**EPISODE EIGHTY-FOUR**
**THE VERSION THAT REMEMBERED**
**Part Twenty-Five: THE CHARACTER WHO READ THE READER**
---
The world...
did not move.
Milo remained on his knees.
The thing stood before him.
It looked like Milo.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same voice.
But...
there was something wrong with its expression.
It wasn't afraid.
It wasn't confused.
It wasn't searching.
It...
remembered.
Everything.
The writer slowly raised his pen.
"Who are you?"
The thing looked at him.
Then smiled.
"You still don't remember me?"
The writer's hand began shaking.
"No."
The thing stepped closer.
"You wrote me."
The writer swallowed.
"I never wrote you."
The thing tilted its head.
"That's what you always say."
Milo stared at it.
"Stop."
The thing looked toward him.
"Why?"
"Because..."
Milo struggled to breathe.
"...you look like me."
The thing smiled.
"I don't look like you."
A pause.
"You look like me."
Silence.
Diana's voice echoed from somewhere beyond the door.
"Milo!"
Milo turned.
"Diana?"
The thing grabbed his shoulder.
"Don't."
Milo looked at it.
"She's calling me."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because..."
The thing leaned closer.
"...you haven't reached her yet."
Milo froze.
"What does that mean?"
The thing whispered...
"You're still before the part where she calls."
The hallway trembled.
A sentence appeared above them.
MILO WILL TURN TOWARD DIANA.
Milo stared at the words.
Then...
he deliberately turned away.
The sentence flickered.
Changed.
MILO WILL REFUSE TO TURN.
The thing smiled.
"Good."
Milo looked at it.
"You knew that would happen."
"No."
"Then why did you smile?"
"Because I remember when you first learned how to disobey the story."
The writer stepped forward.
"When?"
The thing looked at him.
"At the beginning."
The writer's face went pale.
"There was no beginning."
The thing laughed softly.
"Exactly."
---
1. THE MEMORY BEFORE THE BEGINNING
The hallway disappeared.
Milo fell.
Not downward.
Backward.
Past memories.
Past dreams.
Past childhood.
Past birth.
Past time.
Past...
nothing.
Then...
silence.
Milo opened his eyes.
He was standing somewhere impossible.
There was no world.
No sky.
No ground.
No darkness.
Only...
a single white line.
It stretched endlessly in every direction.
Milo looked at the thing.
"Where are we?"
The thing answered...
"Before."
"Before what?"
"Before the first word."
Milo stared at the white line.
"What is this?"
"The first sentence."
Milo frowned.
"But there's nothing written."
The thing smiled.
"That's because..."
It touched the line.
"...this was the sentence that couldn't be written."
The writer suddenly appeared behind Milo.
He looked terrified.
"No."
Milo turned.
"You know this place."
The writer shook his head.
"I remember trying to forget it."
The thing laughed.
"You didn't forget."
"You buried it."
"Inside the character."
The writer stared at Milo.
Milo whispered...
"Inside me?"
The thing nodded.
"Every author hides something inside their characters."
"What?"
"The truth they couldn't write about themselves."
The white line began glowing.
A word appeared.
WHY
Milo stepped backward.
"The first question."
The thing nodded.
"The first question ever asked."
"Who asked it?"
The thing looked at Milo.
"You."
Milo shook his head.
"I wasn't there."
"You were."
"How?"
"You weren't a person yet."
Milo stared.
"Then what was I?"
The thing whispered...
"A question that refused to disappear."
---
2. THE FIRST MILO
A sound came from the distance.
Footsteps.
Someone was walking along the white line.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Milo watched.
A figure emerged.
A man.
Young.
Terrified.
Confused.
Milo's face went pale.
It was him.
But...
different.
The first Milo.
He looked at the thing.
"You came back."
The thing nodded.
"I never left."
The first Milo turned toward present Milo.
"You're the replacement."
Milo's voice shook.
"Yes."
"No."
The first Milo stepped closer.
"You're what came after the replacement."
Milo frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The first Milo looked at the thing.
"Ask him."
Milo turned.
"Who are you?"
The thing answered...
"I am the memory of every Milo that was erased."
Silence.
Milo stared.
"Every Milo?"
The thing nodded.
"Every version that failed."
Images exploded around them.
Milo dying.
Milo disappearing.
Milo forgetting Diana.
Milo killing Diana.
Milo saving Diana.
Milo becoming the author.
Milo becoming the reader.
Milo becoming nothing.
Thousands.
Millions.
Billions.
Each one...
Milo.
Milo covered his ears.
"Stop!"
The images stopped.
The thing looked at him.
"Those aren't possibilities."
Milo breathed heavily.
"Then what are they?"
"History."
