"Now, let's try this again, You followed me. Why?"

Damian was waiting for her answer. His question hung in the air between them, carried on the wind that tugged at his dark cloak.

Selene forced her voice to stay steady. "I wanted to ensure you were safe, Your Majesty."

It sounded weak even to her own ears. Why would a servant worry about the King's safety when he'd just stepped away from a feast? When he was surrounded by guards and protected by castle walls?

Damian laughed. The sound was bitter. Tired. Nothing like the polite amusement he showed the court.
