Chapter 26 - Chapter 26

Morning light barely penetrated the thick haze hanging over the city as Kaelen prepared for the next Guild mission.

The briefing board had been updated overnight, stamped F-rank but flagged for danger. It involved a rare plant known as the Crimson Thornroot, its black, jagged petals secreting a venom that could paralyze within seconds.

The Guild promised a high bounty for intact specimens, though previous teams had rarely returned.

Kaelen's hands tightened around his laser rifle as he studied the map. SC hovered beside him, projecting topography and energy field overlays onto a translucent holo-screen.

"This mission is riskier than the rating suggests," SC said quietly. "Crimson Thornroots grow in zones with unstable curse concentrations. The plants feed on ambient energy, and teams rarely survive to collect them."

Kaelen exhaled, forcing himself to remain calm despite the lingering dark mist that clung to his wound from the previous mission.

"We do it anyway. I need more information about the Forbidden City, the Foundry, and the cursed zones. The Guild is our only source of intel inside the system."

SC's projection flickered. "Agreed. But your body cannot tolerate extended exposure. One misstep and the curse will consume what remains of you."

Kaelen's jaw tightened. 'Every mission is a test, every step could be my last. I cannot hesitate and not with the son out there, not with the Foundry waiting. I will survive. I have to'

By midday, they left the city walls, blending with other adventurers as they crossed into the industrial forests where the Crimson Thornroots grew.

The Guild operated like a silent web here, where everyone moved with purpose, scanning for danger while speaking in clipped, coded dialogue. Kaelen stuck close to a small team of three, pretending to be a novice.

"You two first timers?" one of them, a stocky man named Jaro, asked, smirking as he adjusted his harness.

Kaelen's lips pressed together. "Something like that," he replied evenly.

Jaro glanced at SC, eyes narrowing. "You always stick to your partner? Weak teams split fast."

SC's voice was calm, deliberate. "We operate efficiently." The quiet authority carried weight even Jaro could not challenge.

As they advanced, the environment became twisted. Thorn-covered vines clawed at broken steel beams. Pools of dark water reflected the gray-green sky, shifting unnaturally with residual curse energy. Kaelen's steps were deliberate, every sense alert.

The first encounter came almost immediately. A creature lunged from the undergrowth, a hybrid of crocodile and dinosaur, its bioluminescent scales shimmering faintly. It moved with terrifying speed, jaws snapping.

Kaelen reacted instantly, raising the rifle and firing a concentrated beam that scorched the creature mid-lunge. It rolled aside, tail whipping dangerously.

"Cover me!" Kaelen shouted, dodging a sweeping strike.

SC activated a mini shield projection, deflecting the tail with a pulse of low energy. "Weak point under the flank. Go low, and aim for the limb junctions."

Crouching, Kaelen let instinct guide him, firing rapid bursts with precision. The creature roared as sparks erupted from its joints, and around him, the team fought, but Kaelen's coordination kept them alive.

The dark mist around his wound thickened, curling as if sensing the danger. He gritted his teeth, forcing it back as best he could.

The hybrid finally collapsed, letting out a final, distorted screech. SC rushed to scan him. "Your wound is reacting to the cursed energy in the area. Stabilization required immediately and failing will cause worsen results even dying."

Kaelen's thoughts spun with urgency and frustration. ' I cannot collapse. Every second wasted is information lost, and I have to move forward be for the son, for my family, for my father, for every life this cursed system destroys.'

He applied the limited stabilizer SC carried, feeling the burn as the serum sank into his wound. The dark mist receded, leaving only a dull ache, a warning of the curse's persistent presence.

Deeper into the sector, the Crimson Thornroots appeared in small clusters, their petals like jagged obsidian. SC projected the toxin's molecular structure, warning him of contact. Kaelen harvested the plants carefully, slicing stems with his laser and avoiding the lethal thorns.

His mind was half on the Guild's networks, half on tracking whispers of the Forbidden City, half on locating the son. Every action was measured, every decision weighed against catastrophe.

Resistance came again. A grotesque hybrid emerged, a fusion of bear and lizard, six spindly insect-like limbs, maw filled with jagged teeth. Its roar shattered the stillness. Kaelen's pulse spiked. This was not a creature. It was an experiment.

"Form a perimeter," he shouted. "SC, mark weak points and direct the fire."

Coordinates flickered in SC's projection. "Exposed flank at sixty degrees. Timing critical."

Kaelen fired beam after beam, dodging massive claws, tail strikes, and snapping jaws. Pain coursed through his wound as dark mist swirled around him.

He forced himself forward, each step a test of endurance and control. 'I cannot let it escape. Every experiment, every hybrid, is a clue to the Foundry. Every second counts.'

He leapt onto a broken girder, sliding and firing a concentrated beam into the creature's spine. Sparks flew. The hybrid thrashed violently before collapsing, and SC projected a containment net, immobilizing it further.

Kaelen sank to his knees, blood seeping from his mouth. A sudden pulse of pain ripped through him.

"Kaelen!" SC shouted. "Spiritual stabilizer required now! If you do not administer it, your wound will never heal. Exposure threshold exceeded. Fatal collapse imminent."

Kaelen swallowed, forcing himself upright. ' I cannot fail. I cannot die here. Not with the son waiting. Not with the Foundry ahead.'

He applied the stabilizer, hissing as the serum burned, but the dark mist finally receded enough to regain partial control. Weakness gnawed at him, but clarity returned.

The team gathered silently. Jaro muttered, "You're not like the rest of us."

Kaelen's thoughts drifted briefly. 'Not like the rest, yes. Trained, cursed, carrying the Empire's sins inside me. Every mission proves it.'

SC projected their path forward. "Extraction point remains clear. Continue."

Kaelen gritted his teeth, moving again. Every shadow, every movement, every stray pulse of energy could signal danger be from rogue adventurers to hybrid experiments. Every second was a gamble, but every second mattered.

The final Crimson Thornroots glinted ominously in fading light. A low growl reverberated through the air. Kaelen froze. This was no ordinary hybrid.

A massive fusion of wolf, scorpion, and reptile lunged. Its tail whipped like a bludgeon, limbs scraping metal. Kaelen dodged, fired into its chest, rolled, and struck the flank. Sparks and dust flew with every shot.

His wound throbbed violently, dark mist curling around him like a living thing. Each strike sapped his strength.

The creature finally collapsed. Kaelen dropped to his knees, blood still dripping. SC moved to stabilize him, projecting an emergency field.

"You've been exposed too long," SC said. "The curse has latched deeper. Without constant care, recovery is impossible. One more exposure could be fatal."

Kaelen exhaled, trembling, but already moving forward mentally. This is only one mission.

Only one test. The Guild, the hybrids, the Forbidden City, the son, the Foundry with every step reveals something new. I cannot stop now.

He looked at the harvested Crimson Thornroots, petals glinting like black blades. The mission was technically a success, but Kaelen knew the price had been near-fatal. The curse, the hybrids, and the Guild's cruel experiments were far from over.

As they began the trek back to the Guild, Kaelen's thoughts churned. Every mission is a lesson. Every experiment is a clue. Every curse pulse is a warning. I will find the Foundry.

I will survive. And I will find the son.

SC hovered beside him silently, projecting maps, scanning for danger. Together, they moved onward, one step closer to the truth, one step closer to the confrontation that would reveal everything.

The curse whispered in his veins, reminding him that survival was never guaranteed. Kaelen would endure. Some truths, no matter how deadly, demanded discovery.
