Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 - First Close Encounter

The next morning, Lupine Academy was alive with movement. The sun hadn't fully risen, but students were already gathering in the training grounds. Daniel adjusted his uniform and took a deep breath. Another day, another layer of acting as an alpha. He flexed his fingers subtly, feeling the small surge of strength that came from his hidden omega traits enhanced by his secret methods. Every step had to be precise; every glance measured. One mistake and everything—his facade, his safety, his carefully built reputation—could crumble.

"Daniel," a voice purred behind him. He turned sharply to see Leo, leaning casually against the wall, arms crossed, amber eyes gleaming with unreadable emotion. The smirk that had unnerved him yesterday was back, only more confident, more daring.

"You're early," Daniel said carefully, masking the rush of awareness in his chest.

"I like watching how others start their day," Leo replied smoothly. His gaze swept over Daniel, not in judgment this time, but like he was observing a puzzle he couldn't yet solve. "Especially when they try so hard to look… untouchable."

Daniel's stomach twisted, a mixture of irritation and something dangerously close to curiosity. "I'm just focused on training," he replied evenly.

Leo's smirk deepened. "Focused, or pretending? I've learned to see the difference."

The subtle threat sent a shiver down Daniel's spine. Not fear, exactly—something more intense, an adrenaline rush that reminded him why he had to keep perfect control of every move. Yet… he couldn't stop the strange pull he felt. The pull of Leo's presence, his intensity, his power.

The day's exercises were challenging. Students were paired for combat drills, meant to test reflexes, strategy, and adaptability. Fate—or perhaps the academy's twisted sense of humor—paired Daniel with Leo once again.

"Looks like we're together again," Leo said casually, as if it were a coincidence. Daniel felt a flush rise to his cheeks but forced himself to meet Leo's gaze calmly.

They moved through the exercises with precision. Each time their bodies brushed, Daniel felt his pulse spike. A touch on the shoulder, a nudge in the side, accidental—yet electric. Each movement carried tension that was not only competitive but… intimate. Leo's smirk hinted he knew, or at least sensed, more than Daniel dared to reveal.

At one point, Daniel stumbled slightly during a particularly complex maneuver. Leo's hand shot out to steady him, their fingers brushing in the faintest contact. Daniel's chest fluttered, though he kept his face neutral. "Thank you," he muttered, barely above his own breath.

"You're welcome," Leo replied, voice low, almost teasing. "But watch yourself. You wouldn't want to make mistakes in front of me… would you?"

Daniel's mind raced. Was this a threat? A tease? Or… something else? His omega instincts, buried and controlled, stirred faintly, sending a rush of heat and awareness that made his controlled facade tremble just a little. He straightened his shoulders and continued the drill, fighting to maintain composure.

Later, during a break, Daniel retreated to the edge of the courtyard, attempting to calm his racing thoughts. The adrenaline of the exercises, combined with the constant awareness of Leo's gaze, left him tense and breathless. A shadow fell across him. He looked up to see Leo, casually leaning against a tree, eyes studying him with a mix of amusement and curiosity.

"You're hiding something," Leo said quietly, almost as a statement rather than a question. "I can tell."

Daniel's breath caught. No one had ever come this close to reading him so quickly, so accurately. "I'm not hiding anything," he said evenly, though his pulse betrayed him.

Leo tilted his head, the smirk never leaving his face. "Keep telling yourself that."

Daniel felt a strange thrill, the combination of danger and excitement curling inside him. The day stretched on, filled with subtle glances, brushes of contact, and tension that was neither fully hostile nor fully friendly. By the time classes ended, he was exhausted—not from physical exertion, but from the constant mental and emotional vigilance required to keep his secret, maintain his facade, and endure the magnetic pull of Leo's presence.

As he lay on his bed that evening, replaying the day's encounters, Daniel felt a shift he didn't quite understand. He had survived the exercises, maintained his secret, and even impressed some of the instructors—but for the first time, he found himself thinking not only about survival… but about Leo.

And with that thought came a realization he could neither deny nor ignore: the rivalry was no longer just about strength, about school, about rank. Something more dangerous, more intoxicating, and far more complicated had begun.
