Chapter 10 - The Void

"Did you not hear me? Come on buddy don't be shy, show me what ya got there."

The man walking behind him put himself in front of Sebastian and flashed his knife.

Seeing sparked hatred in Sebastian, he didn't wait for the guy to finish his spiel before he took off his hood and lifted his face from the ground.

The man went pale and tried to run, he had heard the story about Fuse and seeing someone without a face, he immediately knew what was going to happen to him.

"You're in constant agonizing pain."

Sebastian's voice came out distorted, it sounded as if a voice filter was built into his vocal chords.

He was taken aback by the unforeseen change but was ultimately glad.

Sebastian's thoughts were interrupted by the voice of the man who began writhing on the floor, begging for his life.

"Is this how pathetic all of you are? You truly are worthless.

"Quit being a baby and hand me your phone, I'm waiting."

Still in agony, the man reached for his pocket and handed over his phone to Sebastian.

"Unlock this for me, don't tell me I have to spell everything out for you? No wonder you have to commit crime to live, you're fucking uselesss."

Sebastian grew irritated when he saw that his gloves couldn't use the touchscreen so knelt down and took the man's hand by force then grabbed his finger to use his phone with.

"Yeah I'm just gonna use this real quick, sorry."

The flashlight went on and Sebastian

pointed the camera to his nonexistent face, then at the man on the floor before beginning to speak.

"You see this sad pile of worthless nothing? The little whining pig thought he was tough, look where he is now. He's just one of the many low lives that are going to end up with the same fate. Have fun y'all."

Sebastian looked at the video and wondered if his face could still be seen in it if he stopped using his power.

"You can't see." He said to the man.

The criminal on the floor wasn't even screaming, he was just muttering words to himself that Sebastian deemed too meaningless to bother listening to.

Sebastian removed the void from his face and checked the video again, he was glad to see that even without him having his ability active, the void was still visible in the video.

"Can't really be too safe with this." He thought, trying to rationalize his paranoia.

He activated his ability again and gave the man his vision back after thinking it through for a couple of minutes.

Sebastian went through the man's phone and saw some group chats. They were clearly other criminals in them.

It couldn't be seen by anyone but Sebastian smiled.

"Who are all these people? Yikes, man they all have these suspicious looking names." He taunted the criminal, "It'd be a shame if someone would send this video to these group chats."

"Sorry, man, your finger slipped, next time be more careful." He said after sending the video to all of the group chats.

Sebastian then posted to all of the man's social media as well.

He stood up and strongly threw the man's phone to his face.

"Call the police yourself, I doubt they'll stop the pain though."

Then Sebstian vanished, he felt fulfilled with himself, so much so that he could peacefully go to sleep for the night.

Sebastian woke up and bolted towards his T.V, eager to see the news. As he expected, the news was covering the events of the earlier night, and the videos he posted went viral everywhere.

"A faceless vigilante torturing criminals." Said the news headline.

Sebastian felt insulted by it but couldn't object, that was exactly what he was doing after all.

Sebastian checked his phone and saw dozens of missed calls from his friends. He ignored all of them and was more interested in what people online had to say about him.

Before he could open up anything, he was surprised to hear from his T.V that the news had a witness testimony from the criminal himself, also saying that the criminal was still enduring immense pain all over his body, regardless of how much medical assistance he got.

"All he does and they still try to help that bastard. Crazy world we live in." Sebastian whispered.

The anchor spoke and said the vigilante in the video was able to put the man in the state in a way that couldn't be described other than magic, he also said the vigilante was able to make the criminal go blind and give him his sight back at will. The anchor was getting more and more visibly nervous as he read from the script.

The anchor, now with a slightly pale face, ended off by saying that the vigilante, after finishing his work, disappeared into thin air, leaving no trace of himself behind.

Satisfied that the outcome he'd expected had come true, Sebastian took to social media, just to find that not only did the video go viral, everyone everywhere was talking about him.

Sebastian had expected some people to talk but not to the scale as they were.

"Well they are discovering that the supernatural exists and that someone with powers is going after criminals." Sebastian thought.

He wasn't surprised that had correlated him to the previous incident, but was however at how he was being reffered as.

On the side of people against Sebastian, the names they called him ranged from demon, monster, psychopath and even the devil himself.

On the side of the people supporting him we was praised as a hero, a savior and justice for criminals.

Another surprise to Sebastian was that he noticed the people were more inclined to his side this time around, it was still divided but he was sure there were more positive comments.

Despite all the names everyone called Sebastian, a lot of people seemed to agree on a single one: The Void.

Sebastian took a liking to that name.

Pleased with the consecuences of his actions, Sebastian went outside to take a walk.

The day was sunny, bright and the plants seemed greener than usual.

Sebastian walked around the city and found himself at a park. Tired from walking, he sat down on a bench and looked at the people walking by, wondering what mysteries their lives held.

He was at that moment the most talked about person in the world yet everyone who passed by him didn't even bat an eye.

A certain sadness filled his heart as those thoughts ran through his mind.

Sebastian started to feel disgusted at the sight of people, the more he looked at them the emptier he felt.

He looked at the sky with a forced, empty smile then walked back home, not wanting to be around anyone.

Night fell once more and that emptiness remained within Sebastian, he didn't feel the need to go after criminals, the mere thought of it made his body heavy.

Sebastian sat in his living room with his head down, then wondered if he could turn his entire body into void just as he did with his face. He tried it and he was shocked to see the results.

The white and grey clothes he wore at that moment turned pitch black just as the rest of his body, not only that but they radiated that same void-filled flame effect as the back of his head.

Sebastian welcomed the surprise, relieved that he didn't have to worry about reusing his dark clothes anymore.

He vanished from the living room and reappeared somewhere far away, somewhere he found peace in.

Naples, a city in Italy, is where he went, looking at the waves of the ocean he stood silently while standing atop a castle built on the water, separated from the city.

Sebastian had visited that place before, many years ago, it spoke out to him, it brought him peace and always wanted to come back there, however not having the time to do so.

On the very top of the castle in the ocean, stood the man made of nothingness with nothing in his heart, seeking solace in the familiar emptiness of the vast sea that he could never understand.

Sebastian stood for hours, marvelling at the sea of a place he was never expecting to be back in, grateful at the opportunity he was given despite costing him his life in the future.

He found it ironic that the most powerful single individual in the entire planet could be so fragile on the inside, as if a mild wind could shatter him at any moment.

Sebastian felt truly pathetic at that moment, wanting to save the entire world but not being able to save himself.

Morning came a lot quicker than he expected, and not wanting to be seen, he left the castle, promising himself he'd be back some day.

Back in his living room, it was still night time, he didn't mind however, seeing the night sky once again felt like a blessing.

"This precious thing that everyone is forced to value, I'll make it worth the pain and struggle. Screw living in a cramped, empty room for eternity, I'd rather live for a fleeting instant than have to survive forever."

The void covering his body disappeared, and with a now visible and true smile he spoke,

"I promise."