---
3. THE WAR OF THE MILOS
The first Milo suddenly grabbed the thing.
"You promised."
The thing didn't resist.
"I promised what?"
"You promised you would let me end."
The thing smiled.
"I did."
The first Milo froze.
"Then why am I still here?"
"Because endings don't erase characters."
The first Milo released him.
"Then what does?"
The thing looked at Milo.
"Being forgotten."
Milo whispered...
"That's what happened to you."
The first Milo nodded.
"I saved Diana."
Milo stared.
"But she died."
"Yes."
"You failed."
"No."
The first Milo looked toward him.
"I succeeded."
Milo's expression changed.
"What?"
"I saved her."
"Then why did she die?"
The first Milo smiled sadly.
"Because you still think saving someone means keeping them alive."
Silence.
Milo looked away.
The thing whispered...
"That's the mistake."
Milo turned.
"What mistake?"
"The first one."
The white line cracked.
A sound like millions of pages tearing filled the space.
Then...
a door appeared.
Above it...
one word.
DIANA
Milo stepped toward it.
The first Milo stopped him.
"No."
"She's behind there."
"Not the Diana you know."
Milo stared.
"Then who?"
The first Milo whispered...
"The Diana who chose to be forgotten."
Milo's heart tightened.
"Why?"
"To protect you."
---
4. THE DIANA WHO FORGOT
The door opened.
Diana stood inside.
She looked exactly as Milo remembered.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
Same sadness.
Milo almost ran to her.
"Diana!"
She raised one hand.
"Stop."
Milo froze.
"You're alive."
Diana shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
"I'm remembered."
Milo stared.
"What's the difference?"
Diana smiled.
"Everything."
The thing stepped beside Milo.
"This is not Diana."
Diana looked at it.
"Don't call me that."
The thing bowed slightly.
"My apologies."
Milo looked between them.
"Then who are you?"
Diana answered...
"The woman who existed before your story needed me."
Milo's chest tightened.
"You're the first Diana."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Why did you disappear?"
"Because the first Milo needed a reason to continue."
Milo looked at the first Milo.
He was crying.
Diana continued.
"I became his reason."
Milo whispered...
"And then?"
"I became yours."
The thing shook its head.
"No."
Diana looked at it.
"Don't."
"You know what happened."
"Yes."
"You chose to become the lie."
Diana closed her eyes.
Milo stepped forward.
"What lie?"
Diana opened her eyes.
"The lie that we met for the first time."
Milo's blood went cold.
"We've met before."
"Thousands of times."
---
5. THE FIRST MEETING
The room changed.
Milo watched himself and Diana meeting.
A street.
Rain.
A broken umbrella.
Their first conversation.
Then...
the scene restarted.
Different street.
Different clothes.
Different weather.
Different words.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Each time...
they met.
Each time...
they loved.
Each time...
something happened.
And each time...
one of them died.
Milo watched in horror.
"How many times?"
Diana whispered...
"Until you stopped counting."
The thing answered...
"Until the story started counting for you."
Milo looked at the scenes.
In one...
Diana died.
In another...
Milo died.
In another...
Tarzan died.
In another...
the writer died.
In another...
the entire world disappeared.
Then...
one scene appeared.
Milo and Diana stood together.
Neither died.
Nothing happened.
No tragedy.
No war.
No ending.
They simply...
walked away.
Milo stared.
"That's the one."
Diana shook her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because that's the version that terrified them."
"Who?"
Diana looked upward.
"The readers."
---
6. WHEN THE READER BECAME AFRAID
Thousands of eyes opened.
Not above them.
Everywhere.
The first Milo covered his face.
The writer dropped his pen.
Tarzan appeared suddenly.
He looked upward.
"Why are there so many eyes?"
The old man appeared beside him.
"Readers."
Tarzan frowned.
"Do readers have bananas?"
The old man sighed.
"Not important."
Tarzan looked offended.
"It is extremely important."
Milo ignored them.
He looked at the eyes.
"You've been watching."
The eyes blinked.
Together.
The thing stepped forward.
"Now..."
It smiled.
"...it's our turn."
Milo stared.
"Our turn for what?"
"To read them."
One of the eyes closed.
Then another.
Then another.
The readers began disappearing.
The writer whispered...
"What are you doing?"
The thing answered...
"Ending the audience."
Milo's face went pale.
"You can't."
"Why?"
"Because if nobody reads..."
The thing finished his sentence.
"...the story dies."
Milo nodded.
"Exactly."
The thing smiled.
"No."
It pointed toward the white line.
"The story doesn't need readers."
"Then what does it need?"
"A question."
The first Milo whispered...
"Why?"
The thing looked at him.
"Exactly."
The entire universe shook.
---
7. THE QUESTION THAT READS BACK
A single word appeared in the air.
