Chapter 26 - A Fortress Untouched by Fear

David and Thalassa sat in the back of the sleek escort vehicle, the hum of its engine soft and almost melodic. On Thalassa's lap lay a small tiger—Rea, now in a compact form—purring lazily as she scratched behind his ears. His tail flicked back and forth, brushing against her arm.

Outside the window, the last remnants of the military camp slipped past them. Even within Minerva's walls, the camp was a fortress of its own: towering barricades reinforced with shimmering shield-runes, multi-layered energy nets pulsing above, and armored soldiers moving in synchronized precision.

Thalassa's eyes widened as she took in the strange devices stationed around the camp—spherical sentry orbs floating silently along magnetic rails, mechs shaped like winged lizards perched atop watchtowers, and massive cannons whose barrels glowed with arcane circuitry.

Then the vehicle crossed the last military checkpoint.

And the world shifted.

The moment they passed beyond the last military barrier, Thalassa felt her breath catch.

It was like stepping into a dream.

Towering skyscrapers rose on every side—glass, steel, and flowing streams of blue energy threaded between them like glowing veins. Holographic billboards hovered in the air, advertising everything from levitating fashion accessories to artificial-gravity gyms. Streets were bright with neon and lantern-light, casting reflections across the smooth, metallic roads.

Even though it was late into the night, the city pulsed with life.

People walked freely under the lights—laughing, chatting, flirting. Young adults danced in open plazas where music floated from mid-air sound projectors. Families strolled with glowing balloons tethered to wrist devices. Groups of workers relaxed outside restaurants, drinking and sharing stories after a long day.

Hoverbikes zipped overhead.

Patrolling officers walked calmly with two companions: a hovering drone trailing blue light, and a robotic canine that scanned the crowd with gentle, rhythmic beeps.

Not a hint of fear existed here.

Not a whisper of the terror beyond the walls.

Thalassa pressed her hands against the glass, overwhelmed.

"This is…" she whispered, with a look of bewilderment.

David glanced at her, his expression unreadable.

"I'm sure you're pondering why this place feels like a slice of paradise," he murmured, his gaze trailing over the young lady's astonished expression. The vibrant colors of the blooming city and the gentle rustle of the clean air surrounded them, a stark contrast to the austere walls of the citadel they had departed—two locations of equal rank and status, yet worlds apart in their atmosphere and beauty.

He leaned back, crimson eyes reflecting the passing lights.

"I'm sure you've noticed this place sits farthest from the influence of the zombies." His voice hardened, calm but edged with bitterness. "So the old goats who think themselves gods settle here. They take the safest ground and the best resources for themselves."

Rea's ears twitched, and even the butler—sitting in the front beside the driver—shifted slightly, though he said nothing.

"They hoard the opulence," David stated, his voice maintaining a serene and measured tone, devoid of any trace of anger. It sounded almost as if he were merely recounting an undeniable truth.

"While the rest of the world finds itself grappling for scraps to survive. Minerva may be adorned with the title of a 'Great Citadel,' but in reality, it functions as a bastion for the elite, shielding their wealth and privilege behind high walls, leaving the less fortunate to fend for themselves in the shadows outside."

It pretends to be a beacon of hope, yet rarely extends its gates to those seeking refuge. The few refugees that manage to arrive here are often met with cold indifference."

Thalassa looked at him, seeing not anger on his face… but a quiet, buried pain. The kind that didn't scream—it simply existed, carved deep.

A tumult of words danced in her mind, each one clamoring for release, but after a brief pause for contemplation, she chose to quiet the storm within. With a gentle sigh, she redirected her attention to the vast expanse of the city before her.

Skyscrapers thrust into the sky like giants, their glass facades reflecting the sunlight, while the streets below pulsed with the vibrant energy of life.

The distant hum of traffic and the faint sounds of chatter floated up to her, momentarily distracting her from the chaos of thoughts swirling in her head.

The dusky twilight cast a gentle luminescence across the buildings, their outlines softened in the warm glow. As the city lights began to twinkle like stars on the horizon, she let the tranquil radiance envelop her, momentarily embracing the beauty of the scene around her.

As they traveled deeper, the crowds thinned, giving way to a different kind of wonder. The outer city buzzed with life—but the inner city shimmered with refinement and wonders.

In this extraordinary realm, the architecture defied the laws of physics, with buildings twisting and curling into breathtaking, fluid forms that seemed to sway gently as if caught in an unseen breeze.

Their surfaces were a mesmerizing tapestry of intricate layers, adorned with glowing runes that flickered and shifted in an ever-changing dance, reminiscent of a living constellation illuminating the night.

Enchanted gardens floated gracefully in the air, a spectacle of vibrant flora that thrived in defiance of gravity. Each blossom and leaf was cradled by delicate chains of ethereal light, shimmering and sparkling like a scattering of stars, casting enchanting reflections against the backdrop of the deep, velvety sky.

The whole scene was a surreal masterpiece, where nature and magic intertwined in a breathtaking display of beauty and wonder.

Silver walkways elongated gracefully and curved smoothly into place as if anticipating the presence of passersby, inviting them to explore further.

Meanwhile, waterfalls defied gravity, cascading upward in mesmerizing arcs of shimmering water that glistened in the sunlight, creating a breathtaking spectacle as they climbed the walls, defying all conventions of nature.

This was not just advanced.

It was art.

Soon, the vehicle slowed as they approached a massive gate framed by golden glyphs. Beyond it lay sprawling gardens lit by soft blue lanterns, with trees whose leaves glowed faintly in the dark.

The escort rolled forward, stopping before a mansion that seemed carved from starlight—white stone, crystalline windows, and an aura of quiet majesty.

The butler stepped out first. Then proceeded to open the door.

Thalassa followed, and Rea shimmered into a larger form as he hopped to the ground, stretching lazily.

David emerged last, the night breeze stirring his coat.

The butler bowed. "Welcome home, young master."
