Selene sat on the floor of Damian's chambers, trembling, her entire world shattered into pieces she didn't know how to reassemble.
The mate bond was real. Undeniable. Absolute.
And she had no idea what to do about it.
The alarm bells were still ringing. Distant now but urgent. Whatever emergency had called Damian away was serious enough that the entire castle was being alerted.
Selene should stay here. He'd commanded her to stay. And disobeying a direct order from the Alpha King was grounds for punishment.
But she couldn't. Couldn't stay in this room where the bond had snapped into place. Couldn't face him when he returned. Couldn't pretend everything was normal when her entire existence had just been turned inside out.
She had to get out. Had to run. Had to put distance between herself and him before she did something catastrophic like confess everything or collapse completely or let the bond take over her mind.