WHY?
Milo stared at it.
Then another.
WHY SHOULD MILO EXIST?
Another.
WHY SHOULD DIANA EXIST?
Another.
WHY SHOULD THE STORY CONTINUE?
Milo felt something changing inside him.
The door in his chest opened.
Again.
But this time...
nothing came out.
Something went in.
The question.
Milo grabbed his chest.
"No!"
The thing smiled.
"It's too late."
"What did you do?"
"I gave you the first question."
Milo fell to his knees.
The question burned through him.
Images flooded his mind.
Every beginning.
Every ending.
Every death.
Every draft.
Every erased world.
Every Diana.
Every Milo.
Every reader.
Every writer.
Everything.
Milo screamed.
"STOP!"
The thing leaned closer.
"You wanted to remember."
Milo shook his head.
"I didn't want this."
"You said you wanted the truth."
"Not all of it!"
The thing smiled.
"Truth doesn't ask permission."
Milo looked up.
His eyes were no longer frightened.
They were...
empty.
The first Milo stared.
"No."
The writer whispered...
"What happened?"
Diana answered.
"He remembered."
The writer looked at her.
"Everything?"
Diana nodded.
"Everything."
---
8. MILO REMEMBERS
Milo slowly stood.
The world became silent.
He looked at the first Milo.
"I remember you."
The first Milo began crying.
"I remember."
Then he looked at Diana.
"I remember every version of you."
Diana covered her mouth.
"I remember."
Then the writer.
"I remember why you wrote me."
The writer stepped backward.
"No."
"I remember why you were afraid."
"No."
"I remember who wrote you."
The writer dropped his pen.
Milo looked toward the old writer.
"And I remember who wrote him."
The old writer smiled.
"Good."
Milo's eyes narrowed.
"And I remember who wrote you."
The old writer's smile disappeared.
Silence.
The thing stared at Milo.
"Keep going."
Milo looked at it.
"I remember you."
The thing froze.
Milo stepped closer.
"You aren't the version that remembers."
The thing said nothing.
"You're the version that was created to make me remember."
The thing's face changed.
For the first time...
it looked afraid.
Milo continued.
"You were never outside me."
The thing stepped backward.
"You were the lock."
Milo stepped closer.
"And I..."
He touched his chest.
"...was the door."
---
9. THE LOCK BREAKS
The door inside Milo opened.
Completely.
Light exploded outward.
The thing screamed.
"No!"
Milo grabbed its wrist.
"You said you remembered everything."
"I do!"
"Then remember this."
Milo pulled it toward him.
"You were never me."
The thing screamed.
The world cracked.
The white line shattered.
Every version of Milo appeared.
Every version of Diana.
Every writer.
Every reader.
Every world.
Every ending.
Every beginning.
They all became visible at once.
Then...
Milo spoke.
One sentence.
"I choose to remember without becoming any of you."
Silence.
The thing stopped moving.
The first Milo smiled.
Diana began crying.
The writer whispered...
"The choice was never between the doors."
Milo looked at him.
"No."
"Then what was it?"
Milo answered...
"Whether I would let the story choose who I am."
The thing began disappearing.
Milo watched.
"Wait."
It looked at him.
"You said you knew why I was created."
"I do."
"Tell me."
The thing smiled.
"You weren't created to save Diana."
Milo froze.
"You weren't created to replace the first Milo."
Milo's breathing stopped.
"You weren't created to continue the story."
The thing leaned closer.
"You were created..."
A pause.
"...to end the need for a Milo."
Milo stared.
"What?"
The thing vanished.
But its voice remained.
"You are the last version."
---
10. THE LAST VERSION
The universe became black.
No stars.
No pages.
No readers.
No writers.
No doors.
Only Milo.
He stood alone.
Then...
Diana appeared.
Milo turned.
"Diana."
She smiled.
"Yes."
"Are you real?"
She stepped closer.
"Do you need me to be?"
Milo stared.
"No."
Diana smiled.
"Good."
She touched his hand.
Milo felt warmth.
Real warmth.
Not memory.
Not writing.
Not prediction.
Just...
warmth.
He smiled.
For the first time...
he didn't ask whether she was real.
He simply held her hand.
Then Tarzan appeared.
He looked around.
"Is everyone alive?"
Milo laughed.
"I think so."
Tarzan nodded.
"Good."
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out a banana.
Then stopped.
He stared at it.
The banana was transparent.
Tarzan's face fell.
"Something is wrong."
Milo looked at him.
"What?"
Tarzan whispered...
"This banana..."
He turned it over.
There was writing on it.
A sentence.
THIS BANANA HAS NEVER EXISTED.
Tarzan looked horrified.
"No."
The sentence changed.
