael read from a file on his desk,"Executive assistant in marketing. You've been with the company for... just over a year?"
"Yes, sir." Asher said.
"Please, have a seat." Kael gestured to the chair across from his desk.
Asher sat, keeping his spine straight, his expression neutral.
Kael studied the file for a moment longer. "Excellent performance reviews. Your supervisor speaks very highly of you."
"Thank you, sir."
"And before this, you were in... education? You have a degree in teaching?"
"Yes, sir."
"Why switch to corporate work?"
Because I have two children to support and teaching doesn't pay enough.
"I wanted a new challenge," Asher said instead. "And the benefits here are excellent."
"Family?" Kael asked, and Asher's heart stopped.
"I'm sorry?"
"You mentioned benefits. Do you have a family? Partner? Children?"
There was something in Kael's tone—something that made Asher wonder if he suspected.
