Chapter 42 - The Hall of whispers

Chapter 19: The Hall of Whispers

The air inside the High City's secret tunnels was sterile and freezing, a sharp contrast to the wild, pine-scented wind of Redpaveley. Drayan led Wolfie through the dark, his powerful muscles tensed as he navigated the labyrinthine corridors he had memorized as a child.

"Something is wrong," Wolfie whispered, her hand gripping the hilt of her bone-dagger. "It's too quiet. Even for a tomb."

Drayan didn't answer. He reached a massive, obsidian door etched with the Drac family crest. To open it, he had to press his palm against a bed of silver needles. The "Blood Key" was a sacrifice. He hissed as the needles pierced his skin, draining his essence to power the ancient mechanism.

As the door ground open, a thick, violet mist poured out, swallowing them both.

The Trap of the High Council

Suddenly, the ground seemed to vanish. Drayan reached for Wolfie, but his hand passed through her as if she were made of smoke.

"Wolfie!" he roared, his voice echoing in a void.

He wasn't in a tunnel anymore. He was in a distorted version of the Academy courtyard. He saw Wolfie standing by the Great Oak, but she wasn't looking for him. She was laughing, her arm linked with Marcus.

"He's finally gone, Marcus," the illusion-Wolfie said, her voice dripping with a cruelty that made Drayan's heart stop. "The City Boy actually thought I loved him. He was just a tool to keep the pack safe. Now that the City has taken him back, we can finally be together."

Drayan felt a surge of white-hot rage, but deeper than that was a paralyzing, icy hollow. His muscles felt heavy, as if his blood had turned to lead. He fell to one knee, the "Blood Key" sacrifice having already weakened his physical frame. He watched as the illusionary version of his wife burned his wedding ring in the campfire.

Wolfie's Vision

On the other side of the mist, Wolfie was trapped in her own nightmare. She saw Drayan sitting on a throne of bone and silk in the High City. Bianca was at his side, leaning her head on his muscular shoulder.

"The village was a charming distraction, wasn't it?" the illusion-Drayan said, his eyes cold and aristocratic. "But look at me, Wolfie. I am a King. Did you really think a creature of the mud could keep a Prince of the Night forever? You were a pet. A temporary heat. Now, go back to your dirt and leave me to my empire."

Wolfie snarled, lunging at the image, but her claws hit nothing but air. The illusion laughed, the sound vibrating in her skull, draining her of her strength. She felt small, ugly, and unwanted.

The Rebound of the Bond

The trap was working. The City was feeding on their insecurities, trying to make them "feeble" before the final vault. But the High Council had made one fatal mistake: they treated their bond like a human contract. They didn't realize that their blood was literally entwined.

Deep within his trance, Drayan felt a spark. It wasn't a thought; it was the scent of her. Not the sterile lavender of the illusion, but the scent of mountain rain, wolf musk, and the skin he had worshipped only hours before in the cave.

"No," Drayan growled, his voice cracking the illusionary sky. He stood up, his chest heaving, his muscles swelling with a renewed, violent energy. "She is my wife. She is my life. I don't care what my eyes see. I know her soul!"

He punched through the illusionary wall, the glass shattering into a thousand pieces. On the other side, he saw the real Wolfie, curled on the floor, sobbing as she fought her own demons.

"Wolfie!"

He threw himself across the gap, catching her in his arms. The moment their skin touched, the violet mist hissed and evaporated. The shared heat of their bond acted like a sun, burning away the Council's lies.

Wolfie looked up at him, her eyes clearing. She saw the sweat on his brow, the blood on his hand from the Key, and the raw, desperate love in his eyes.

"You... you didn't stay?" she whispered.

"I am never staying anywhere without you," Drayan vowed, pulling her up and crushing her against his hard chest.

Taking Back Everything

The weakness was gone. The "feeble" state the Council wanted had been replaced by a terrifying, unified fury. They hadn't just survived the trap; they had used it to fuel their fire.

"They tried to steal our memories," Wolfie said, her eyes turning a predatory amber. "They tried to make us doubt the only thing that matters."

Drayan picked up his black-steel blade, the muscles in his forearms bulging with a power that felt ancestral. "They wanted to see us broken. Now, they're going to see us finish this."

They reached the final doors of the Vault. Drayan didn't use the Key this time. He didn't ask for permission. He looked at Wolfie, and they moved as one—a blur of silver fur and vampire shadow.

"For the village," Wolfie roared.

"For us," Drayan echoed.

With a single, combined strike that shook the foundations of the High City, they blew the doors off the hinges. The Heart of the Sire sat in the center of the room, glowing with a sickly light. And standing before it was Vane and the High Council, their faces pale with shock.

They had expected two broken victims. Instead, they were facing the end of their world.