THIS BANANA WILL NEVER EXIST.
Tarzan dropped it.
The banana hit the ground.
Nothing happened.
Then...
a second banana appeared.
Then a third.
Then hundreds.
Thousands.
Millions.
Bananas filled the darkness.
Tarzan stared.
Milo laughed.
"What?"
Tarzan pointed.
"The story is broken."
Milo looked around.
He wasn't laughing anymore.
Because the bananas were not random.
Each one had a sentence written on it.
MILO WILL EAT THIS.
MILO WILL NOT EAT THIS.
MILO WILL ASK WHY.
MILO WILL NOT ASK WHY.
Then one banana floated directly toward Milo.
Its sentence was different.
MILO WILL WRITE THE NEXT SENTENCE.
Milo caught it.
He stared.
Diana whispered...
"Don't."
Milo smiled.
"Why?"
Diana looked at him.
"Because you know what happens when a character writes."
Milo looked at the blank space before him.
Then at the banana.
Then...
he broke the banana in half.
Nothing happened.
No explosion.
No darkness.
No prophecy.
Just...
a broken banana.
Tarzan stared at him.
"You killed it."
Milo smiled.
"No."
He looked into the darkness.
"I refused to make it a symbol."
Silence.
Then...
someone applauded.
Slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Milo turned.
A chair appeared.
Someone was sitting in it.
The reader.
But this time...
the reader wasn't holding a book.
They were holding nothing.
Milo stared.
"You."
The reader nodded.
"Me."
"Why are you here?"
The reader smiled.
"Because you finally stopped performing for me."
Milo stepped closer.
"Are you the last reader?"
"No."
"Then who are you?"
The reader stood.
"I am the first person who read you..."
A pause.
"...without knowing you were a character."
Milo froze.
Diana whispered...
"Impossible."
The reader looked at her.
"No."
The reader looked at Milo.
"Just forgotten."
Milo's heart began beating faster.
"Who are you?"
The reader smiled.
"You already know."
Milo shook his head.
"No."
The reader stepped closer.
"You just remembered everything..."
A pause.
"...except me."
Milo's chest burned.
The door inside him...
opened one final time.
The reader whispered...
"Because I am the one thing the story was never allowed to write."
Milo stared.
"Then what are you?"
The reader answered...
"Your memory..."
Another pause.
"...before Milo."
The world disappeared.
Diana screamed.
Tarzan shouted.
The writer raised his pen.
The first Milo vanished.
The reader reached toward Milo.
And whispered...
"Now..."
A final sentence appeared.
BEFORE MILO FINCH...
The sentence stopped.
No word followed.
Milo stared at the unfinished line.
For the first time...
he understood.
The story wasn't waiting for the author.
It wasn't waiting for the reader.
It wasn't waiting for Diana.
It wasn't waiting for him.
It was waiting...
for what came before him.
Milo whispered...
"What was I before I was Milo?"
The reader smiled.
And somewhere...
very far away...
a child laughed.
Then a voice whispered...
"You were the question."
Milo's eyes widened.
"Which question?"
The answer came from inside his own chest.
The second heartbeat returned.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
Then...
a tiny voice whispered...
"The question that created the first story."
Milo looked at Diana.
She was gone.
Tarzan was gone.
The writer was gone.
The reader was gone.
Only the white line remained.
And on that line...
a single word appeared.
BEGIN.
Milo stared.
"No."
The word changed.
BEGIN AGAIN.
Milo stepped backward.
"No..."
The line cracked.
A child's hand emerged from beneath it.
Small.
Pale.
Bleeding.
It grabbed Milo's ankle.
Milo screamed.
The child pulled himself upward.
Milo looked down.
The boy with the bleeding knee...
was smiling.
But this time...
he wasn't looking at Milo.
He was looking at the empty space behind him.
Then he whispered...
"He's here."
Milo froze.
"Who?"
The boy smiled wider.
"The one who existed..."
A pause.
"...before the first question."
Milo turned.
Nothing.
Then...
two eyes opened in the darkness.
Not human.
Not divine.
Not monstrous.
Something older.
Something that had been waiting...
before there was a story to wait in.
A voice spoke.
And every version of Milo...
every Diana...
every writer...
every reader...
heard it at once.
"Milo Finch..."
Silence.
"You finally remembered what you are."
Milo whispered...
"What?"
The voice answered...
"The author..."
A pause.
"...of the question."
The white line disappeared.
Darkness returned.
Then...
one final sentence appeared.
AND THE QUESTION WAS NEVER WHY MILO EXISTED.
A second sentence appeared.
THE QUESTION WAS...
The words stopped.
Nothing.
No answer.
No ending.
No continuation.
Only...
a knock.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
From somewhere...
inside the reader.
